“Best service in Chicagoland!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2014 via mobile

The Essex Inn at 800 S Michigan Ave in Chicago has the most helpful and the friendliest staff! My son and I just returned from a three night stay and couldn't be happier that we chose this hotel. This hotel is in a prime location. Close to the Art Institute, Field Museum, Adler Planetarium, Millenium Park. It's across the street from Grant Park. The rooms are clean and the entire staff is helpful with any questions on what to do, how to get where you want to go, and the concierge can set you up with discount tickets and tours. The hotel also has an indoor rooftop pool, an exercise room, a sauna, and two rooftop decks. The on site restaurant , Brassiere, has fantastic cheeseburgers and seasoned fries. The waitstaff at the restaurant was also great. If and when I go back to Chicago would I stay at this hotel again? Absolutely!

First trip to Chicago and stayed here for 4 nights. The location of the hotel is relatively good as most landmarks and points of interest are within walking distance of the hotel. The shopping district and the Magnificent Mile is a good 20-30min walk from the hotel as is the Navy Pier.

The hotel is only a 10min walk from La Salle station on the Blue Line if taking the L train from O'hare.

Our room was clean but got really noisy as our room was next to the service elevator and vending machines. Noise from the street also filters into the room and the a/c unit is extremely noisy. Shower stall was too small for me, and I'm only 5'9". Other than that, the room was clean and adequate and included a fridge and safe which we found convenient. We also stayed during Blues Fest and Spring Awakening which meant for a couple sleepless nights as Michigan Ave. was busy all throughout the night and the rooms aren't very well sheltered from the noise. We did appreciate the hotel taking steps to ensure the safety and security of its guests including issuing wristbands to hotel guests only.

The hotel has a free shuttle to all of downtown Chicago's main points of interest. Leaves almost every hour but can fill up fast on busy weekends as the van only fits 15, but the driver seemed to always try to get everyone accommodated. All staff we encountered were friendly and helpful.

Fitness Center is clean and well equipped, the pool wasn't as large as the pictures make it out to seem, but still a good size.

This hotel is a great value if you can get it at a decent price.

We were very happy with our experience in this hotel. The rate was reasonable, and it was in an excellent location. We were right across from Grant Park. We were in walking distance of the Art Museum. We also walked to several other attractions, i.e. Willis Tower, Millennium Park, the Bean. The room was average size, and very clean. We liked the large windows. We liked the separate sink area from the bathroom, so one could shower and someone else could be at the sink. The hotel staff was very friendly. We took the shuttle to 2 locations, but be aware that they drop you off, but won't pick you up again. There is a schedule in the lobby for when drop offs occur. We took the shuttle to Navy Pier and then were able to take a city bus back and that got us to within a block of the hotel. The shuttle driver was very helpful in telling us what bus we could take back. We also took the shuttle to the Shedd's Aquarium, and from there we walked back to the hotel, which was about a mile, but that did not bother us. We loved the pool. It is a nice as the pictures. Large size for a hotel. The sauna was also large and refreshing. Absolutely loved the attached roof top terrace. I sat out there for about an hour on a sunny day, and it was wonderful. We would definitely stay again if we are in Chicago in the future!

We spent 4 nights here as part of a USA trip for a special birthday and anniversary- our first time in Chicago.
The hotels location is perfect and opposite extensive parkland. We requested a low floor and were on floor 5, no special view but spent so little time in the room, that didn't matter. The staff on arrival were helpful and friendly. Our room had a giant bed, desk, drawers , clothes hanging area and separate basin area to the shower and toilet. Everything was clean and kept so every day. There was a coffee maker, safe and fridge too. We took a travel kettle as, being Brits, we like a fair few cups of tea while away!
The hotel provides a limited shuttle to points of interest up and down town but no rides back. We walked a great deal but it was never too far to get back to the hotel. It is especially convenient for the Shedd aquarium ( amazing) , the museums and the art institute. The public parks which line the lake are great for strolls, people watching and fresh air away from the skyscrapers. You can hire bikes or Segway machines to get around too. The Essex is well situated for easy access to all of this.
We used the hotel pool a few times and it was refreshing after a hot day in the city. We were always in there alone which was also welcome! Towels etc are readily available. There is also a small rooftop garden for sunbathing . The hotel stored our luggage on the final day and we relaxed there in the afternoon while waiting for our train time.
The hotel was also very quiet, we never heard anyone either in the corridors or in neighbouring rooms. The aircon was efficient and the lifts swift.
In terms of entertainment, Buddy Guys Legends Blues club is literally round the corner- it cost £10 cover charge and we arrived early to eat there too- Southern food being the speciality. the band were brilliant- Cash Box Kings - Buddy was in the club and joined them for a few numbers- a real treat to see one of last remaining older blues guys.We also booked and saw The Blue Man Group -very entertaining but this was in a theatre some way away. The doorman at the hotel was very helpful and advised us how to get back easily by the "L" overground metro system. The river architecture tour was also extremely informative and he sorted out our tickets easily for that too. The famous shopping street is very expensive stores apart from Maceys, walk over 2 blocks and the shops are more individual, interesting and include some French style squares with pavement cafes etc - far more character.
The hotel has a brasserie as part of the building and we breakfasted and had lunch there once. Both very nice and its quite upmarket , with power breakfasts occurring all around us.

My only reservation about the whole stay was that we had to experience an embarrassing encounter as we waited to settle our bill. A member of the brasserie staff was trying to explain a problem she had with a room service order to the very officious young woman on reception. That woman was extremely offensive in her attitude and words to the restaurant member of staff . She was rude, personally insulting, unhelpful, patronising and belittling. I wanted to hit her so how the victim must have felt I cannot imagine! This was totally unprofessional behaviour and , at the very least, the conversation should have been conducted away from the main reception area and in private. Some further staff training needed maybe?
Aside form that one gripe, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and would recommend it as an affordable stay with the bonus of a pool.

Room Tip: If a view is important to you, request rooms at the front.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and its an excellent location for seeing the city. The staff are very helpful and pleasant. The hotel itself is in need of some TLC. Large bedrooms and bathrooms with bath and shower. We were more thsn happy. Although you cant completely turn off air con. Great sun terrace and pool. Opposite Grant Park so beautiful views of the park. If you wish you can walk straight to the shopping magnificent mile. The harbour and lake are not far either. We walked to North Pier and on to the Hancock Tower. I recommend this hotel.

Jael and Rico took care of everything for my coworkers and myself when setting up reservations and also when we arrived to make us feel at home. Bonus was that it was Wednesday night which means fireworks at Navy Pier. Great View!

Room Tip: 1402 great view of lake

While my room was clean, it was small, with a tiny bathroom sink and very industrial type fixtures, not very luxurious.

I ran into an issue with the front desk. Upon checking into my room, I attempted to connect via their in-room wi-fi. Using my last name and room number, I was repeatedly denied access for reasons unknown. Finally, I contacted the ISP listed on the desk card. After another 10-15 minutes, I was told that my login failed repeatedly because the front desk had misspelled my last name. Funny, when they took my credit card (with my name properly spelled) nothing prompted them to correct the spelling. What an inconvenience,
