“Great location”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

We stayed in this hotel for 4 nights. From the O'Hare airport it takes around 1 hour to get to the hotel (45 minutes by Blue Line train + 15 minutes walk from La Salle station). Hotel has a great location on Michigan Avenue just a short distance from Buckingham Memorial Fountain, Art Institute of Chicago, Millenium park, etc. You can go for shopping on State Street, it takes just about 10 minutes by foot. Hotel Essex Inn offers very comfortable accommodation, with spacious room and bathroom (shower / bath tub and toillet). Unique is a swimming pool with an outdoor terrace where you can relax and watch the daily traffic on Michigan Avenue. It is also possible to use the gym. On each floor are vending machines with good choice of soft drinks. On the 4th floor, in the corridor leading to the swimming pool, is installed ice maker machine. For breakfast you can sit in the Bistro Brasserie LM beside hotel reception, but you can also walk about 5 minutes south along Michigan Avenue to Yolk restaurant, where you can get wider choice of breakfast menu for lower price than in Brasserie LM. We were completely satisfied with our stay in the hotel Essex Inn.

We stayed here the last weekend in December. The hotel is 60ish in style, but met my criteria of reasonably clean and comfortable. We never look for a luxury room
as we always come to Chicago to explore our time in the city.

Room Tip: Did not use the spa.

We visited this hotel on a family trip based on trip advisor advice. It was right. We made it cheaper by booking 4 into 1 room. It was much cheaper, but cosy. We had 3 places across the country to visit. The reception staff were friendly and helpful with efficientcheck in / out. The bathroom was small, but how much time do you spend in the bathroom? The rest of the room was a little tired but clean, functional and really comfortable. It is quite close to the train station, and only cost 5 dollars each for the one way transfer. A 10 minute walk from Jackson station. There were plenty of people on the train giving good advice about the best way to get around and sights to see. The Essex is in a good location, on the hop on hop tour circuit (30 seconds from the main entrance). It took about 20 minutes to walk to the edge of the city, but a lovely walk along grant Park, past Buckingham fountain to the bean and central transport. All the way along looking at the fantastic sky line! Chicago was a great place to visit. Good for us!

This hotel is in a great location - right across from a beautiful park. The rooms are comfortable with huge windows overlooking the park and Lake Michigan. The staff are very friendly. Only downside was that it cost 50 dollars a day to park your car.

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking the park and Lake Michigan

My wife and I stayed at the Essex for 2 nights during May 2014.
The staff are friendly and efficient, and it is extremely well located.
The main problem is that it seems a bit tired. The air conditioning is so old that it comes with an apology in every room!
Only one lift was working in the two days we spent here, but this time without an apology notice.
Probably one to avoid.

My daughter and I had a two-room suite: bedroom with two double beds, sitting room with pull-out sofa. This was perfect for us, since I could get up early, close the door and not worry about disturbing my daughter. The view was spectacular. I did hear the elevator one night, and some loud voices in the middle of the night just once. We had lunch once and dinner twice at the hotel, and we found the food interesting, very good and reasonably priced. The location was perfect for us, across from Grant Park and not far from the Art Institute. The shuttle driver was terrific; he gave us his cell phone number so he could pick us up. The price was much more reasonable than other hotels in the Loop. I highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: There is only one suite per floor, so it is not possible to have a room away from the elevator. It...

Stayed here for 5 nights. Would have liked to have been a bit nearer town. Next door to Hilton, which was useful for Kitty O'Hara's bar and shops. Room clean, everything you need, including a fridge (always useful). Staff very friendly and helpful. Cashpoint in reception useful and courtesy bus very useful taking you into town. Driver very friendly and helpful, would drop you off anywhere you wanted (within reason of course!).

Only tried restaurant once, were we had a drink, not very friendly, so didn't go back.
