“A good place to stay”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

I stayed here for just the one night at the start of a tour of the States. I arrived on a Saturday and the general area was quiet being the financial district. Once I got to the 40th floor where the hotel is located, it was so quiet I felt like I was the only one there. Peaceful yet ghostly. I got to my room and was impressed by the size and the view which is stunning especially when all the lights of the city are on. Facilities were adequate for the place and did the job. Breakfast the following morning was in a lounge just along the corridor and I found I wasn't alone after all. There's something about having breakfast with a view that covers half the city. Book this one if you like something different.

The Buckingham Athletic Club Hotel. At first this place seems strange - perched atop an office block. And the athletic club is on a different floor using a different elevator. Then you enter your room and get one of the best views of Chicago and the Lake. The athletic club pool opens at 5a.m. and with breakfast starting at 6:30 this is a top place to get over that mid-afternoon arrival of a transatlantic flight. Good sized room with a huge comfy bed. Apart from the pool and muscle-pounding jacuzzi (easily the best I've been in), you can play squash/racketball? and practice your golf swing. Plenty on offer for breakfast. The only negative was in trying to get hold of reception. It's 40 floors down and if no-one's by the phone you're a bit stuck. Fortunately our emergency was only a missing bottle opener.

Make sure you ask for a lake view. It's stunning.

Room Tip: Go for a lake view

Excellent hotel located on the 40th floor of Chicago Stock Exchange building. The location is perfect and most of the famous tourist spots are in the vicinity. It is well connected to the train service as well with station located right below the building. Lots of eating places are also located nearby. The building has heavy security as the 39 floors of the building house various top banks and investment companies. The staff is very polite and helpful. However reaching the rooms was a bit confusing for me on the first day atleast since one needs to change lift on the 39th floor. The breakfast is complimentary and is pretty decent. It is served on the 3rd Floor for which again change of lifts has to be taken care of.The free wifi works perfectly fine. The rooms offer a view of lake on one side and Sears Tower on the other side which is perfect. The price also reasonable considering the location and the spacious rooms. Overall worth staying and I met several guests who have been staying there year after year.

Room Tip: I prefer the rooms facing Sears (Willis) Tower

Couldn't fault it.
Desk staff were all friendly and helpful.
Athletic club facilities are excellent. Breakfast is spot on and a very welcoming start to your day.
The hotel is quiet and we slept amazingly well.
We had a room with a lake view and leaving the curtains open gives a lovely start to your day with the sun rise.
Very easy to get to from o'hare - blue line has a stop right by the building.
We stayed 7 nights and would happily stay again if we are ever back in chicago.
Being in the financial district does limit bars/restaurants nearby but it's not like it's difficult to get around downtown chicago.

Parking: Convenient, located underneath the hotel. Reasonable.

Check-in. We ran into several problems, because we were given the impression that the athletic club and the pool were separate from each other and that our daughter would be able to swim. NOT THE CASE!!! We were SO disappointed. And we did not receive any help from the staff - they kept putting us off, saying that we would be called. We were there for 3 days and NO ONE contacted us about working out some arrangement for our daughter to swim.

Room - 40th floor view is great. Room seemed outdated, light wasn't working in one of the lamps. They had to bring up a fridge, since there isn't one normally in the room.

Breakfast - Probably the most decent part of the trip. Repetitive but hot. The woman who works the breakfast part was PHENOMENAL with our daughter. She provided a sheet of stickers and a picture for her each day. SO NICE OF HER!

We only spent one night here and would have really liked to stay two. Yes, it's kind of a funny set up with parking and finding breakfast, but the view from our large room was wonderful, overlooking the lake. It probably could use some sprucing up in the rooms but nothing terrible. Breakfast was good, not a huge selection but still nice. We did not get to use the athletic facilities or the dinner restaurant but wished we could have. It all looked good.

Sure, the furniture is stodgy and scuffed but its right in the heart of the financial district, within walking distance of the Lake and many attractions and the price is right. I have to say, try to get there early to get a suite, since the "regular" rooms are really worn out and not as spacious.
The marble tabletops are stained and generally have been abused and not maintained well. They look dirty. The furniture is the sort of fussy traditional stuff that shows every speck of dust. The beds are comfy tho and the shower is good -surprising since its on the 40th floor!

Overall its quiet except for random housekeepers loudly bantering about their sexcapades.
The "L" assures you that you're in Chicago and sometimes a siren can be heard, but you are essentially above it all up there. At least no loud children in the halls and you dont have anyone above you. The view of Lake Michigan at dawn is stunning.

The front desk for the hotel is easier to find since a recent remodel. You just go in the doors marked 440 S. LaSalle and the desk is in plain sight. Elevators take you up thru the office floors to the 39th floor, at which time you get off and transfer to the elevator taking you to the 40th floor which houses the hotel. Very private and secure.

A Deli is within the building complex and other fast food shops, including Subway and Skrines for burgers are nearby. Many restaurants in the area close at around 3pm since they cater to mostly the business crowd but the Metra is right outside the door for other places. Dont bother with Everest Restaurant in the building - immensely overhyped.
Nice gym in the building but it closes at 9pm.
Staff is friendly and helpful. They do charge a $75 incidental fee per day on checkin which is refunded if nothing is used or damaged I suppose. Its not the Ritz but its serviceable and secure and did I say "great views"?

Room Tip: Try to get a suite for best views and spaciousness.
