“Only if desperate.”

We paid what I would consider a small fortune for this room ($290.96 for one night). At that rate, I expected a very nice room. We reserved a standard room, King bed. The bed was possibly queen size. There must not be any soundproofing in the walls of this room. We were awake most of the night with the noise from the room next door (they were not partying, just regular talking), in the hall and from outside. The only good thing about our one night stay was that it was a nice view of Grant Park, however, not worth $290.96. I would not consider staying here again unless it's the only available room left in Chicago.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

My husband and I stayed at the Best Western Grant Park from July 8th to the 12th, and we were very happy with our accommodations.

In reading some of the reviews prior to booking, it’s very apparent that many people go to a less expensive hotel and expect 5 star all the way. This is unrealistic. If you are looking for 5 star, perfect location and quality everything, you’ll need to spend twice as much and go elsewhere. For those of you that are on a budget, and want a good, clean, convenient place to stay, this is the hotel for you.

All of the staff were amazingly friendly, fun and accommodating, except for the two girls that checked us in. Once the staff turned over, everyone was really great, but when we originally checked in we were greeted by employees that seemed like they didn’t want to be there, and had an attitude before we even gave our names. Next, we were disappointed to find that the King size bed room we had booked was not available, and they only had a Queen with no compensation for the downgrade. This would have been a small concession for us, but this could have been handled so much better by these two girls who obviously need some customer service training. We asked if the room had a fridge and were told no, so we hauled our cooler up to the room, only to discover that the room not only had a fridge, but it also had a microwave. The girls obviously don’t know anything about the rooms they are assigning. If we had been told that our King room wasn’t available, but we were being given a Queen with a great view, a fridge and a microwave, we would have been more than happy. These girls, however, really didn’t care if we were happy or not. Thank goodness for the turnover in staff, as everyone else was fantastic.

Room:
We were assigned room 501. It’s a corner room with windows on both sides, providing an amazing view of Grant Park, the lake, and a beautiful building. We loved the fact that the bedspread was white, as you could tell it was cleaned between guests, and you could sit on the bed without wondering what you might be sitting on ;). The bed was very comfortable with soft quality sheets, but the 4 pillows provided were extremely flat. I’m sure they would have provided additional pillows on request, but we didn’t bother asking. In addition to the fridge and microwave, which worked well (although I don’t think all the rooms have them), the room had a table and chairs, a flat screen tv, coffee maker and a safe. The bathroom did not have a tub, but it had a large shower. The toilet wasn’t working the best, but handled the job well enough that we didn’t say anything for the first two days. Unfortunately, it backed up enough that we had to eventually call maintenance. They were there in a few minutes, and fixed the toilet enough that we could make due for another day, but then had the same issue. This time, they agreed to leave us a plunger, just in case…. I’m glad they did,,,,,,  Everything else in the room, including the AC, worked well, although we did loose power in the room the morning we were leaving. (I’m sure it was just a fuse or something.) House keeping did a good job, and we had no complaints. If used, they replace the coffee packages daily (one regular and one decaf), but we’d grab a couple extra off the cart in the hall in the mornings, so we could enjoy both a morning and afternoon coffee.

This is an older hotel, and not well insulated, so we did hear a lot of street noise, but nothing that kept us awake. We had an adjoining room next to us and you could hear everything in the next room. This is really only an issue if your neighbours are less than courteous. Unfortunately, we weren’t blessed with good neighbours, but we were able to suck it up.

Room tip: Since some of the TA reviews indicated that there weren’t enough plugs by the bed, we brought a multiply plug extension cord from home, so that we could plug our phones in by the bed at night.

Pool:
The pool is on a roof top extended from the third floor. It was clean, but cold, so we didn’t go in. We did make use of their chairs around the pool so that we could get a little sun while on vacation. They don’t have loungers, so we spread out our beach towels from home when we wanted to lie flat.

Gym:
The gym is clean and has a lot of machines, but I don’t think they get used often, or that they are maintained, as they looked better than they worked.

Parking:
Valet parking, with in and out privileges, is available for $38 a day. To save a few dollars, we parked a couple of blocks away in a public parking lot for $20/24 hrs. It was a very convenient and cheaper option.

Surrounding places:
There are two grocery stores (one with alcohol), a Starbucks, and many restaurants within a few blocks, which made it very convenient.

Proximity to Tourist Attractions:
Grant Park is directly across the street, and it’s a close walk to many tourist attractions like the Aquarium, Solder’s Field, etc.

Millennium Park is about a kilometre away, but it’s still walkable and you get to see Buckingham Fountain and the big bean sculpture.

The Magnificent Mile is about 5 to 6 kilometres away. We walked to it (and beyond), but you can take the Number 3 bus (directly in front of the hotel) for $2.25/person.

