“modern, trendy, good location”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

We spent four nights at W Chicago, located right in the middle of the Loop. It is within walking distance to the Field Museum and Grant Park. As it is primarily a financial district, at night there is not much entertainment in the immediate neighborhood and you’ll need to walk, cab or take the conveniently located train to and from most nightlife. Our room was large, with a comfortable king-sized bed and modern chaise lounge for reading. The room had no view but did have a desk, something that I use while travelling. The room had no tub; call and ask if this is a feature you look for. As SPG Starwood members, we got good service but had to iron over a glitch in booking which would have divided our stay over two rooms. We straightened this out, but after this experience and after reading other reviews, be aware that how you book a room may cause issues and affect the quality of the room you are given. Like all Ws, the lobby is self-consciously ultramodern, with disco-moody world music playing loudly at all times. The bartender seemed offended when asked if it was possible for her to make a non-alcoholic version of a drink (it was not) and surprisingly did not have a friendly, or even friendlyish, response to what is a standard bar question. Self-serve coffee from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the lobby was an appreciated touch.

My wife and I were looking for a hotel close to downtown and tourist attractions to spend our wedding anniversary. We got that and more! Eden was spectacular at making my wife and I feel comfortable and she helped make our anniversary a memorable one, setting up flowers, complimentary champagne and chocolates, room upgrade....all before we arrived. Amazing!
The hotel's location was absolutely perfect for us, close to restaurants, shops, Michigan avenue, art institute and other tourist attractions...

We will definitely return to Chicago and stay in the W.

On a weekend when hotels were going for $250+ in downtown Chicago we Pricelined a 4 star property in the loop and landed the W for about $155. Good location and we enjoyed our stay. We would stay again -- if the price point was right. The biggest drawback was the small size of the room.

Here are some of our general observations:

Very small king rooms.
Awesome king beds...one of the best.
Very modern...and good use of small space. (It was almost like staying in an Ikea model room)
Nice bathroom.
Noise from the L, but for us it wasn't a big deal.
Electronic safe was a nice feature.
The entire hotel is trendy and different than others downtown.
Bar was lively
Great location to transportation, etc...
Front desk was very small and cramped...expect a check-in line

Room Tip: Ask for a street side room...not a back side room. The L is loud if you're at the back of the p...

I hosted a professional at the W Hotel May 8-9 and Eden Bernal was an incredible help with coordinating our shipments, helping with customer service issues and really, just going above and beyond to make sure our event was a success.

One thing that Eden helped with, which I will never forget, is that I was expecting a package to arrive and for some reason it was delayed and didn’t arrive until after I had checked out on the 9th. Eden personally delivered it to me at my office in Chicago so that I wouldn’t incur international shipping costs (and time) to have it mailed to be back home in Canada. I couldn’t believe she went out of her way to do this and was so impressed with the way she represented the hotel with this kind gesture.

The hotel is stunning, rooms were impeccably maintained and the staff really did everything possible to make this event a success.

I have stayed at this and many other W hotels. This time was better than the last time and actually i liked it a lot. PM concierge suggested 3 restaurants and made reservations - printed out menus for us to choose from - we went to joe fish which was superb. Room had a strange configuration but that bed. I slept so well.

The W Chicago - City Center hotel is just inside the Loop in downtown Chicago. Only 2 blocks from the river to the West, and about 2 blocks from the Willis Tower (home of the SkyView attraction). In 10-15 minutes, you can walk to all sorts of things - shopping, Grant Park, downtown businesses, and all sorts of restaurants.

The rooms are on the nicer side. Upgrading to a "spectacular" room gets you much more space, and is worth it if you are claustrophobic. The "anywhere/anytime" service was quick to respond to my requests (although a broken outlet on the desk was not fixed as promised, reducing the places to plug in from "challenging" to "almost non-existent"!)

I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The "superior" rooms are worth the upgrade. Ask for a room with a courtyard view for less...

I arrived at the hotel on Sunday, August 10th (my birthday), I was traveling with my good friend, we misplaced a bag with both of our her identification and my credit card inside (we didn't realize things were lost until we'd arrived at the hotel). All I had was a check/debit card and cash on me, the Front Desk clerk said that I could not use cash to secure the reservation and gave us directions to walk to the nearest ATM. The store was closed and we could not access the ATM inside, we walked for another block (extremely hot and irritated) to find that yet another store was closed.

When we returned to the hotel and asked to speak with a manager, the MOD came out (I explained our story) and she said that we'd need to load the cash onto the check card in order to check-in. We were AGAIN sent out to a nearby ATM (hot, frustrated and dragging our luggage). The doorman gave us directions to another possible ATM, after walking for blocks we finally found an ATM around the corner from the hotel.

We returned to the hotel and was finally able to check-in. We were sent to the wrong room, the Front Desk clerk gave us keys and sent us to the wrong room. We were directed to room 2019 (the number written on our key holder), after trying repeatedly to get into the room a guest came to the door and said that she'll be in the room for another day. I called the front desk and was told to go to room 2012.

After being in our room for only 15 minutes, a man carrying a clipboard walked in (without warning) to ask what time we'll be checking out. The next morning at 9 a woman came to the door to ask when we'd be checking out and again at 11 in the morning. I was asked when I'd like to check-out at the time of check-in, I told the front desk clerk that we'd be checking out at noon no the 11th.

Room Tip: Our room 2012, had no view at all.
