“Great hotel, great location, service to match”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

Stayed only one night in this hotel. Concierge (Tracey) was very helpful, front desk staff did a good job and room was nice. This location is very close to Grant Park and Millennium park which you will want to see when you are there. Only minor irritant is having to wait for the elevators as they only service select floors. Would recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed at the Palmer House for my husband's son's wedding, July 10-13, 2014. My step-son had told us twice that, when we checked in, we were supposed to be upgraded to a suite, since my husband was the father of the groom. The registration clerk told us there was no such notation on our reservation and that there were no suites available anyway. So, we ended up in a king bed room which was adequate for us, but for $250 a night, it was not very big. The major problem we had was the bathroom. It was so small, my husband and I could not fit in it at the same time! Plus, the door would not stay open, hitting me in the back as I was trying to get ready for the wedding events all weekend. We had the buffet breakfast, on the first morning, at the restaurant there in the hotel. The service was terrible and the price was way too much for what we got. We did the self-park parking, for $42 a night, but not for all three nights we stayed at the hotel. One night, my step-son borrowed our car to run errands and parked it at his place overnight. As I was reviewing our receipt, after my husband checked us out on the 13th, there were charges for 3 nights in the self-park garage when we only parked in the garage for 2 nights. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this extra charge until we were well on the road home. I am calling the hotel today to get the extra $42 charge off our credit card. On the plus side, we had a wonderful bell hop, Kenneth, who helped us with our luggage as we checked out on the 13th. He was absolutely charming and has been with the hotel for 19 years! We really appreciate all of Kenneth's help and hope the hotel will recognize him for his good deeds! Overall, we will never stay at the Palmer House again. Mostly because we will have no reason to do so, but also because of the price for the small, old rooms. BTW, most of the wedding party was upgraded to suites as they checked in.

Room Tip: Our room, #18-255, was right by the elevated train track and it was a little noisey as the trains we...

Stayed here for a conference, so the cost was covered by my employer. The building is historic and gorgeous inside. The rooms have been updated and the linens are superb. The location is safe and there's plenty to see and do within walking distance. Would stay again. Would suggest making use of the subway system to get to local attractions as taxi's can be costly (didn't figure that out until a couple days into the trip). Would highly recommend the Corner Bakery, great service and tasty food just next door. Ate here daily for breakfast. Also, the fitness room is free and has awesome equipment and plenty of room.

Room Tip: Ask if there are larger beds available. We upgraded to a queen size for no additional charge. Stay...

We have now stayed there twice, the first time 15 years ago. Because my meeting was again located at the Palmer House we stayed here. It has been upgraded since 1999, but the rooms are still very average to small sized and the bathrooms were the smallest I recall having seen in an upscale US hotel. The service was generally very helpful. But, as someone previously commented there were the minimum number of towels, glasses etc. each day.
Of course the lobby, lobby bar, and large meeting rooms were beautiful. However, there are a lot better options in Chicago for nice rooms in the same price range. Because I am a Hilton Gold member we will likely stay in a Hilton property next time in Chicago, just not this particular hotel.

Room Tip: Don't necessarily accept the first room they assign to you.

Convenient to everything in the loop. Walking distance to Chicago Art Museum. Hotel is a classic gem. Lobby is spacious and beautiful, didn't want to leave my comfortable seat people watching. Check in at the honors desk was quick ad painless. Small rooms are small, perfect for one person; go for a larger type. My room was larger, flat screen tv, free wifi as honors guest, no coffee maker. Concierge was very helpful with making plans in town, and gave great advice on tours. Disappointed with concierge level. No receptionist, so a key is necessary to access the elevator arriving and leaving the floor. Bottle water is available, if you know to ask. Food service was just OK, Hilton has scaled back their offerings, not only here, but system wide.

Room Tip: Concierge level is not really worth it.

If given the opportunity to enjoy afternoon tea in a historic property the answer is always yes! The setting is the beautiful lobby of The Palmer House Hotel and the price for the experience is $40. I feel it is worth the price, but will add the selection of tea and the presentation left me wanting. My comparison references are the tea experience at The Drake Hotel and Palm Court at The Plaza.

First off, the hotel was wonderful. The room was amazing and so is the location. You are right by the trains so you don't have to walk far. However, our experience with customer service was sub-par at best. The front desk was barely any help and seemed bothered when we asked a question about the room or parking. It was a huge shock to my husband and I when we found out they were charging us nearly as much for parking in their garage for a week as we were paying for the room. The hotel does their parking through a separate company, so they pay the garage and then add their own fees on top of it. It will save you about $25 in parking per day to pay the garage directly. Be sure to take the receipt back to the front desk to prove you paid though or else they will charge you twice. And they aren't very helpful trying to fix that either. It was a wonderful hotel, a great experience, but they need to work on their people skills.
