This hotel is in a great location - right across from a beautiful park. The rooms are comfortable with huge windows overlooking the park and Lake Michigan. The staff are very friendly. Only downside was that it cost 50 dollars a day to park your car.

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking the park and Lake Michigan

My wife and I stayed at the Essex for 2 nights during May 2014.
The staff are friendly and efficient, and it is extremely well located.
The main problem is that it seems a bit tired. The air conditioning is so old that it comes with an apology in every room!
Only one lift was working in the two days we spent here, but this time without an apology notice.
Probably one to avoid.

My daughter and I had a two-room suite: bedroom with two double beds, sitting room with pull-out sofa. This was perfect for us, since I could get up early, close the door and not worry about disturbing my daughter. The view was spectacular. I did hear the elevator one night, and some loud voices in the middle of the night just once. We had lunch once and dinner twice at the hotel, and we found the food interesting, very good and reasonably priced. The location was perfect for us, across from Grant Park and not far from the Art Institute. The shuttle driver was terrific; he gave us his cell phone number so he could pick us up. The price was much more reasonable than other hotels in the Loop. I highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: There is only one suite per floor, so it is not possible to have a room away from the elevator. It...

Stayed here for 5 nights. Would have liked to have been a bit nearer town. Next door to Hilton, which was useful for Kitty O'Hara's bar and shops. Room clean, everything you need, including a fridge (always useful). Staff very friendly and helpful. Cashpoint in reception useful and courtesy bus very useful taking you into town. Driver very friendly and helpful, would drop you off anywhere you wanted (within reason of course!).

Only tried restaurant once, were we had a drink, not very friendly, so didn't go back.

I'm writing this review as I'm currently checked in. Room is decent for the price. The hallways are nice and cool but the guest bedrooms are extremely hot and humid.Front desk said open a window. Need to work on the a/c.

I booked using hotwire and when I checked in I was given a smoking room even though I had called ahead and asked them for a non-smoking room. Had to go back to the reception and ask them for a change. They did change to a non-smoking room. So if you book using hotwire you are more than likely to get a smoking room. The room was not bad at all. The bathrooms are tiny may be slightly bigger than the ones on an airplane. The wireless internet was free and had no issues connecting my devices. On the whole not a bad stay for the price.

Room Tip: Call ahead and make sure you have a non-smoking room if that is what you prefer

We stayed in this hotel for two nights at the beginning of a Route 66 road trip and when booking we had been looking for something with a good location and for a certain budget. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived as we had paid a relatively cheap price compared to the other hotels on offer in the same area.

The only real thing that let it down was that the floor to ceiling windows that had been put in originally opened! Luckily they had been screwed shut so you couldn't open them. This was essential as we were on the 9th floor! There was however some duck tape around the joins to stop the draft coming in. I didn't get too close anyway as I'm not a fan of heights and I'm sure it was perfectly safe but the appearance wasn't.

The room itself was a nice size with two double beds and a bath with shower above. We didn't have chance to use the pool as we were out most of the time we were there exploring the local area.

We ran into the maid one of the days who apologised that she was late cleaning the room. She was very friendly and personable. This wasn't a problem for us and we went to the bar to have a drink. At the bar we had a nice chat with the barman who was French and also met a Welsh man who was also staying at the hotel. We had a nice couple of hours with some drinks and fries for a bit of chill out time whilst the maid was cleaning the room.

The location is good and most things are within walking distance. We caught a basketball game whilst we were there, at the United Center. We got a taxi there as we weren't sure of the distance and we were right to do it as it was quite a way in the end.

The hotel isn't far from Lake Michigan and was only a short walk away from Millennium Park and "the bean".

Overall a good hotel to stay in for a couple of nights which was clean and in a good location.
