On a nice day, Navy Pier packs in a lot of the stuff people enjoy--views of the city from the pier that extends into the lake, checking out boats (large and small), some rides (the Ferris wheel has a tremendous view but is a little pricey for a short ride. Bring your camera.), snacks and open-air spots to have a drink as well as some nicer restaurants for dining, and even live music on summer weekends. But....it is crowded and some of this can feel quite touristy. If you enjoy art, however, go inside and see the exhibit of Louis Tiffany stained glass. And if you are enjoying the lakefront, continue on toward the north and walk the lakeshore to get to two beaches (oak street and North ave. beaches) which may also have live music on the weekend. You can also rent bikes and bicycle-cart/cars to transport several people with shade.
