A perfect place for tourists to go when it is pouring rain. This library is the largest in the world. 9 floors total. We sat at a table in the public computer area to read newspapers. There were probably 85 computers for the area residents to use, who appear to stay there 9-5. One in particular, sitting very close to us was acting odd. This man was constantly making loud noises, and drinking liquor from a paper bag. The security guard would stroll by him, and the guy would hide the booze. Security spoke to this man several times, he should have been asked to leave.
Too bad this beautiful building is being used this way. I have worked in a library for 18 years and never have seen an issue like this.

Lovely public building - from the massive gargoyles outside to the simple but tasteful reading floors, cute escalator with curved round sides, up to the beautiful Winter Garden on 9th floor. This is a lovely building, of which Chicagoans should be proud.
Pleasant surprise was small but tastefully presented exhibit of street photographer Vivian Maier, including an interactive Polaroid allowing visitors to take their own self-portraits (not selfies!)

On a recent trip to Chicago, we were walking back from Buddy Guy's Legends and decided to stop in the library to see the Harold Washington exhibit. The building was impressive from the outside but the inside was even better. It was very clean and well organized. We went up the escalator so that we could visit each floor on our way up. Finally reaching the 9th floor, we were very impressed with the winter garden. What a lovely space in which to relax!! The exhibit on Harold Washington was very good. There was also a small civil war exhibit as well as photography by Vivian Maier. The staff in the exhibit rooms were very friendly and helpful. If you're in the area and just want to slow down and relax for a bit, take a look at this library. You won't be disappointed.

Impressive building on the outside - and even more impressive on the inside. The special exhibit on the 9th floor was a exhibit of the photographic art of Vivian Maier. GREAT display along with the Harold Washington exhibit. There were also lots of interesting displays among the different floors. The 9th floor also holds a breathtaking Winter Garden that is so inviting the I wished I had more time to stay and read for an hour or two!

After admiring the building from our hotel window we decided to take a look inside. Very nice and well maintained. On the top floor is a lovely space illuminated by skylights. There is a permanent exhibition about the former mayor for whom the building is named. When we visited there was also an interesting display of photos from the two World Fairs.
