While not a top sight if you have limited time, this temple was beautiful inside. Plus, as the highest temple in the world, you got a great view of the surrounding buildings from the rooftop observation deck. Check on visiting hours - they may be limited since this is a working religious site.

A hidden gem mentioned to me by a tour guide. A free tour at 2 PM every day except Sunday, if you want something a bit different from the usual city-fare and are interested in historic buildings then this may be for you.

This was an interesting tour of an older building in Chicago. We were able to visit the Sky Chapel which was added by a donation from the Founders of Walgreens. It is the highest worship building in the world.

Who knew there was a chapel in the sky - just across from work. This is a must-do tour in the city as it is a gem that many do not know about.

For many years I have wanted to take the free tour of the Sky Chapel at the Chicago Temple. This winter some friends and I worked the tour into part of our annual holiday party. We were mostly interested in the architecture of the building, but the history turned out to be equally fascinating. Our tour guide (a volunteer from the congregation) did a great job of relating this history without preaching or trying to convert anyone. There was no pressure to give any money, and this made for a most enjoyable experience.

The Sky Chapel itself was quite attractive and we were even able to open some of the windows at the top so that we could look down at the city below. Towards the end of our tour we asked our guide if it was possible to access an exterior balcony. After helping other guests down from the tower, she took our smaller group out onto a balcony from which we had an open-air view of the skyline. The balcony was on the northeast side of the building, so we could even see the Christkindlmarket below in Daley Plaza. By far, this outside portion of the tour was our favorite part (although the Chapel was still quite impressive).

If you go, you should be aware that the tour includes a climb up several flights of stairs (maybe 4 or 5 stories in total). There is a small elevator available for those who are unable to make the climb, but it only fits a few people at a time. Once at the top, all visitors must then be able to ascend one final staircase to reach the temple itself. Tours are operated at 2:00 PM Monday through Saturday and are completely free. If you are in the area and have some time to spare, you should certainly consider a visit to this wonderful Chicago landmark.