Navy Pier is too far to walk, but if you take bus Number 29 (a block and a half away from the hotel), it takes you directly there. The hotel staff was more than happy to give us directions.

We also walked to the Willis Tower and Little Italy (nothing to see in Little Italy). We are walkers so it wasn’t a problem for us, but it may be a little far for some.

Wrigley Field and Lincoln Zoo /Park were too far to walk to. We drove, but public transit would have been an option as well.

Summary:
We had a few issues here and there, but nothing unreasonable; we knew we hadn’t booked the Hilton. We were more than happy with the hotel and all the conveniences. It was clean, functional and in a safe neighbourhood. Most of the staff was fantastic and we even made a friend who took us out for a game of pool after his shift. We’d definitely stay here again, and recommend this hotel to friends.

Room Tip: 501 was a corner room with an excellent view, a microwave and fridge.

We have stayed here because it was part of the tour package that we are doing with ATI....If you are making your plans for visiting Chicago do not include this hotel, it is very outdated, we asked for connecting rooms as we are travelling with the mother in law but it did not happen, no coin operated laundry service and there laundry service is hugely overpriced. Our rooms look like they have not had any maintaince done on them for the last 10 years.

I have stayed at this hotel for the past 3 years when I have attended The Taste of Chicago. The location on S. Michigan & 11th street is great for the Taste. You are also very close to the Museum campus and the water taxi's to the Navy Pier. You also have close access to the Orange & Red lines on the CTA on Roosevelt Ave. right around the corner with one tranfer from the Red line to the Blue line which takes you right to O'Hare

First trip to Chicago with the family. Hotel is wayyyyy overpriced for what you get. The hotel is very, very outdated. The room we had was the smallest hotel room I had ever stayed in and I've stayed in quite a few. On the bright side, the room was fairly clean and the beds were average. The location is pretty good in that a lot of things are within walking distance. Parking was a pain, but again we were in Chicago. Front desk staff was somewhat friendly but not real helpful when answering our questions about where we should park. No complimentary breakfast. For the rates we paid, they should have fed us the whole time. If you're looking only for a place to sleep, this place is probably not a bad choice.

The rooms were average. The hotel is dated. The brochure said breakfast included but it was not. We had to eat breakfast elsewhere. The pool was only half full. It was a place to sleep. The staff was friendly and helpful.

After booking a night at the Best Western Grant Park on the AAA app, I was really excited that the hotel offered free parking. There were comparably priced hotels with higher ratings in the area, but none offered the luxury of free parking like the Best Western Grant Park. I'd figure it'd save me $40 easily.

Upon check-in, I got my room keys, then asked how the whole "free parking" thing worked. The clerk gave me a confused look, "We don't have free parking. In fact, parking is first come first serve, and we're full for the night. You're going to have to park around the corner at the public lot." Okay, I said, but my parking would be covered, right? After all, the hotel did promise free parking (see included picture). He replied that it probably wouldn't be, so I left a note for the manager. I was assured that Octavio, the manager, would be "around all morning tomorrow" and that I could "definitely speak with him."

Next morning, Octavio was nowhere to be found, and I kept getting different excuses for his absence. "He's on the property but busy at the moment." "He's off the property and won't be back until later." "He on his way back to the property but might have to head right back out." One of the front desk clerks, Tiara, even pretended to call Octavio, but I could hear from her conversation that she was on the phone with somebody else (who was not named Octavio). It's never a good feeling to get the run around from a hotel's staff when you're trying to resolve an issue.

I began discussing the "free parking" problem with Tiara, who proved to be both belligerent and dismissive. First she blamed the parking garage (the one where I ultimately parked my car) -- "You need to go ask them for a refund." Huh? I quickly pointed out that they have zero affiliation with Best Western, so how could this free parking problem possibly be their fault? Then she blamed me: "If something says free parking, it's your job to call and confirm it." Why? Both the app and the emailed receipt said free parking. Finally, she blamed AAA. She said Best Western doesn't have any control of that site's content, and I need to take it up with them. After over an hour of this (and also waiting for Octavio who never showed), I gave up with no resolution.

Thankfully, AAA has since rectified the situation. They took full responsibility (even though the error was shared between them and Best Western) and reimbursed me for parking. Class acts, those folks at AAA... very different from the staff at the Best Western Grant Park, who are more inclined to shift the blame and tell the customers that they are wrong.

One redeeming factor: the location of the hotel at the southern tip of Grant Park is excellent. You have quick access to so much cool stuff in Chicago, even if it unfortunately means you'll be spending the night at a disorganized and unfriendly hotel that definitely does not have free parking.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a floor with both vending and ice.
