The Chicago Parthenon Hostel
Reviewed 3 July 2014

I'm fairly local. I took the Amtrak for a short solo trip to Chicago so didn't want to pay $200 for a hotel for just me. I stayed on a Wed on the main floor in a front/street side 6 girl dormer (114). Positives: linens and bathroom were clean. Showers worked and were hot (yay!). Towel rental was convenient and def worth the $2. It was super quiet, since it wasn't the weekend. Staff were very friendly. Convenient location to blue line. Negatives: bed was uncomfortable (hard). Not enough outlets in the room and not in right location to charge your phone overnight and keep it with you in bed. Kitchenette smelled badly of b.o. Bathroom stalls were TINY. I'm small and there wasn't enough room to sit on the toilet and shut the stall door. It was shabby; there were walls that needed significant drywall repair.

The thought of sharing a room and bathroom with strangers never appealed to me but the thought of having this experience intrigued me. Plus, the price of the stay in the heart of Chicago was GREAT!! Yes, you have to take your bags up the steps to get to your rooms, so travel light. The front desk person was extremely helpful. The place was overall clean and in pretty good shape. The free breakfast was fantastic. There is a Greek restaurant across the street where the food, drinks and atmosphere was off the hook. I would recommend a stay here and will try more hostels in the future!!

Myself and a friend stayed at the Chicago Parthenon Hostel for three nights recently and had a mixed experience. We stayed in a two-person private room, which was long but awkwardly narrow. The sheet on one of the beds was not clean when we arrived, but the beds were relatively comfortable. The room was air conditioned to a nice temperature and there wasn't any issues with noise from outside.

The bathrooms of the hostel were average at best. One of the times I tried to have a shower the hot water did not work. Another time the automatic lights in the bathroom went out while I was in the shower and I had to get out to turn them back on. We were able to overlook the issues with the hostel though considering it is only a stones throw from the city centre and right near a blue line train station (which goes to the airport and connects with other key lines). Most of the other hostels we considered were in a much worse location then the Parthenon and cost a similar price.

It wasn't the worst hostel we've stayed in nor the best. The room was tiny and the twin beds were about 6 inches apart because the room was really that narrow. There was hair in the blanket on the bed and the toilet stalls in the women's bathroom were a joke. The toilets are just a few inches from the door so a tall person has to leave the door ajar to be able to sit down. But as others have pointed out the location is wonderful. We went almost directly across the street in the morning for a fantastic breakfast.

Room Tip: We did see a much nicer room being cleaned so we know there are some in there - somewhere.

The room was fairly clean and the kitchen was right next door. There were five of us in the six bed suite and we didn't feel too crowded. The front desk people were really nice and check in/out was a breeze.

Is a very bad place to spend even one night! My two friends and I had a very bad experience about the room. It was not clean, a lot of hair in the blankets, the room is pretty cold at night. The owners really should take care of make it a better place for the next guests. The breakfast was fine but the bed was probably the worst I have slept ever. The price is not cheap and you can find better places for the same or lower price. Be careful..
There is no parking and the parking they gave us is with some rude Greek guys, they don't know a thing about costumer service. They stole 45 dollars from us and the service was terrible.

Room Tip: not good beds

This hostel is very comfortable, the location is great, the subway is near , you have restaurant and blues bars a steps from the hostel. The breakfast makes you feel like you're staying in a hotel. The bedroom is a little odorous but you can sleep very well , and the bathroom is a small but you can have an excellent hot shower.
