“Clean and good location”
Reviewed 1 January 2014

Everything was great and the hostel was clean. There were sufficient bathrooms for our use and we didn't need not queue or wait. The only downside was the water pressure for the shower was a bit too low.

IHSP Hostel was the PERFECT lodging for our wedding group! We used the apartment as our "wedding suite," which has a kitchen, futon, chairs, and side bedroom. This was the ideal set-up for our evenings to hang out and celebrate with our friends, as well as for our bachelorette party the morning before. All of our friends were able to find the perfect rooms to stay in either groups or privately, and IHSP worked to keep our group together in the same building. The staff at IHSP were PHENOMENAL! They all signed us a wedding card and gave us a bottle of champagne. They also hosted a Chicago Dog "dinner night" for us and our guests and decorated the Sky Deck. All of our friends were hesitant at first about staying at a hostel for our wedding, but it turned out to be the ideal location (in Wicker Park) and had all of the amenities we needed. Because of the nice accommodations and the helpfulness and charm of the IHSP staff, we had a wonderful wedding weekend!

Room Tip: All of the rooms were very nice. Only some have windows.

It's a typical hostel - so do not expect hotel luxury.
It's well situated, in a nice area with a lot of coffee, bars, etc.
Right next to the blue line (5 min of metro to the Loop).
Beds are confortable.
Enough showers and toilets for everyone, and they are very clean.
Staff is nice and helpfull.
For breakfast, you cook your own pancakes; it's a pretty good idea! Bring your own Nutella/jam/Maple syrup, the syrup provided is liquid sugar...! Coffee and tea available all day.
I'll definitly go back!

Room Tip: Provate rooms = free parking for your car

We recently visited ihsp Chicago for the weekend and over all were pretty pleased. We had a large group of 30 college students and they were very accommodating! The staff was friendly, we enjoyed conversing with the night staff Dan. It was in safe area just minutes away from downtown via train with free parking. The common area was an awesome place for us all to hang out with a new looking clean kitchen, pool table, tv, wi games and computers. The roof deck was also cool- was a little chilly for November though. The bathrooms were community and relatively clean.

The only negative thing was the sheets on the beds were a bit iffy. I think we would have been a bit more comfortable if we had all brought our own pillows and blankets. Over all the place was clean and a good place to hang out. A great economical choice for staying in Chicago.

I stayed here for four nights (3 in male dorm and one in a twin private). I was overall pretty pleased with my stay. The staff was always more than helpful with any questions I had. The location is great because you are so close to the CTA Station (Damen-Blue Line). There are two separate buildings. When booking a private, request the other building. It's much quieter and a little bit nicer in my opinion. Many good restaurants and pubs in the area.

This hostel met our basic needs (bed, shower, shelter) but not much else. One of the main reasons we booked was because it advertised free parking, but on arrival we were told that there was construction going on in the customer parking area and we would have to find a park on the street. The staff recommended a few streets nearby but warned that we would have to "park at our own risk", basically meaning tough luck if we get a fine or towed. A simple and reasonable solution would have been to arrange parking permits for those guests who need them, but this was not an option. It was actually pretty clear that they couldn't care less. It's quite a busy area, so the park we found ended up being a ten minute walk away. We were in the separate building which is a bit of an inconvenience if you want to do anything in the main building, like take advantage of the free breakfast. The facilities generally left a lot to be desired. On top of the aforementioned parking situation, the wifi is really unreliable, constantly dropping in and out (frustrating if you're trying to book anything...), the laundry facilities suddenly disappeared on our second day (seriously one minute there was a washing machine and dryer, the next they were gone), and the air conditioning alternated between blowing hot and cold air for the entirety of our stay. This made for some very disturbed and uncomfortable nights. One redeeming feature was the location - it's in a really trendy area with a lot to see and do (and eat) right at your door step. I guess it really depends on your priorities, but IHSP didn't meet all of ours.

I like this place, it required a little more cleanliness!! But it was a good wholesome hostel, the staff were fun and the common area is an excellent place to kick off the night!! What a night as well, get on a bar crawl and meet the locals, the history of Chicago is amazing and a real eye opener...
