“Beautiful Historic Lobby!!!”
Reviewed 10 September 2011

The lobby and common spaces in this hotel share a beautiful historic charm characteristic of the the epic "Chicago School" style of architecture. The rooms (at least my room) don't quite share same aesthetic at all. The room was quite nice but was uncomfortably mismatched with the historic character of the building. Instead it seemed to be stuck in the early 90's which, I believe, is when the hotel was renovated. Nevertheless, this place is in a great location; the rooms are comfortable if a tad small; and I loved their breakfast tea selection even if the remainder of the complimentary breakfast was a bit sparse. Unfortunately, the animal print robes were tattered and tacky - not at all fitting for a hotel in this price range.

I stayed one night on business. Friendly staff, from doorman to checkin to housekeeping. Warm, upscale, charming lobby. Interesting room doors (like office doors from the 30s, but the glass is completely opaque). Fair-sized rooms, larger than Hotel Monaco, but small, though adequate, bathroom. Comfortable bed, sheets, towels. Slight rattle to a/c. Nice TV, audio, phone, desk area/power. Restaurant in lobby is fun, good but a little limited menu, and slow service at breakfast. Convenient location (one block from state courthouse and maybe 2-3 blocks from federal courthouse). Easy access to Blue Line, one block away. I usually stay at Sofitel in Chicago, but the Burnham is now tied for first place in Chicago in my book.

My husband and our 7 and 4 year old children stayed at Burnham at the beginning of August. I’ll quickly review the strong and weak points as we have understood them:
Pluses:
- The building is an exquisite piece of architecture – a pioneer high rise with a mostly glass facade, rough iron staircase, marble stairs and probably original doors – partially with windows, the model used before for offices. In a city where the recent history of the architecture was written, we considered it a privilege to stay in such a hotel. We also had wonderful views to the Chicago theatre and to Macy’s, just to complete the historic feeling. It was a good opportunity to escape the ordinary hotels, all of a kind in style.
- the location was also perfect for stroller-pushing tourists like us. Two blocks from Millennium Park, just near the Art Museum, we either walked around or took the bus to the Science Museum and the Green Line to Oak Park, both having stations in the immediate vicinity
- good quality free wifi internet in the rooms
- good quality toiletry items

We could mention the following small annoyances:

- the plumbing system probably needs to be upgraded and modernized. The water pressure was too high, with no possibility to make it more moderate and the sewage went to slowly for such water volume, so there was a constant pressure to monitor the water level in the bath tub.
- on our arrival day our 7 year son discovered a pair of socks in the cupboard and quickly put them on, disregarding the fact that they had a price label mentioning that any removal of the tag would imply a charge of 15 usd to our account. We had to pay for them and take them home (we did not mention the incident to the hotel, just paid the bill) but we found the whole approach a bit unfair and commercially aggressive.

On the services side, things went smoothly, with no incidents or extraordinary things to mention – good or bad. Everybody was professional, nice and normal.
The cafe downstairs serves breakfast and had nice atmosphere but we found it to be of a rather small variety of choices and in a week we had to change the place/ restaurant several time for more balance.

This is one of the few hotels in Chicago that allow animals. We have a 45 pound lab mix we were bring with us on vacation. The Grant Park is the closest park and its about 5-6 blocks away from the hotel. It was a pretty far walk to take our dog out. The room was very nice the view was great, the bed was a little stiff and the shower drained slow those are the only complaints. The valet guys were nice & the staff was very friendly. They greeted us every time we came in. The hotel is very quiet didn't hear any noise at night which was great. The history on the hotel was awesome to read. Great price for a hotel right in downtown Chicago. It was close to most things, we walked to the skydeck, michigan ave ect. We took a taxi to Navy Pier and it ran about $12 not including tip. The old navy is right across the street from the hotel also the disney store, dunkin donuts, subway ect. Will be staying here next time we come to visit. Very impressed!

From the initial greeting at the door to final checkout, the staff could not have been more attentive. The location is very near the Art Museum, the reason for our visit. The room was spotless and quiet at night. Could not find fault with this property.

I stayed at this hotel based upon location and proximety to where my daughter was staying in Chicago. I couldn't be more pleased. The rooms (stayed twice in one month! were very quiet, comfortable and well furnished. The views are amazing and it is located just two blocks from Millennium and Grant Park. The restaurant has fanastic service and good food, the prices are reasonable also. The hotel is in a refurbished building with great details. I can't wait to come back and stay here again! I joined the Kimpton Loyalty program (free) and I was upgraded to a upper floor in the hotel, and received other benefits.

Room Tip: The upper floors have more of the original details of this building preserved.

This is a good hotel with great service in a good location. The rooms are small but not intolerable. The hotel is clean and the beds are comfortable. The bathrooms are small and lack some modern must haves such as a curved shower curtain rod. The restaurant on site is good and fairly priced. I would stay here again based on the price. Anything over $175 is too expensive for this hotel. It is purely a value stay for a day or two.
