What happened to this Cathedral?? It is so modern that it hurts, although it is beautiful still. My biggest irritation is that you cannot even tell where the tabernacle is, and when you find it, you are amazed by how hideous it is. It is an orb that's part of a bigger sculpture. I'm seen pictures before the renovation and it was much more beautiful.

My wife and I have been to the Holy Name Cathedral a few times. It one of the largest and most impressive holy places in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Holy Name Cathedral is not only the mother church of the region, but also the focal point of an active Roman Catholic community in the heart of the city.

This is a very old church with lots of history.

The 1854 structure was a huge church, with a spire reaching 245 feet into the sky. It opened on Christmas Day, 1854 and five years later it was named the diocesan cathedral. The glory was short-lived, though. The cathedral was one of hundreds of buildings destroyed in the Chicago Fire.

Holy Name Cathedral replaced the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name, both destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire in October 1871. The cathedral was finally dedicated on November 21, 1875.

Went to 5:15pm Saturday Vigil mass here, on a whim. Absolutely stunning church. Unique design and very impressive. Must see in my opinion.

Home parish for Cardinal George. Always a nice service and professional-level music. Check out the red hats of former cardinals above the Altar.

We walk by here daily and always delight in the building...rehabbed a few years back and a nice example of cut stone. Inside is gorgeous as well, with awesome stained glass and a serenity that is hard to find in the city. Holy Name is the site of services for many well-known Chicagoans, including Harry Caray and Ron Santo. You do not need to go to Europe to experience marvelous cathedrals!
