“Perfect everything”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

I was looking for a nice, clean, affordable hotel conveniently located between Navy Pier and Lincoln Park in Chicago, and the Whitehall Hotel was the perfect choice! All the museums and parks that we wanted to visit were within a pleasant walking distance (within 1 mile) from the hotel, but if need be, there's plenty of buses or taxis to catch less than a block away on Michigan Ave.

The staff was friendly, helpful, and welcoming, the room was clean, comfortable, and decorated in lovley, warm earth tones, and the bed was very comfortable. The room was surprisingly quiet for being in the middle of a big city. The room was eqipped with a large-screen t.v. The only problem with the t.v. was that the signal sometimes became lost or "pixilated", so we had to change channels, but that was no big problem since we weren't visiting Chicago to watch t.v.! The room also had a mini-bar and a small refridgerator, which seemed to be locked (at least we couldn't figure out how to open it). The in-room WiFi was very fast, which we very much appreciated.

In the morning there was a copy of USA World News Today at our door - much appreciated for the train ride back home! There's no breakfast restaurant in the hotel, but they offer complimentary coffee. There's a pancake restaurant just a couple of blocks north that worked just fine for us.

Room Tip: Our room was on the 13th floor facing Delaware St., and we got a good night's sleep.

Dear Vasterbotten,

I am glad to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay with us. I feel that the Whitehall Hotel is so perfectly positioned in Chicago that we really offer a great place for guests looking to explore Chicago. I know we have a wonderful staff here that will do whatever it takes and it looks as though they conveyed that to you doing your stay. We recently upgraded our TV system, so I do apologize for the issues that you experienced. We are working to correcting the issue. This is also the case with the minibars. We are working towards working out the kinks. I am glad to see that you were able to enjoy the coffee and newspaper that is provided for our guests. Just so you are aware we do have a restaurant that serves breakfast right here in the hotel. The next time you visit the Whitehall I hope you will join us in the restaurant and enjoy our wonderful breakfast that we offer.

Thank you for taking the time to review us and I hope you come back to visit with us. When you do come back to visit us please contact me so that I may ensure that your stay with us is as wonderful as your most recent stay.

Sincerely,

Sean Coghlan

Just returned from Chicago -- made reservations at The Whitehall but was skeptical. We had taken an early flight into Chicago and arrived at the hotel just before 11 a.m. We were greeted at the door of the taxi by Bellman Augustine who made us feel that we had just arrived back home and he was so glad to see us! Our next contact was Toni at the front desk. She was warm, welcoming, professional, and made us feel that she had been anxiously awaiting OUR arrival! We received an upgrade on the room to a Junior Suite and complimentary breakfasts for the next morning! When we arrived at our room, we couldn't have been more pleased.... it was roomy, clean, recently updated -- and had all the charm we had hoped for. The location is astonishingly good... and the price of our room was very reasonable for this beautiful, historical hotel; all the staff were friendly and made us feel like VIPs. We were within walking distance to the beach, Michigan Avenue, fabulous restaurants and clubs, the Hancock Tower -- almost everything; and best of all it was less than 2 blocks from our son & daughter-in-law's apartment! The Whitehall has suddenly become our "go to" place to stay when we visit Chicago again -- which will be soon! Thank you to Augustine and Toni especially for your hospitality and being instrumental in our falling in love with this place!

Dear mtoast50,

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at the Whitehall. Thank you for your kind words about Toni and Augustine as well as the rest of the staff for the service they provided. We truly have a remarkable team here and we are proud of the way they take care of the guests. Chicago is a great city and I am glad that the Whitehall is the perfect location to visit your daughter-in-law. It is great to have a home away from home when you are traveling and I am honored that the Whitehall is that home in Chicago. Thank you again for your kind words and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Whitehall!

Sincerely,

Just had 3 night stay at The Whitehall.. Had a very nice room, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. Bathroom although clean could do with an upgrade. Definitely showing its age !! We had 2 fridges in room - one was a minibar and other one just empty. We came back one night and realised that the fridge had suddenly been locked. This would not have been an issue if we had only wanted our water but my friend has Insulin medication in there. I contacted Front Desk who said "they would look into it" about 5 mins later we heard a click and the fridge was suddenly opened !! I did speak to the Front Desk in the morning but no-one could actually give me a straight answer why the fridge was suddenly locked remotely. I was not happy as if we had needed the Insulin urgently there may have been a problem. I assume Hotel is going to charge people for using the Fridge in the future.
We used the bar once, only people in there. Went in one night about 10.30pm and was closed !!
Hotel in good location, we went everywhere on bus and subway. Chicago is a great city !!

Dear DEBRALLondonU_k,

Thank you for choosing the Whitehall hotel and sharing your review with us. We recently renovated most of our rooms here at the hotel and are continuing to improve the rooms. We have also recently upgraded our minibars and have experienced some technical difficulties since implementing the system. I do apologize that this caused issues during your stay with us. We hope to have the issues fixed and will inform the staff so that they may relay the information to our guests. I understand that in a situation like needing to keep insulin cool that this can be frustrating. I am glad you enjoyed your stay in our wonderful city and I hope that you choose the Whitehall for any future trips. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me personally so that I may ensure that your next stay with us is nothing short of fantastic.

Regards,
Sean Coghlan

Stayed there for four days recently and would definitely come back again. The hotel is reasonably priced considering it is a block from the expensive shopping on Michigan Ave. and walking distance from the Gold Coast. The room was clean and a decent size and the hotel staff was pleasant and efficient. The only negative mark I would give it was for the fitness room. The photos uses the magic of mirrors to give the impression the fitness room is much larger. The fitness room is small with two treadmills (one not working) and an elliptical trainer, since I was the only person using the room I didn't care, but this can be a problem for the exercise inclined.I didn't come to Chicago to use the fitness room, however, and overall I think the hotel is an excellent place to stay when visiting Chicago, because of it's location, staff and price.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view, ours was looking at the side of a building

We stayed at the hotel for 5 days and 4 nights and the staff was friendly and extremely helpful.
I would like to give a shout out to Toni our receptionist, Alex our doorman and Jim in maintenance for making our first time in Chicago a pleasant one.

Perfect location, near the lake, 360 (old John Hancock building), resturants and subway.

Room Tip: Some rooms are just outside the elevator, so you might want to request one down the hall.

We stayed in the Whitehall Hotel in Chicago the middle of May 2014. The people are super friendly and helpful. The rooms, while smaller than one might be used to, are lovely. Our room had a marvelous view down East Delaware Place to Lake Michigan. We would definitely stay there again.
