“Lots of good points/minor bad points”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

For the good points: We were enthusiastically greeted by Matthew the front desk manager. He made sure we were comfortable in our room. The room was great if you are traveling with children or teens. We had a separate area with sofa/sleeper, desk and tv. The other side of the room had 2 queens size beds, tv, micro, & fridge. The beds were ok not too lumpy yet. Although upon arrival we only had 3 bath towels for 4 people we called and they sent more towels up instantly. Any time we needed anything they were quick to respond. Great location close to many great restaurants, shopping and within walking distance to many attractions. Also, metro line close by. We loved that mass transit system is so easy to use. We bought a transit pass and used it all day for metro & bus. The breakfast staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good even though they served the same thing every morning. You had eggs, sausage, make your own waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, hot oatmeal with nuts, cinnamon, brown sugar etc, cereals and breads. Security to rooms was good as you had to have your key to get the elevator moving.

Now for the minor bad points: Even on the 12th floor you could hear the firetruck sirens - but only time it was a problem was on Saturday night. The rest of the time it was not bad at all. We opted to park our own vehicle. The parking fee was a bit steep, but we had in and out privileges. Just let the hotel know you want to park it yourself and they will provide you with a card to get into the garage. It was just 1 block over. There was not alot of room in the bathroom to store toiletries, etc. It is so easy to have built in shelves below the sink or have shelves built in on either side of the mirror, When you have 4 or max 5 people in a suite you need lots of room on the vanity or selves or hooks in bathroom! Also, the door had a gap of about 1/2 inch at the bottom that let in light from hallway and noise from the hallway. I know they slip you an invoice the night before your departure but you don't need that big of a gap on the bottom of the door.

Thank you very much for the kind review! It was a pleasure meeting you and your family and I am happy that you were able to enjoy your stay here in Chicago. Some nights are definitely busier than others when it comes to the Chicago Fire Department, however I am glad that the noise did not significantly impact your stay and that you still enjoyed your stay. Hope to see you back soon!

Regards,

This new Fairfield Inn offers the current, typical Marriott offerings of up to date decor, a fairly complete free breakfast, etc. The rooms are adequate in size, though not huge; the bathroom is quite large and very, very nice. The staff is exceptional, and the LOCATION is what makes this a winner. Easy access to the subway, freeways via the Ohio/Ontario connector, walk to either the Michigan Ave. shopping area OR the Loop - the location is simply ideal. There are really great restaurants nearby, like Star of Siam (Thai) or Shaws Crab House (seafood) as well as the Bloomingdales Home Store, and POSH - it goes on and on. The lower floor rooms have limited, or no views - so ask about a higher floor room that clears the nearby low buildings if this is an issue to you. I used to live in this area so I would rather be out and about than to be looking out the window, but who doesn't like a view?

Someone who works in the hospitality industry in Chicago asked what were any downsides to this property. After consideration, I'd have to say that the lighting in the coffee bar area in our room was poor, and only one coffee and one decaf single cup packet were provided, and there were 2 of us. I asked at the desk and more coffee was placed in the room while we were out. That's it. Nothing else to complain about.

Room Tip: South facing rooms will will have a nice, sunny view BUT WILL ALSO look over a busy fire station, so...

My wife and I took a recent 4-day trip to Chicago with our adult child and her significant other. The trip also included my wife's family -- eight of us in all.

Having been frequent travelers to Chicago, it was our responsibility to reserve accommodations.

Since we would be driving to Chicago and the others would be taking the train, we were to arrive early in order to pick the others up from the train station located immediately west of Willis (formerly Sears) Tower. Our group would also be visiting a couple of Chicago's museums located south of the Chicago River. With all of these known details, we decided to venture away from our usual mid-Mag Mile locale in/around Ohio St. and looked for a hotel closer to the Chicago River.

The location of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Downtown/River North fit exactly to our needs.

The hotel, as described by it's name, is just a few blocks north of the river on Illinois St. The hotel is a new construction -- not a rehab. It first opened to the public on June 20,
2013.

Our specific rooms had two comfortable queen beds with a flat screen TV and all of the other normal accoutrements -- as well as a bonus space that included a sofa bed and a second flat screen TV. The hotel has only one room of this kind per floor so our two rooms were above/below each other. This was not inconvenient for us as it gave us a little "breathing room" if you will. The rooms were very comfortable and plenty large enough for our two families.

The hotel has excellent professional staff. The front desk staff gave us helpful pointers about the immediate area. We asked housekeeping to simply replace towels each day and that we didn't need a floor-to-ceiling cleaning each day. She gave us our towels as requested AND fit in a quick bathroom cleaning before we even realized she did anything.

While the hotel's location was great for us, some may balk at the across-the-street proximity of a Chicago fire station. It did not bother us. Anyone who has ever stayed in any hotel anywhere in downtown Chicago will tell you that you WILL hear sirens in all parts of the downtown. You will NOT get away from it.

