“Great location and great hostel”
Reviewed 8 June 2011

We stayed at this hostel for 2 nights in room 328. The room was nice, very clean, basic with a toilet (1/2 ensuite). It was great for what we needed. It was very clean which I was impressed with. The room could sleep 3 people as it had a queen with a single bunk on top. There was also a small desk with a lamp and a small cupboard - very simple room. The room had aircon and a fan which was great. The size was on the smaller size but would feel bigger if it didn't have the top bunk.
There were activities at the hostel but we didn't participate however if you were single, then it would be great to meet people. There was a phone and also free wifi in the room which was great.
The mens showers was near our room however the female showers were far from the room (I had to walk through 2 areas to get to it), and I felt somewhat vulnerable in there as there were no locks etc. The showers were VERY dirty, hair everywhere, not sure when they were last cleaned. My partner said the mens showers were also very dirty. This let the hostel down, I was grossed out big time.
The hostel itself seemed very safe and also the staff let us keep our luggage in a room all day until we left Chicago that night, which was helpful.
The staff were ok, some helped and some seemed bored although overall seemed ok. One person told us check out was 9.30am and another said 11am, not sure what the confusion was.
The location is in Lincoln Park and is BEAUTIFUL. Tree lined streets, cafes, bars, cinema, walk to Lake Michigan, the zoo etc, all close by. Overall, great location, very clean in the room -just wear flip flops in the shower!

Room Tip: Room 328 - very clean with toilet, aircon and fan

This place was great...I had never stayed in a hostel before, but after my experience at Getaway, I'll stay again.

First off, the location is ideal. Absolutely ideal. Not too far from the Loop (an easy train or bus ride away) in an awesome, quiet, tree-lined neighborhood. You can easily walk to tons of restaurants, bars, shops, Lincoln park, and transportation.

The hostel itself was very clean. The bathrooms were a little messy, but not nearly as bad as they could have been.

As with any hostel, it can be a little noisy, depending on who's staying around you. But for the price, I can deal with a little noise.

The breakfast wasn't fancy, but it was FREE, so I was all about it.

I'll probably be staying here again this summer. VERY happy with it.

My partner and I stayed in a private room with a full bath for six nights. It was an extremely large room (bigger than most hotel rooms) and bathroom. The hostel is only a short train ride from central Chicago, however it is easy to access other areas of Chicago using the train. The local area of Lincoln Park is good to explore and so too is the trendy Wicker Park area. The hostel is very clean, provides high security and an adequate breakfast is served daily free of charge. They also have activities most nights if you want to participate, explore Chicago and meet people. I'd highly recommend this hostel if you want to stay is a real Chicago neighborhood and get great value for money.

Room Tip: Book directly through the hostel website.

I stayed here for around 2 weeks whilst trying to find an apartment in Chicago. I have stayed in many hostels over the years and this by far is one of the best. The location is fantastic, the staff are extremely friendly and accommodating and overall the services they provided I dont think could be matched with other hostels in the area. Dont even think twice about booking here - you will not regret it.

I stayed in a private room with shared bathroom (as an almost 30 year old I couldn;t quite face a dorm!) and would really recommend this place. It was cheap compared to other places to stay in Chicago (I did a lot of research!), and the room was comfortable and very clean. There is only one male and one female bathroom per floor so if you're unlucky to get a room far away from it, its a bit of a walk! The bathroom on my floor was clean enough but I took flip flops for the shower and was glad. Only complaint I have is that my room had clearly been broken into at some point and the door could have been repaired a bit better - seemed a bit unsecure. However, you need a swipe card to get into the hostel and the room.

There is free wifi and the breakfast was really good for a free hostel one - good coffee, fresh fuit, cereal, bagels, toast etc. and you help yourself to as much as you want.

Location wise, very good - a 10 minute walk from Fullerton station whichis a few stops from the Loop. The area seemed upmarket and safe, and there were lots of good places to eat nearby (highly recommend breakfast at the Bourgeois Pig).

Would stay there again and highly recommend it to people on a budget.

The Good: Great location (love, love, LOVED the Lincoln Park neighborhood!), pleasantly surprised by quality of the hostel compared to the other American hostel I have stayed at - it's almost like you're staying in a fancy college dormitory. Great/friendly staff and fellow hostellers. Spacious kitchen and lounge space. Plenty of showers/toilets for the girls using the first floor bathroom - I stayed 2 nights/3 days and rarely, if ever, ran into anyone in the bathroom! Short walk to the L trains. The hostel offers a free breakfast every morning (I'm not sure what they offered, since I didn't get up early enough either morning to partake), and have free activities planned several times a week. When I was there, they had free tickets to a blues club. They have several computers with internet and printing available for use, plus they have amazingly fast free wireless internet available as well.

My nitpicks (nothing that will keep me from coming back!): 3 problems. #1: the only lighting in the room I was in were a few small track lights on the ceiling. With 8 girls in the room going to bed at various times, it would have been nice to have small lights on the wall next to each bed. #2: there were only outlets on one side of the room! #3: no dressing area in the showers, so you got soaked getting dressed or you had to make a mad dash to a toilet stall to get dressed.
