“Very good hostel.”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

I stayed at this hostel for 2 nights and I can say I had a really good time. The facilities are huge, the breakfast was basic but free. What I liked the most were the bedrooms which are spacious, have good comforters, and felt like a nice placed to rest.
What I did not like much, was the poor wife signal, I could never browse the web from my room, so I had to go downstairs (first floor) all the time.
Although the hostel is enormous, nice and well located, I think there are other cheaper and better options in town.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask if the wifi signal is working everywhere at the hostel.

I stayed at the Hostelling International-Chicago hotel while I was visiting for a Solar Power conference at McCormick Place. The stay was close enough to the convention center to be fairly convenient, and the price was fantastic. I stayed in a semi-private room, and the room cost was about 1/3 of what normal hotels nearby were booking at. The semi-private room has a private bedroom with two kitchens and two bathrooms (one male/one female) shared by 8 bedrooms.
The beds were very comfortable, the shower, sink and toilet areas newly remodeled, and the sitting areas were nice.
On the second floor, there is a common area with nice hostel-type amenities: ping pong tables, board games, tourist info desk. WHile I was there, there was a great crowd of French high school students, several Germans, and others from afar. It was really nice to be able to commiserate.
A light breakfast is offered each morning--strong coffee.
All in all a great stay.

Clean large rooms, with ensuite bathrooms and kitchenette. Free breakfast. A volunteer operated tourism desk. 24 hour front desk service available. Perfect location downtown. This hostel is just perfect for the single traveller. There are even sign up activities for people looking to see things with others. I sgned up for an evening outing with 15 other people to Kensington Mines, a famous blues bar. As a single woman, I probably would have been uncomfortable going to a blues bar at 9 pm by myself, but in a group of 15, I felt quite secure and was able just to enjoy myself. Great way to meet other fellow travellers from around the world.

Room Tip: I chose a dorm room with only 4 beds. Very quite and clean with a sitting area.

Really, I regret having elected this hostel for my holidays in Chicago. Even its location is perfect and the facilities (not the rooms) are quite big, the bathrooms were extremely dirty. I have spent there 8 nights, and during most of the days the shared bathroom had blood spots in the toilet and in the floor (same spots, no new ones), rests of pubic hairs (someone decided that it was a good idea to shave the pubis in the toilet), the shower had snots in the wall (that's another question: why people do such disgusting things?) and the soap dispenser was not fixed after it was broken the second day of my stay.

The other fact was the room temperature. With outside temperatures close to 32ºF, there was cold air in the room. We asked for a bit more hot: the first day was ok but the second day, it was cold again. When we speak with the people in reception, they told us that they could not do anything because the temperature control was not in our room, it was in other room (each suite is composed by a bathroom and 4 bedrooms). Even, the way they told us make us feel like idiots.

So, not really recommendable. I feel really sorry for having chosen this hostel.

Room Tip: The CTA is at about 30 feet from the hostal, so you can hear it from the bedroom.

I'd never been to Chicago before and my wife and I were there for the Chicago Marathon. The start and finish of the marathon is only a couple blocks from the hostel! Great! The hostel was right downtown and easy to find. The staff was courteous and helpful. The beds and rooms were a bit more expensive than other hostels I stayed at but it was worth it. They provided a pre-race pasta dinner and breakfast (with bagels) the morning of the race. The place was full of runners from all over the world. The beds were comfortable enough and I (who rarely sleeps well before a race) slept like a log. It was a bit noisy if you get a room on the east side of the building (because of the elevated trains) but bring ear plugs and you'll sleep fine.
We'll go back there next time.

Room Tip: Try not to get a room on the east side of the building because it's noisy with the elevated trai...

I am travelling since 11 month and I have really never seen a hostel like this.
Let's say ... it does not seem just a "hostel" but it seems a big, hughe hotel with a big entrance, receiption chip cards to enter the elevator and rooms. Very high tec and very nice.
The breakfast is very good: different kinds of home backed muffins, cornflakes, milk, fruit juice, bread... all but not a tipical hostel. It is really ECELLENT!!! :)
