If you have stayed at a Kimpton Hotel then you start to know what to expect. Having stayed at another Kimpton Hotel since then, I now realise how special this one was. The location is fantastic, walking outside the hotel you are confronted with amazing buildings, it is just off the Magnificent Mile and there are lots of great bars and restaurants and bars right near by.

We booked a King Deluxe room. The room itself was a little smaller than I've experienced with regards to American hotels but by no means tiny and very nicely decorated, clean and comfortable with an enormous, super-comfortable bed. One thing I must add though, is that before I booked this hotel, I had read about these wonderful window seat/meditation stations in the rooms - unfortunately our room did not have this luxury. Having booked through an agent with a Kimpton Hotel before and again, been given the smallest room on the floor both times (evident from looking at the fire escape layout), I am of the impression that the hotel favours guests who book direct through them for the best rooms.

The added bonus of robes, the complimentary daily wine hour (with nibbles), free internet access and morning complimentary Starbucks coffee all gave this hotel a great welcoming and homely feel. The maid even left us a soft drink on occassion which was a nice little touch. The adjoining bar was great and did a 'TV dinner' special at a set time each day which was great value. The funky music in the lifts also added a touch of fun to the hotel. The lobby was very plush and a great place to sit and relax with a glass of wine after a hard day's shopping. The fitness suite was also great, kitted out with personal TV's on the machines and all the usual necessities.

Overall, although my first choice for Chicago would be the Omni, I would still definitely stay at this hotel again and would certainly recommend it to anyone due to its fantastic location, great staff and comfortable rooms, and of course, the daily free wine hour!

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the Monaco with my husband over the Valentine's weekend. We decided on the Mediterranean Suite and boy were we surprised. The room is HUGE! I researched this trip and after reading reviews from others we chose the Monaco. We often are disappointed when looking at pictures online and arrive to a hotel to find it nothing like what the pictures show. Not this time. We were looking for a jacuzzi suite (not exactly easy to find in downtown Chicago). The jacuzzi is a two person and it is a really deep jacuzzi. It was very relaxing after a long day of walking around the streets of Chicago.

We did not have a "river view" but found the view to be fine. We could see the river. At our next stay we will request a higher floor (we were on the 11th) as I imagine the view might have been a little better. I will also request the other side of the hotel - room numbers in the 20s to be away from the El. It was kind of loud but not enough to keep us awake. Our room was quiet. We were not across from the elevator and even though when in the hallway we could easily hear people, our suite setting protected us from hallway noise as the bedroom area is tucked back away from the hallway.

The location is great. Just a block from the Mag Mile and a block from the theater district. You can easily walk to all major attractions or if needed, a short taxi ride.

A few downsides. Even though this suite is HUGE, they put the toilet in the same room as the shower and jacuzzi. I found this odd considering the amount of room there was available. It would have been nice to have had a private toilet room. Also, the tiles around the jacuzzi needed a little TLC, nothing major just a few that were cracked.

The bed was very comfortable and the linens were nice but the sheets were really rough and scratchy. Both my husband and I noticed this. The robes also were heavy and plush but also scratchy.

I would definitely stay here again. Join Kimpton so they give you the option to upgrade your room at arrival. They were booked solid both nights we were there so the option wasn't available to us. They also give you a small credit towards the mini bar. We did bring some of our own bottled water and drinks as there is a small refrigerator.

We liked the Starbucks in the morning but ending at 9am is a little too early, especially on the weekend. But if you ask, they'll give you a coffee pot for your room. There is also a wine reception from 5-6. We weren't around at this time so didn't partake but our friends did and said it was nice.

One more tip - park at the Millennium Garage. This was a suggestion made by another person here on TA. It was only a few blocks away and half the cost of the valet parking (which for this hotel is NOT on site parking but at a garage down the block, by the way). I found it interesting that it was faster for us to get on our way using this option than for some who used the valet. I waited in the lobby while my husband walked a few short blocks to get our car. Several people checking out at the same time as us were still waiting for their cars when we pulled away.

we've been staying at hotel monaco in early september 2009 for eight nights. the staff is fantastic: super friendly, funny and helpful and always greet you with a smile (this includes housekeeping as well).

hotel's location is simply great, right next to chicago river, few steps away from mag mile and state street which gives you some extraordinary views from the rooms. we had a room on 9th floor overlooking marina city, chicago river, willis tower, trump tower and much more...

the best (!) feature, as mentioned before, are the huge sills you can sit and lay on. perfect to chill and relax. our room was nicely renovated (we loved the wallpaper and the mirror) and the mini bars feature several items for every traveler's situation.

we didn't feel anonymous at all (especially compared to big chain hotels) because you always had the feeling of being pampered with genuine friendliness.

go somewhere else if you're looking for sniffy stuck-up personnel, extremely luxurious marble-stuff and a big choice of bars and restaurants. book monaco if you want the perfect location for discovering the heart of downtown chicago.

My husband and I just spent a weekend in Chicago and stayed at the Hotel Monaco. The location is at the north edge of the loop and the south edge of the miracle mile shopping district which affords great access to both the theater district, museums and shopping. The colorful decor is fun, and our king room featured a window seat big enough to nap in. The linen was top of the line and the heating and cooling responsive and precise. The hotel puts on a nightly wine reception, free to guests ,which is a great transition from day to evening. Our concierge booked reservations for our dinners both nights which really removed our stress. The adjacent restaurant was great for both lunch and breakfast and not over-priced/under quality as many hotel restaurants can be. The best part of the stay was how friendly and helpful all the staff was. We booked a great rate and still got top level service.

My husband and I spent a long weekend in Chicago. The front desk was very helpful and cheerfully recommended a restaurant and made the reservation for us. The room, although small, was fun and festive and QUIET. The location is fantastic and we really enjoyed our weekend. We did not go to the happy hour in the lobby on Friday afternoon, but the other travellers look like they were having a great time. We will be back for a couples weekend and also would consider bringing the kids there too.

We booked this because it was the only hotel in Chicago that would guarantee me adjoining rooms so that I could bring my daughter and three friends to Chicago to celebrate her 16th birthday. We had an spacious two room suite with high ceilings, a huge jacuzzi, incredibly comfortable furniture, lighting, a great desk, beautiful furnishings including wallpaper and rugs. The suite had three window seats where the kids got to look out at the Chicago skyline. The adjoining room with two doubles was also very comfortable. The manager brought my daughter four gourmet cupcakes to celebrate her birthday with her friends. They also ran up and down bringing these teenagers another bed, several toothbrushes, more toiletries. The rooms were more than reasonably priced. This is one block from the river and Michigan Avenue, so it's a great location. The only down side of this place is that you hear the El in the morning and that Wabash isn't the greatest street in town.
