If you are interested in Near Eastern art and archaeology this is a wonderful museum south of the city---but accessible by the Metra Electric. Really wonderful Egyptian, Mesopotamian objects with helpful captions. If you make the trip the Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House is nearby, so you could see both, for variety.

The Oriental Institute is really a great little museum of ancient civilizations. The University re-did it a few years ago and it is now educational, user-friendly, and free (w/ suggested donation). So much history and amazing artifacts packed into such a small space. Great to visit if you are checking out Hyde Park, or if you are at the Science and Industry Museum and want to see something that is a bit more adult and history oriented.

Love this hidden gem located on the University of Chicago campus. As a teacher of 6th Grade Ancient History, I first visited on a field trip. Their Mesopotamian Collection is one of the best in the country, as is their Egyptian collection. The museum is quite small and does not accommodate large groups; plan on spending about 2 hours When done, walk a few blocks over to Rockefeller Chapel.

I had to go in order to write a report for a class but by the end I didn't care because it was so much fun. There is much to see and do when learning in here. While it doesn't have many interactive exhibits like the Field Museum or children's museums; the plaques and staff were very informative.
