“A visit to the Gilded Age”
Reviewed 28 October 2012

The Driehaus (say: DREE-house) Museum will knock your socks off if you like spectacular homes of the Gilded Age. While not the same huge size, the Driehaus is every bit as impressive as the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina. The mansion has been carefully restored at great expense with its precious woods, tiling, carvings, and stained glass. The house is full of period furniture and accessories from Richard Driehaus's collection. Much of the decor is "over the top" but quite stunning.

We were lucky enough to get into the Driehaus Museum for free on an Architectural Open Day special which was happening when we visited Chicago. Lucky us, we queued for 3/4hr and it was well worth it.
To see the opulence in which the elite of Chicago lived in the 19C was a real eye opener and treat. It is so OTT that it just has to be seen to be believed. Amazing marble hall and staircase, a huge domed stained glass ceiling in one room, fabulous carvings everywhere, Tiffany lamps, built in everything, you name it, Driehaus has it.
Very friendly volunteers and we were able to take photos without flash.
Take your time, there is almost too much to take it.

“Wanna be a parlormaid? Or butler?”
Reviewed 22 October 2012

The museum is interesting, but I wasn't that crazy about the gimmick. Everyone going in is given a card telling what position they're applying for in this 19th century mansion. I think I was supposed to be interviewing for a parlormaid. It was cute, but gimmicky, and sometimes annoying. The interior itself was quite interesting.

“An extraordinary experience at the Driehaus”
Reviewed 16 October 2012

This was an exquisitely restored home from the gilded age of 19th century Chicago. The house reflects awe-inspiring workmanship and design. In addition, Mr. Driehaus has filled the house with pieces from his extensive collection of Tiffany, Art Nouveau and other artists of the period. Definitely spend the extra $5.00 on the tour. Our knowledgeable guide, Lisa Brown brought the era and the house to life.

“Must see to experience the gilded age”
Reviewed 14 October 2012

Visited during open house the weekend of October 13. An outstanding example of a a gilded age mansion, very much like Newport mansions. Fantastic architecture, decorative arts and furniture. A delight to see. Just off Miracle Mile and accessible.
