Had a Groupon for this wine bar and was excited to use it based on previous reviews. It is somewhat hard to find, being in a business building, kind of hidden behind a wall in a lobby. We eventually did find it thanks to a woman standing around who did not appear to work at the building.

Our deal was for a wine flight and cheese/meat plate. Our waiter was very brusque, saying we had easy choices. He pointed to the menu which had descriptions of a predetermined set of white or red wines in a flight and said we just the simple choice of white or red. He also said we had choices from a variety of cheese and meats. He went on to describe the reds and when we questioned why the reds he described did not match the ones he pointed to on the menu, he just said "I said it was reds, not necessarily THOSE reds". Well, then, maybe a simple up front explanation that the choice of red wines explicitly noted on the menu may not be the ones you would get would be in order and kind of what his job is?

Since we then felt he was rushing us to decide on our cheeses and meats, we said we had picked a couple cheeses but would like one more that was not a hard cheese and could he recommend. He did and the plate arrived. However, the cheese he chose for us was another hard cheese which we did not like.

We decided to stay and eat a meal there; nothing remarkable. I had the lamb burger which was fine but was served with sweet potato chips which they also have as an appetizer; they were stale and just not very good.

Overall, very unhappy with the service at this bar and marginally ok with the food. The wine was good, though.

We had a fab wine a cheese pairing here. It was a Thursday night so the place was not that busy, but our waiter said the place is catered around the opera being open. Would def recommend this place to anyone in Chicago!

Visiting Chicago was made more memorable by using a TravelZoo coupon to bring us into this wonderful place. (Construction made finding it difficult even for locals!!) Phoning for a reservation, we were informed that there was a private party until 6pm.. We arrived at 6pm and were informed by a spirited hostess that the party was slow in clearing out but that we would be seated where she would prefer to be herself. We both have fairly good palates for wine but we were introduced to great ways of comparing and pairing wines, cheeses and meats. Our host grasped our knowledge, or rather, lack thereof, and started from there. Never were we made uncomfortable. This was a teacher in a great sense of the word. We were guided to choose white, red or sparkling and chose 3 from the whites for my wife and I had 3 reds. Truly special wines and each distinct from the others. I was so glad for our hosts expertise and guidance. I was especially glad on the meats as there were novelties, e.g. wild boar sausage. There were accents which went so well with the wines, e.g. meat w/fennel seed. We were familiar w/2 of the cheeses and our host concurred and offered suggestions for combinations. Two small slices of fig bread and slices of bread w/an olive oil dipping dish were also on the board. This is not a meal nor were we expecting a meal. It is an event. We met other staff and other patrons but were left to enjoy ourselves almost privately even though seated at a bar... Reorders of the bread appeared quickly and we requested to see the menu for food and succumbed to the temptation to have calamari. It was prepared immediately and was novel- not the deep-fried w/sauce, it was in a fresh salsa w/capers and fine olive oil and garlic and..... and some slices of pita bread. Unimaginable!! What a way to spend an evening!! Staff was incredible and so welcoming. Never did we feel anything but welcome. Highly recommended!!
