“Surprised this doesn't have a higher ranking!”

This is a premium experience in downtown Chicago. The employees at this property (from the door men to the club lounge are exceptional. If you are in Chicago for a long term stay, this is the property that should be your second home. From the moment they greet you curbside by name it's an excellent experience. The rooms are gorgeous, great gym, personal trainers, beautiful spa, close to everything and a first rate staff that does their absolute best to make you feel comfortable. I am actually quite surprised this property isn't in the top 10!

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms. The showers are pretty legendary. Mine had a tv in the bathroom mirror! So...

This was my first time at the JW Marriott in Chicago. I was very impressed with the rooms. The room was very modern, and the bathrooms were very done and spacious. The lobby was also very modern, but a little small.

This is a wonderful old building that has been recently turned into a very fine hotel. It's in the financial district so it's probably not a classic tourist stop. However, we were tourists and the location proved to be excellent because of the fine Chicago public transportation system and our enjoyment of walking.

In many rooms, you'll hear some noise from the El but otherwise it's a good sleep -- Marriott bedding at its best, nice thick doors, quiet plumbing, etc. The bathrooms are of a very high standard with nice amenities. And, the room had the cleanest smell of any hotel room we have been in in perhaps 20 years. There is no heavy-duty deodorizer smell whatsoever.

We had Executive Lounge access and that proved to be wonderful. It was staffed by great people who were proud of their hotel and their city. Nice breakfasts, afternoon snacks and desserts. A real bonus! I love my Platinum card.

Every -- that's EVERY -- employee was exceptionally friendly, welcoming, courteous, helpful and all those other good things. They really are happy to have you in "their" hotel. Next time we are in Chicago, they'll have us back.

I was thoroughly impressed with the service here. I was greeted warmly by each employee and most of the time was greeted by name. My room was completely clean, bed was comfortable, and room service was good. I will definitely stay here again.

They waited until we arrived at the hotel and handed them our credit card to inform us that there was an outbreak of legionnaires disease at their hotel that resulted in two deaths. The girl at the front desk gave us a slip of paper explaining the situation, which according to them meant there was no risk. Far be it from me to understand the implications, but I'd like to know ahead of time so I can decide for myself. Especially when the spa and pool were shut down due to the outbreak and you had booked your stay with the hotel in part because of those facilities. Just terrible handling of a difficult situation. I realize business is business, but if that's the case, I'll do my business elsewhere from now on.

Otherwise, the rooms were nice and the location was perfect for our visit. Of course, we paid significantly for it. I'm a believer in the idea that you get what you pay for - and we would have had the spa and pool been open. Since it wasn't, we didn't, and that warrants a poor grade in my book.

We stayed at this hotel for a single night with our 2 young boys as a little "staycation" before they went back to school after Winter Break.... Our room was an east-facing double with a huge bathroom.... Our view was the historic Rookery Building, which is pretty cool. It was spacious with a large screen TV.

The thing that struck me about this hotel is it's a very old building, yet Marriott did it right when they made it into their hotel... Each floor and room is new, fresh and light.... The lobby and bar area is new, modern, yet not too contemporary.... We've stayed at other downtown hotels, such as the Knickerbocker, and they were quite dark and dreary, and not too pleasant to stay in.... The crystal clear swimming pool and spa were relaxing, complete with New Age mood music.... While the pool area was nice, it seemed a bit sterile and i think it would have been an even nicer experience if it had windows.... The the gym facilities were very nice and clean....

The staff were great: first, we were assigned a king room.... When we got up there, we realized it was too small for our needs, so we requested a double room... They obliged, no problem. Then, one of our boys got injured in the pool area and they were very helpful in getting ice and seeing that he was alright.... And if that wasn't enough, we forgot a couple of clothing articles in the original king room, which was turned in, and thus returned to us....

We ate at the bar restaurant on the first floor lobby area. We would rate the food as very good. We had a hummus platter appetizer which was excellent as was the chicken panini.... The French onion soup, while it was very tasty and delicious, it had too much cheese for me.... Not a big deal if you love/tolerate a lot of cheese.... Chicken tenders for the kids were good, and the portions were huge for them... Had we known, we would have just gotten one serving for them to share..... The atmosphere was relaxing.

The reasons why i didn't give the JW Marriott a full 5 are as follows:

Double beds. Our room had more than enough space to accommodate 2 queens. Why hotels/motels go with the double (read: full size) beds set-up is beyond me. The rooms are advertised as being spacious and good for families. Full-sized beds are barely adequate---queens would be much better....

Location. While the location is decent and just a reasonable walk from Millennium/Grant Park and a stone's throw from "The El", nevertheless, it's in the financial district... For some, especially business travelers, it's an asset (pun intended)... But for the tourist, the financial district tends to die out over the weekend---not much activity going on.... So, for what it's worth, if being close to the touristy stuff is very important, you may wanna reconsider staying at this location...

Mini bar. The mini bar fridge has sensors inside that tell the front desk if you remove, or even just move any of the items inside, thus rendering it useless for personal food/drink items.... Again, if this is going to be a family-friendly room, the fridge should be too....

In conclusion, the JW Marriott is a very nice property and i would definitely recommend it for business travelers... As for tourists, i would say if you get a great deal and/or proximity to all the action isn't that important, definitely book it.

Room Tip: It appears odd-numbered rooms face outside, and even numbered rooms face an interior courtyard...

Hotel was quite nice but the staff confiscated alcohol stating it was in their policy?? Granted it was lollapalooza weekend and I'm sure this was just a precaution however I found this decision to be quite offensive. Sadly, that was not the worst part of our trip. On the way home, my sister became quite ill and remained ill for quite some time. Approximately 3 weeks after we returned home we received an email from the hotel stating that we had all been exposed to legionnaires disease during our stay. My sister, after several visits to the doctors was finally diagnosed with the disease contracted from the fountain in the lobby of this hotel. Needless to say we were not impressed and would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
