I was pleasantly surprised by this beach. It was calm, clean, and easily accessible. We enjoyed a quiet morning on the beach before visiting other area attractions.

Oak Street Beach is a picture postcard that Norman Rockwell could have painted. It would have been titled "the most magnificent landfill in the world." There are many vistas that visitors to Chicago see and Oak Street Beach rates right up there with Navy Pier, Water Tower, Magnificent Mile, Wrigley Field, Willis Tower and Millennium Park. It is located at the north end of North Michigan Avenue, in the middle of sun-drenched playgrounds. Lake Shore Drive curves around it as it travels from the north and wanders south toward Navy Pier and Grant Park and the Museum Campus. It is a gathering hot spot with a backdrop of Lake Michigan's glistening beauty and a framed by majestic skyscrapers of downtown Chicago. If you have a lakefront view from your room in the Drake Hotel, you can appreciate Oak Street Beach and Chicago's marvelous lakefront all the way to North Avenue Beach. On a hot summer day, 55,000 bathers once filled the shoreline. It is a beach lovers' destination for food, fun and sun. There are bathers, bikers, runners, joggers and walkers. It also has been a site for amateur and professional volleyball tournaments. It also is a good place to view the city's annual Air and Water Show, which attracts as many as 2 million people to the waterfront. In 2011, Jeff Zimmerman created a mural called "You know what you should do," which is 260 feet in length and can be seen at the Oak Street Beach underpass. It raises awareness of beach health and water quality issues. It is very relaxing to sit on a bench by the water and view the skyline that surrounds you. This is Chicago and it is beautiful.

Being accustomed to coastal beaches, I couldn’t imagine one on a lake. If I had to pick between Oak Street Beach and North Beach -- North Beach, hands down. Not only is Oak Street Beach much smaller, but not as nice overall. We tried to take a stroll on the walkway during rush hour – mistake!! Walkers beware, as you will get run over by the bikers hauling it out of the city. Even some of the joggers were a bit aggressive. There seems to be some unposted rules of the road, of which you will quickly learn once you hit the pavement. I understand why this beach is popular, because it’s close to the city, but it’s worth going up to North Beach.

Good beach with lots of fun things to do. Its small but great to have in such a big city. Surely the hotest spot in a hot summer day.

If it wasn't for the four lane motorway right along side it, this beach might be a peaceful retreat. But something about still being in the centre of the city and yet being able to sunbathe or play volleyball is what gives this beach its charm. It's the perfect place to run or relax in the summer evenings.
