We loved the Shedd aquarium - particularly the beautiful sea horses and sea dragons, the amazing jelly fish display and the belluga whales!

“Fun for all ages”
Reviewed 19 July 2014 via mobile

I have been to the Aquarium in Atlanta which is 10,000 times better than the Shedd. Even so, for a trip to Chicago it is a great things to see with adults and children. It has a wide variety habitats, and the water show is exciting. The parking at $49 is pretty ridiculous and the entry fee is much more than the one in Atlanta, but near the quality.

“Family fun at the Shedd Aquarium”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

On Thursday, July 10, we did a family excursion to the aquarium. Along with four adults we had a 6 & 3 year old. Having gone to the website before we knew which option we wanted, but were unable to make that selection online. Upon arrival at around noon we waited in line about 20 minutes before making ticket purchases. There is definitely room for process improvement in the means of entry. Once inside we enjoyed the many exhibits - ocean, great lakes, rivers, Amazon, Caribbean reef, wild reef (some sharks), penguins (so cute), beluga whales, sea otter, stingray, and the gift shop. We hadn't realized until too late that special tickets were needed for the dolphin show.
Food can be purchased or brought along. Eating is only allowed in designated areas.
Getting to the aquarium was another added adventure. Instead of driving and then hoping to find parking we took the Metra train from the Elburn station into Ogilvie Center, then a cab ride over. The train was 7.25 per adult, one way, and the cab with tip for the six of us was 20. So much easier than trying to navigate the unfamiliar.
After a little over four hours at the aquarium the children were tired, but still very happy.

“Less than it was”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

Every time I go more and more of the attractions are not included in the basic price. Last time, the basic included a beautiful living reef exhibit. This time the reefs were part of the pricey $40/person fee for special exhibits of penguins, dolphins, whales and sting rays.

“Good aquarium, bad line management”
Reviewed 18 July 2014 via mobile

Went to Shedd Aquarium on Wednesday, July 16. From reading online, purchased tickets ahead of time and printed them. Upon arrival at 8:50 am (10 minutes before opening), there was about 25-30 people ahead of us. Since we already had our tickets, we assumed we would skip the line. However, in order to access the stingray touch and jellies, we had to wait in the same line in order to get a bracelet. Since it was early, we only had to wait 10 minutes or so, but when we left around 2 pm, the line was extremely long. That would've been very annoying.

Complaints about the lines aside, our two boys, ages 10 and 8, loved the aquarium. We saw everything except the aquatics show (skipped based on reviews here) and it took about 5 hours. We opted for the Sea Monsters 4-D movie and enjoyed it (about 15 minutes in length. The boys liked the stingray touch and the frog exhibit especially. The jellies was also a neat area. We watched the beluga whale talk and feeding and was worthwhile. Times were posted for these type of talks in the lobby. As adults, we also enjoyed the penguins and the wild reef.

As an FYI, we ran into a lot of summer day camp groups in the base ticket areas. Generally, they were well behaved but they did tend to take over any area they visited.

All in all a very good day. Just wish they had better line control.