Upon leaving, my wife explained we will be coming back to this hotel again for our next Chicago trip.

Thank you for the very comprehensive review! I am glad that you were able to enjoy your time here in Chicago and that our team here at the Fairfield was able to assist in making it that much better. I also cannot thank you enough for mentioning that you can hear the Chicago Fire Department, but it really is not anything different than any other hotel, you are just able to see where they start from! Thank you again for choosing our hotel and we look forward to seeing you back sometime soon.

Impressed by the staff, bellman Howard was very helpful. Loved the breakfast and found the young lady servicing the waffle area to be absolutely wonderful. Her cheerful, pleasant attitude and beautiful smile made breakfast better. The room was nice. We were there for a jazz festival, great weekend!

My niece was getting married in Chicago last weekend & my wife & I booked this Fairfield Inn on points for 2 nights..after getting in late thanks to Spirit Airlines ( worst ever, don't fly with them!!) , we checked in at Midnight. Check in went smoothly & person was friendly...asked for a king room high up & got it...it was definitely smaller than I hoped for, since I usually book Residence Inns & Marriott Vacation Timeshare places ( like the Grand Vista in Orlando) , so I am used to 500-1100 SF in footage..this room MAYBE was 300 SF...bed was comfy, there was a 42 in HD flat screen, coffee maker, mini-fridge, alarm clock, the usual I expected..as usual, the shower was a 1960's style shower with NO hand -held style, one of my 3 pet peeves in hotel rooms..not only was it a "ceiling shower" , but you could not change the flow of the water at all..that is, the water came out one way & spray..also no bathtub...I like different settings..also the A/C worked fine as far as temp goes, but once again, like the last hotel we stayed in ( Disney's Caribbean Beach) , the A/C shuts off & turns on automatically ( my 2nd pet peeve..) when it hits the room temp you set it at...then it's sooooo quiet for 5-10 minutes, then, BOOM, it turns on loud..during the quiet time, you can hear all the fire engines, police cars going by in this big city right in the downtown area..BTW, location was good if you want to be downtown..there was a complimentary breakfast on the 2nd floor, which was fair to "not bad", though my sister-in-law from Peru w/ hubby & daughter did not like the breakfast at all..there were 2 hot items: scrambled eggs ( very plain ) and sausage links, which were pretty good...further down the area were cereals, fruit , and some bagels/ muffins / toast stuff along with a waffle maker with a gal making them for you...I would've liked some hash browns with my eggs and perhaps something in the eggs ( like cheese, but I know some don't like that or cannot have)...coffee & a juice machine are in separate areas..Javier worked in the breakfast room and gave us places to visit & how to get there..he spoke Spanish which was very helpful for my SIL, who speaks very little English...Kuddos to Javier...everyone was very friendly in the breakfast room I will say that..

There is NO pool/ hot tub/ gym facilities at all here ( 3rd pet peeve..), which I thought was unusual for a Marriott hotel that charges $200-250 a night for a room...My SIL had a bigger room than us & we are Marriott Rewards Priority Club members ( and no bathtub)..there are LOTS of hotels downtown within a 2 block radius including several Marriott's and the Sheraton Downtown, which we stayed in last time, a much nicer hotel IMO, but it was too $$ this time for the dates...So, the Fairfield Inn & Suites is a decent place ( clean & new BTW) , but if you are looking for big rooms and a gym/ spa / lounge ( no bars or lounges BTW..) , try the bigger hotels in this downtown area...

Room Tip: If you don't want noise from the street, ask for a room AWAY from the main street ( Illinois Ave...

Thank you for taking the time to add to our online reputation with such a comprehensive overview of your stay with us. While we may not have all of the amenities of the various full service resorts that you have mentioned, I am happy that you did seem to enjoy your stay with us overall and that Javier was able to assist you.

I did want to clarify a few details that you pointed out so that the TripAdvisor community has all the correct information about our property. Our heating and cooling units do have 3 settings to better maximize your comfort - ON, OFF, and AUTO. Leaving it on the AUTO setting will cause the unit to turn on and off as the temperature in the room changes, however setting the unit to ON will simply keep that constant airflow as not to disturb you with the turning on and off. While we do not have a pool or hot tub here at our location, we do have a beautiful over-sized fitness center on the lower level that is open 24 hours.

Thank you again for taking the time to review our hotel. I very much appreciate you rating our service and cleanliness 5 stars as we pride ourselves on both aspects, and I do apologize that the brand standard amenities of the Fairfield brand did not compare to our full service counterparts.

Sincerely,
Matt Noonan, Front Desk Manager

Room was very nice. No wear or tear seen. We were on the top floor so it helped with street noise. Being across from a fire station and close to hospitals there is alot of siren noise. No problem sleeping though. Loved the included breakfast and location. Would stay again.
