“Wedding Get together”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

We were here for a family wedding. There were many of us staying at the hotel. It would have been really nice if they could have put us all on the same floor. We all had made reservations 4-5 months in advance and had an average stay of 3 nights. Other than that, it was a beautiful hotel and a very nice stay.

VERY original hotel. This is not a cookie-cutter at all! Service was fine, decor was something! Avoid transients outside at all costs. Adjoining room I inadvertently booked must have had a bachelor party going on, but front desk made other arrangements without any issue.

Room Tip: Avoid adjoining rooms, if possible.

I stayed here about 6-8 times a year before finding a way to move to Chicago. The service and quality are impeccable. The hotel is conveniently located to sights and transportation. They are great about correcting any issues. I highly recommend it! They even have a secret swimming pool that our young family friends enjoyed.

We opted for an executive level room and it was well worth it. Speedy check-in, private elevator, great breakfast right on our floor, two bathrooms in the room, cocktails and snacks in evening made our stay very comfortable. Big fans of the comfy bedding and the dual shower heads in the bathrooms. Would love to have one at home! We enjoyed being within walking distance to Millennium Park and Grant Park. The concierge was very helpful in suggesting tours, which started and ended at one of the hotel's entrances. there was one downside for us. Considering how opulent the lobby area is, the restaurant where we had lunch was a disappointment. The atmosphere, decor and food reminded us of an airport eatery. There are so many good restaurants in the area, it would be better to have meals elsewhere.

Room Tip: Opt for an executive level room

Recent business took me to Chicago where I stayed at the Palmer House. This is a grand hotel with beautiful Art Deco lobby. The ceiling is remarkable and is worth a drink in the lobby bar to admire the architecture. My room was relatively small by today's standards, but it was still very comfortable and nicely appointed. I had a inside courtyard room so I did not have any street noise, which made for a great sleeping night.

Room Tip: If you want quiet, ask for an inside courtyard room.

This is an excellent and affordable hotel to stay in while in downtown Chicago. Very close to downtown shopping, restaurants, and millennium park. The historical feel of the hotel gives it a unique charm that has a truly chicago feel to it.

The Palmer House is right in the loop, next to the Art Institute and the Chicago Symphony. It spans the block between State and Wabash off Monroe, just a block in either direction from the CTA train. It's perfectly situated, with great restaurants just outside any of the three exits.
The rooms are comfortable but compact. Where I was, you couldn't get into the bathroom without knocking into the door, and likewise the closet door could block the bathroom. In the bathroom, the toilet paper was set behind one's right shoulder, which is awkward--or impossible, if they have a "P" sticker on the roll, so you can't start the roll and catch it.
But the room was clean and comfortable, and the staff unfailingly pleasant and responsive. One thing to beware: they put a $50 per day deposit when you arrive, to cover, God knows--there's no mini-bar or refrigerator (or coffee maker) in the room. I guess they want to guard against rock stars trashing the room. No one told me about this when I arrived, but AmEx alerted me that the bill was substantially higher than I'd expected. They take it off at check-out, but they really should warn you in advance.
