“Great Location, Staff and Amenities”
Reviewed 3 September 2013

Date of stay: 8/29/13 to 9/2/13

Hampton Inn & Suites has become our preferred hotel when traveling. We believe the combination of typical staff and amenities at a good price point is challenging to beat.

The downtown Chicago location is like more than a few of the area properties a bit dates. That said, overall the property is wearing well and isn’t really showing signs of frayed edges. The hotel is pretty, clean and staffed by a very friendly crew. We were “welcomed home” and had nothing but positive experiences in our interactions.

Our room was pleasant, if a bit noisy, overlooking the fire station 11 stories below. Hampton Inn is not known for their noise-cancelling windows; high end would insulate against the noise but will also drive up the nightly cost. Fortunately, the hotel offers excellent ear plugs! With ear plugs and on a comfortable mattress, we slept rather nicely and had no complaints.

Hampton Inn & Suites offers an excellent breakfast. It’s a deal and easily accounts for the cost of a night’s stay. There is hardly a reason to eat out. If we had any complain it is that during our Labor Day weekend stay the breakfast area was decidedly filled to capacity with only one of the available connected meeting rooms open to guests. Given the available space, it should have been opened to mitigate crowding.

We used the pool and spa, which was surprisingly crowd-free, given the vast number of families with children. The gym is well equipped. The adjoining patio presents a great place to relax in the sun or under an umbrella. There is also a well-equipped business center with four computers and a small store off the lobby.

The hotel no longer has an attached restaurant, which is under major renovation. That said, there are more than ample choices of local and chain restaurants within easy walking distance.

Public transportation is everywhere. The “L” is only one block north. There is a free shuttle to Navy Pier, which circulates the blocks near the hotel. Unless you must drive into and around the city, do not! We flew into Midway and handily used the L to get everywhere we wanted. Plan on perhaps 45 minutes at most to get to the airport.

Our experience with Hampton Inn & Suites suggests the smaller properties have more of a “boutique” feel than the large locations such as this. That said, this is a nice place we’d come back to again in the future.

Room Tip: Rooms on the west side flank the firehouse. Although noisy, the hotels does have earplugs available...

Overall the room furnishings felt 'tired'. The tile in the bathroom and wet bar area appeared to be stained with dirt and looked grubby. There were dents in the walls and the bathroom vanity had water damage in the back right corner. There was some kind of party on my floor on Saturday night that eventually required hotel security to threaten throwing people out - this was extremely loud and unpleasant. The cooling system worked...but just barely. It was cool enough to be tolerable, but never actually cooled down to be comfortable. I used my hhonor points for this reservation and I appreciated having a room in downtown Chicago for free. I would have been complaining all over the place if I had paid anything for it.

We just got back from a short, 2 day stay and can't say enough good things about the Hampton Inn & Suites. The entire staff (especially Matt) went out of their way to make us comfortable - always saying hello, opening doors, giving us tips about the city - it was a beautiful stay and we now have a new favorite hotel in Chicago. The hotel itself was very nice. The rooms were spacious and clean, and the full breakfast was wonderful. Also, the beds are the most comfortable hotel beds I've ever experienced. Good location, close to everything. My one wish? That it wasn't located directly across the street from Chicago Fire & Rescue, which was very busy this weekend. But it was a great stay and we can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Ask to be as far away from the Chicago Fire & Rescue as possible, and ask for their complimentar...

Great customer service.....great Hampton inn quality.....only complaint would be expense of valet parking....I think it increased since my last visit....$55/day - OUCH! Location to area attractions can't be beat. Visit used book store 1 block away. Pass by 7-11 and opt for downtown grocery store (Jewel Osco) for better bargain on snacks. Front desk staff, doormen as well as valet attendants are warm, friendly, helpful ALWAYS!

Room Tip: Best view is street view, but take advantage of ear plugs as neighboring fire truck may roll out at...

We just got back from a five day vacation in Chicago and we stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites. This was an excellent hotel, in very close proximity to everything that you may want to see, museums, Wrigley Field, Willis Tower, etc. Everything is either within a short walking distance, quick bus ride or a trip on the subway. There are also tons of restaurants right in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Lots of people talk about the noise factor with the fire station right across the street, but we didn't even take notice of it. We actually stopped at the firehouse coming back from dinner one night and the guys at the station were very friendly, talking with the kids and letting them sit in the fire trucks.

The hotel staff is extremely courteous and goes out of its way to make sure that you are having a pleasant stay. We couldn't say enough about them. This was our first trip to Chicago and we had a wonderful time. Wonderful city with very friendly people! We cant wait to come back and we would definitely stay at the Hampton again.

For the price, this was a great deal. The staff at the front desk was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The location is perfect which allowed us to walk to almost anywhere and very near a bus when needed. A cab showed up the minute we requested one. The room was clean and the shower was great. Breakfast served for several hours in the morning was of a variety that would meet the needs of anyone and was quite good.
I will stay here again and recommend it to others.

Good hotel and value for money in the middle of Chicago. Clean, good air conditioning and simple but tasty breakfast. As identified by other reviews, it's near the fire station, and despite being on the 12th floor, you can hear the fire truck sirens. Not a major problem ( and not the hotel's fault!) and will only affect you if you are a light sleeper. Any city centre hotel can have city noises.
Car parking at the hotel is 55 US dollars a night which is steep.
Would stay here again. Location is easy walk to all Chicago locations.
