Hello, my name is Christine and I am a chocoholic. Strike that, make that a Vosges-aholic because once you sample Vosges' Haut-Chocolat, there is no going back. Located on the 2nd floor in the Shops at North Bridge on Michigan Avenue, the store front is charmingly eclectic and draws you in with its shiny silver fixtures and purple walls. The friendly help behind the display case welcome you with a big, knowing smile and invite you to explore. This is where the fun begins as you discover creatively kooky chocolate concoctions like... chocolate and BACON?! Wait, did that truffle description say it had wasabi? Absinthe, anise, and fennel? In a truffle?? As your mind tries to wrap itself around these... interesting truffle and candy bar combinations, you may be asked if you want to sample something. Say yes. For as strange as these combinations sound, someone knew exactly what she was doing and these morsels are glorious. It takes time to unlock and discern the complex flavors as it melts on your tongue. And you feel a little adventurous. And a little sophisticated. And just a little naughty (as you walk out the door with a bag full of decadence). I can not recommend enough making the time to make the trip to Vosges. And if you are a little more timid in your tastes and would prefer to wade in to the kiddie pool first, I highly recommend the Barcelona Bar - with the perfect balance of chocolate, grey sea salt, and hickory smoked almonds or try the slightly more exotic Cherry Rooibos bar made with African Rooibos tea, Michigan cherries, hibiscus, and vanilla. The Tibetan Goji Berry bar is wonderfully accessible as well. Warning: This stuff is pricey - but the high quality, complex flavors, and unique conversation starter make it worth it. By the way, this makes a great gift for the friends and colleagues at home. Much better than a key chain. I promise.
