I spent three nights at Ray's Bucktown B&B recently while attending an academic conference in Chicago. What a great choice!
First, the location -- perfect for me since it's a pleasant walk from the train coming in from O'Hare. The neighbourhood is quiet and attractive -- lots of big trees and older homes. There are lots of interesting restaurants in the neighbourhood -- unfortunately I was only there long enough to try one Cuban and one Mexican example, both good and both recommended in the extensive guide to the neighbourhood Ray provides in the guest rooms.
Second, the place -- I loved it. I stayed in the Skylight Room. The bed was comfortable, the huge deep bathtub was a real treat, and the extras in the room were intriguing and fun. (I don't play chess, so the bookcase full of chess books was wasted on me... but I did enjoy the etch-a-sketch!) The living room, which sometimes doubles as a photo studio, was a lovely place to sit and chat with a cat. The kitchen's state-of-the art, and like all good kitchens a place where it's just really nice to hang out. The breakfast was excellent all three days, with lots of choices including omelets, stuffed French toast and an array of other options.
The house is clean from top to bottom, and there are many extras not usualy available at a B&B. (Coffee and tea any time... two friendly cats... WiFi throughout and even better a computer with internet access 24-7 so I didn't have to lug my laptop to Chicago...)
And finally, the people. Both Ray (the owner) and Paige (the manager) are welcoming, friendly people, attuned to what guests might need. I enjoyed my conversations with both of them, and left feeling like I had spent time with interesting friends. What a great place!
Now, if they could just do something about the snow in Chicago in April!
