Owner description: MacArthur's offices are located in the historic and beautiful Marquette Building, a Chicago landmark and one of the city's first skyscrapers. The building is a classic example of Chicago-style architecture. Designed and built by Holabird & Roche in 1895, it was named for the French Jesuit missionary and explorer Jacques Marquette. In 1975, Banker's Life and Casualty Company, owned by John D. MacArthur, acquired the Marquette Building, and in 1976 it was named a National Historic Landmark. After his death in 1978, the building became the headquarters for the Foundation which bears his name. In 2001, MacArthur undertook an extensive restoration of the building, working closely with preservation specialists to return the interior and exterior to its original splendor. There is a free exhibit in the building's arcade, just west of the lobby, at 140 South Dearborn Street. Interactive kiosks detail the building's design, history, and renovation. The exhibit is free and open to the public from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. The Chicago Architecture Foundation provides scheduled tours of the building.

“Must-see in Chicago. Gorgeous mosaics.”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

This is one of my favorite little-known Chicago buildings. The lobby is terrific - with the 360-degree historic mosaics and busts above the elevators. It's worth a quick ten-minute visit.

“For Amazing Mosaics,Stop by the Lobby”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

Discovered the Marquette Building in Frommer's Chicago Day by Day guidebook. Completed in 1895, it was one of Chicago’s first commercial skyscrapers.

Louis Comfort Tiffany and J.A. Holzer created the stunning mosaics that grace the Marquette Building’s lobby. The rich artwork celebrates Chicago’s early history, inhabitants, and explorers. Louis Tiffany's career launched when he displayed his chapel mosaics at the 1893 World’s Fair. His works amazed audiences and launched an impressive array of commissions which can be found throughout Chicago buildings. There is an exhibit explaining the construction just behind the lobby entrance.

Decades later, the Marquette Building’s future was uncertain, as Chicago razed historic buildings in favor of modernization. In 1975, the Marquette Building gained landmark status. Today, the building is a monument to Chicago’s development and architectural history.

“Great Chicago architectural landmark”
Reviewed 14 March 2013

If you haven't already, take one of the Chicago Architectural Foundation tours of buildings in the loop to learn more about the importance of this building. Otherwise, you can stop in to admire the beautiful mosaics in the lobby and see a nice exhibit about the building and its beautiful recent restoration in the back of the lobby.
