Our group of five had dinner on May 16. Two had the herb roasted chicken, on had ribs, one had salmon oscar, the fifth had an appetizer. My herb chicken was close to being dry, and completely bland. The other diners had similar opinions, OK but nothing special. The chocolate mousse looked great, but frankly tasted every bit as good as grocery store boxed pasties.

Service was OK, tending toward inattentive. It mostly appeared that staff was working on automatic, without really engaging us.

Altogether, it wasn't a bad experience, but certainly was not one to repeat, given the large number of choices in the immediate neighborhood.

They don't take American Express also, if that matters.

We came for late afternoon coffee and pastries. Both were first class. Our fruit tart pastries had short bread crust and intense fruit flavor.

Equally wonderful is the ambience and staff. The space is sunny, inviting and decorated with rotating art works by very good local artists (for sale.) The staff is friendly and adds a lot to the experience. It's a plus to see many of the same faces on repeat visits.

Meals are also served. We have enjoyed their breakfast in the past. The dinner menu looked great. We look forward to coming back and trying it out!

Lincoln Square is one of those neighborhoods in Chicago that should not be overlooked when planning a trip to Chicago. Cafe Selmarie is a charming cafe with a distinctly European flavor in the heart of the funky, upscale neighborhood. The menu is varied and delicious including soups, salads, sandwiches and 6-8 main courses. But the real reason to go to Cafe Selmarie is for the delectable and varied pastries. Patrons are greeted with a large bakery shelf filled with delightful treats. Sacher torte, 3 layered chocolate mousse cake, tres leches cake, ganache cakes, fruit croustadas, German chocolate cake, croissants, strawberry tortes, delicate cookies and the list goes on. The feel is tres elegant yet so understated. The two pastries that we sampled were decadent and delicious! Cannot wait to go back to have brunch and maybe some sweets!

Whenever I am in Chicago, I stop by Selmarie. Located in the Lincoln Square area, it is one of those neighborhood gems. Part bakery and part restaurant, it offers spectacular cakes and pastries, wonderful salads, soups, and sandwiches, and a decent dinner menu. On my recent visit, I ordered a Chicken-Sausage chowder and a turkey club wrap. Both were wonderful, generous portions, and delicious. My dessert was a fruit tartlet. A wonderful finish for a delightful lunch. It is always a delight to taste the well-prepared food and desserts of Selmarie. The staff is cheerful and very friendly. A great place!

I am a local and a *long* time patron. Cafe Selmarie is one of the main reasons Lincoln Square is such a wonderful place - I would even argue that the fountain square would not be what it is without Selmarie . For many years Selmaire has been famous for their bakery and for their delightful outside on the square; it is a great pace to people-watch over lunch, pastry or a glass or wine or beer on a sunny afternoon. That said, Cafe Selmarie is also excellent for dinner. The menu selections are thoughtful, mostly locally sourced, and tasty. I have always found the service to be professional yet friendly. ( The weird little hats that were introduced a few years ago have GOT to go though.) Bottom line: go to Selmarie! It is a great place to visit in a fun neighborhood to explore.
