“Tiny rooms / expensive parking”
Reviewed 30 June 2012

Another of the several small boutique hotels in renovated old buildings in downtown Chicago. Although the bathroom was ok (and clean), the room was tiny. A small desk was the only piece of furniture other than the bed and a little tiny table where they had placed a coffee maker and ice bucket (against a wall that did not even have an electrical outlet!) No luggage stand in the room, so we had to put our suitcases on the desk. The queen bed was less than a foot from one wall and the foot of the bed was about 2 feet from another wall, so was a little tricky for nocturnal trips to the bathroom. The closet could not have been 18" wide, and they crammed a safe and small cabinet in there (since there was no room for a dresser in the room?) which took up all the hanging clothes space. A nice touch were the two miniature reading lights on either side of the headboard. Too bad one of them didn't work, since there wasn't much light in the room. The only saving grace was the large frosted window in the bathroom, which added some natural light in the morning and a ledge to put your toiletries, since there was little room around the sink and little shelf space under it. Good thing we were only staying for one night! Oh, and did I tell you that the walls were paper thin?

Room Tip: I see that other reviewers had larger rooms. You may want to ask about and get those confirmed befor...

Thank you for your review following your stay with us! While our rooms are cozy, they are comparable to similar hotels in the downtown metro Chicago area. In the future if there is a light bulb that goes out in your room, please call the front desk and we'll remedy the situation as soon as possible. Thank you again and have a nice day!

The rooms are small but manageable compared to the loud party across the hall, the street noise by Trader Joe, and the guy crowing cock-a-doodle-do at 5 am. The bed was soft and the pillows lumpy even though we were told they are relatively new. Management made all the right listening noises when we wanted to change rooms but they said they were full. A discount would have made me a happier camper. This hotel is historic and a great location for downtown Chicago. But this place doesn't seem up to the normal HI Express. The usual breakfast fare; avoid the plastic omelette and stick to the cereal and hard boiled egg; there is a Starbuck's across the street. It is downtown Chicago but the weekend rate was really high for the quality.

Room Tip: Lots of street noise on the Trader Joe side.

Rooms are like jail cells--small and dingy. The air conditioning unit made annoying noise all night and with a late arrival it was not possible to change rooms. Beds less than comfortable. Best thing about this place is the free breakfast-all you can eat!!! OK place if you don't do anything but sleep and eat breakfast! It IS Chicago but it did seem expensive for what I received in amenities ( little) and comfort.

Room Tip: You may want to stay higher than the third floor.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Cass for two nights. I knew the rooms were small, but boy are they small! The hotel was built in the 1920 so the room size makes sense for that time. Outside of being small the rooms were really clean and comfortable. The hotel was recently renovated do the decor is very contemporary. The bathroom was not tiny, definitely not huge though, but room for me and all of my cosmetics. The staff is great at the hotel, friendly, helpful and always there. They gave us directions and great recommendations for restaurants. The free continental breakfast is nice, don't miss the cinnamon rolls! The breakfast area was large, but still really busy. Oh and lastly the elevator is really slow, especially at peak times. If you are able bodied I would recommend taking the stairs (at least down) to avoid waiting.

I would definitely stay here again for a short Chicago trip! One of my favorite things was the photos of odd looking chickens in the lobby across from the elevators. I laughed everytonr I saw them.

There are not enough words to describe the simply WONDERFUL staff at the Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Cass. From Jackie Wilson, the front office manager, to front desk staff Sean, Fran, Caleb and even Verina (in housekeeping), the friendliness, warmth and willingness to "go the extra mile" to make the stay pleasant was consistent and delightful. Unfortunately, despite a room upgrade to a lovely two-room suite on the 16th floor, middle-of-the-night deliveries from the Trader Joe's across the street, coupled with noise from the elevator, made it hard to sleep and, ultimately, we cut our stay short.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room away from the workings of the elevator. Original hotel, though renovated, is m...

We arrived in Chicago at 9 am and the room was ready for us to drop off our bags and they even let us help ourselves the the breakfast buffet! So we ended up getting 2 free big breakfasts. The check in guy gave me several helpful pamphlets without me even asking, one had a great map of the city that we used. Checkout is at 12, and they even held our bags until our train departure at 6!! The doormen were SO friendly and helpful. When we needed a cab, two of them stood on either end of the street til they finally got an unoccupied one. For being right in the city, I would expect a small room for the good price. You want a big spacious room, go spend $300 on an overrated 5 star.
