For our first meal in Chicago, it sure was overwhelming. There was no way we were going to have the same things we usually have back home, so we started looking around and were faced with parking issues, not expecting to find it so hard to park.

While trying to find somewhere nice, my wife's attention was caught by Greektown and especially by the Athena Greek Restaurant. And for our first meal, it was a home run.

Entering the restaurant, I did not understand why and how people were eating outside since it was freezing and we had kids who were tired and hungry and would not enjoy being seated outside. But while they were indeed sitting outside, it was a very nice covered outside patio. It was cold outside but it was a clear and sunny day which made it a real pleasure sitting in the patio.

The food was really tasty and copious. Our waiter was really attentive to our needs and offered us complimentary drinks to celebrate my birthday. The only regret was being too full to even try to have dessert. But it was definitely a good value for our money and would definitely return here.

I went to this restaurant because it was in close proximity to the hotel I was staying at, the Crowne Plaza. Our party of three was seated right away and given fresh bread and water. It all went downhill from there.
From the start, our waiter was rude to us. We ordered one appetizer and he walked away before we could even finish saying that we wanted another. The kolokithakia appetizer was very good however, and in fact was the highlight of our meal.
Our entrees were served promptly. I ordered the chicken kabob, which came with peppers and onions and a side of rice and potatoes. The chicken was very bland, but edible. The rice was covered in a sauce which is hard to describe, not very good but not terrible either. The potatoes were the absolute saltiest thing I have ever tasted in my entire life. They were horrible. Another member of our party ordered the veggie pita, which also came with rice. Instead of being a pita sandwich that could be picked up and eaten, it was more of an open faced sandwich. The vegetables were oddly sweet and overall the pita was unenjoyable.
The other member in our party ordered two appetizers for a meal, the spanakopita and the patzaria. The patzaria (beets in a vinaigrette with skordalia spread) was good, while the spanakopita should never have come out of the kitchen in the shape that it was in. The outside crust was burned to a crisp. We couldn't even say anything to our waiter because he never came back to our table until we were ready to go. When he finally came over he asked what was wrong with the spanakopita, as if it were not obvious. When we told him, he said something under his breath and walked away. Never apologized or anything. He did come back and say he was taking it off of the bill, but still no apology. We then watched him stand in the corner for ten minutes while we waited patiently for our check. We eventually got it after he walked by our table and we asked for it.
Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. The food was really not that great, and the service wasn't either. Our waiter was extremely rude and inhospitable. We should have tried one of the other Greek restaurants on Halsted Street.

Another odd thing- there was a huge projector screen in the dining room with an NBA game on. They also had Christmas trees with colored lights up at the end of February.

Whenever I come back to Chicago to visit family, it must include a visit to the Athena Greek Restaurant. Our waiter like always was very helpful and spent alot of quality time with our large group. From his food to wine recommendations they were all right on. What a wonderful time!

Uninspiring generic large Greek restaurant with unintuitive service. Nice glass enclosed new main dining room. Free parking.

It was some of the better Saganaki i have had, but they certainly cater to the norm sample platters of Greek Cuisine. Nice place to stop in and have wine and appetizers, but might recommend another for a twist on the Greek experience.
