“Stylish hotel in a great location”
Reviewed 20 February 2012

We stayed three nights at the Affinia and had a wonderful time. We walked to Loyola University Museum of Art (Heaven + Hell exhibition runs 2/10 through 6/30/12), Water Tower Place for shopping and to Navy Pier (Smith Museum of Stained Glass has over 150 pieces and it's free). The hotel is understated contemporary decor; if you like overstuffed or fussy, the Affinia is not for you. Aside from the two women working the front desk when we checked out everyone was very friendly and helpful. The web site said hotel guests would get two-for-one admission (which we did), reserved seating and a complimentary cocktail (which we did not) at the Underground Bar (which has moved to Clark St). Gino's East is right next door and the front desk staff will give you a pass that lets you go to the front of the line and get free bread sticks or a salad. With the hospital across the street it can get loud from the ambulances blowing their horns at cars that won't move; at night, when there's less traffic, it's not a problem. Also, the window has a quilted roll-down shade that helps muffle the noise. We had brunch at C-House from a very interesting menu that we really enjoyed. Our room was very clean and the toiletries were by Philosophy. We would definitely stay here again.

Dear dramaqun, Thanks for taking the time to share about your experience. I'm pleased to hear you appreciated our location, cleanliness & C-House Restaurant. It sounds like you were able to get out and enjoy a ton in this great city. Good tips about our partner perks like Underground Wonderbar & the Gino's East passes to cut the line! Thanks again and we look forward to welcoming you back, Stephen Blackford, GM

Thanks Affinia Chicago for a fabulous weekend! We stayed at the Affinia for 3 nights for a "girls' getaway" with my mom, daughter and friends. The hotel staff is absolutely wonderful and were quick to accomodate our every request. The hotel is very convenient to shopping on Michigan Ave, great restaurants and tourist sites such as the John Hancock Observatory. We even walked to Navy Pier. We ate at the C-House twice for breakfast and were very pleased. Service was great and so was the food. The front desk staff and bellmen are very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be staying there again. Oh...and thanks for the Gino's "golden" ticket!

This is our second time staying at the Affinia Chicago, and just like last time, FRIENDLY STAFF, BEAUTIFUL ROOM, EXCELLENT PRICE AND THE RESTAURANT IS THE SAME ! I can go on and on about the hotel luxurious guest rooms, but this time I'd like to address the staff again. Joelle who works at the front doors was among my favourites, he actually remembered us from when we visited in JUNE !!! He must see a thousand people a day ! He wold say things like " do you need a cab mister Rocky ?" or " Hello Miss Genny, how was your day" when we would return to the hotel. Andre at the front desk is again, a favourite of mine, he recommended the wings at Timothy O'Tooles last visit and was again as friendly this visit, he even went to the back to get us an umbrella before we went out one rainy evening ! There was another gentleman working the front door this time and I failed to get his name , but he was also SO friendly, high fiving us and getting really excited when we returned from the Bulls game. It is unheard of, in my opinion, for employees of a hotel to be SO personable !! Annie was also at the hotel again this time, working nights, so we got to see her both night, same sweet and friendly Annie !! I hope I'm not forgetting anyone, but incase I have, you should know that even the staff we encountered on the elevators would ask us how we were, how we were enjoying Chicago and even recommend places we should go ! OH !! A waitress in the C House Restaurant at the hotel was the same, she went out of her way to google maps for us, write us directions , and recommend places around the city ! We will ABSOLUTELY be staying at the AFFINIA every time we return to Chicago !!! Thanks again for a wonderful, memorable visit !!!

Room Tip: Haven't had a bad room yet !! We were right beside the elevator both times, rooms 1001 and 1801...

This is my second stay at Affinia Chicago, with the last being four years ago. The hotel has undergone a nice renovation since my last stay. I stayed in the Queen Studio Suite which is much larger than you are likely to find for a similar price this close to Michigan Avenue. Bed was very comfortable and pillow menu is a nice touch. A couple of things that were slightly disappointing: 1) water pressure was poor due to the fact you had to turn almost all the way to hot to get a warm shower 2) the exercise room, while nice, only had one fully functional treadmill (among the three in the room).

The comfort, location and amenities were well worth the price paid (Travelzoo special). Overall I would recommend the property with the caveat that you can book for less than $200/night.

Tip: If you need parking and won't be taking your vehicle in and out during your stay I would avoid the $52/night valet and park in public garage nearby. I found one for $28 for 24 hours only three blocks away and saved almost $50 for my two night stay.

I was in Chicago for the birth of my grand-daughter & needed a place very close to Prentice Hospital. I got an excellent rate because my daughter was at the hospital next door. This was only a 2 minute walk. It was a 5 minute walk to the Michigan Ave. stores. The Affinia was next door to a very good pizza place. I had a snack at the hotel bar & it was very good. I felt very safe in this area even though I was alone. I would come back here again. I highly reccomend it!

Dear camperchic, First and foremost, congratulations on the birth of your granddaughter! What an exciting time and I'm glad you felt some extra TLC by our staff and amenities offered. Good tip about Gino's East - it's a Chicago pizza staple and must try for visitors. If you didnt this time, next time be sure to get a pass from our front desk so you can cut the line. I hope we'll be able to welcome you back with the birth of your next grandchild...or sooner! Stephen Blackford, GM

I stayed at the Affinia for one night as part of a USA Coast to Coast tour.On arrival,I was a bit shocked when reception staff demanded $50 as security against mini-bar usage.I learned that this was hotel policy,so fair enough. That aside,I was pleased with the room I was allocated as it had a large comfortable bed,a large screen tv,coffee/tea making facility and a good en-suite.The aforesaid mini-bar was well stocked, but not with items I would have purchased.I did not have breakfast at the hotel,so I can't comment on that.
The hotel is situated just off Michigan Avenue which is ideal for shops etc.Just a short walk from the hotel is The John Hancock Center, the second highest building in Chicago after the Willis Tower. The views of Chicago from the top of the JHC were amazing and was a great alternative to Willis Tower. There is so much to see and do in Chicago,I wished I'd had more time to do it all, maybe some other time. But,all in all,I enjoyed my very short stay at the Affinia,
(almost forgot my $50) and would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less traffic noise.

Dear Milzofaegala, A coast to coast trip? Man, I'm jealous! Thanks for the complimentary review; I'm glad you found the location ideal & were able to get out and explore all this great city has to offer! I agree the views from John Hancock are quite amazing - you can see 4 states! Thanks for your understanding about the refundable debit card fee, it's standard in US hotels. I hope next time your travels bring you to Chicago, you'll stay with us. Stephen Blackford, GM

This was a great stay. From the moment we arrived and were upgraded to a studio suite I was impressed - by the service, location, and facilities. Probably the best-value hotel we have ever stayed at, given how nice and central it is to many downtown sights. Highly recommended. The one minor drawback was the long wait for the elevators. This large building is served by just two cars.
