The staff at the Essex was first class all the way. They supplied me with an upgrade stay with my significant other for a minimum cost. Their security staff immediately dealt with a rude, obnoxious party that was keeping guests up at 4 am in the morning. The hotel is a long walk from the Magnificent Mile, but the hotel offers a free shuttle to the Mile, Navy Pier, and other Chicago landmarks daily. A free pool and free internet are always welcome as well. I would stay away from room service as cost is high, and food not that good. Quality eateries for breakfast, lunch, and dinner can easily be found within blocks. Rooms will be small, but they will be clean. You are not going to get 5 star accommodations at the Essex, but they never claim that you will. They are exactly who they say they are, which is refreshing with hotels, and they do not have the snobbery found in other hotels city wide. The rooms do not have a thermostat due to it being an older building, so be prepared to adjust to the hot and cold of a room on the fly.

Room Tip: Shuttles leave every hour to take you downtown, plan your day around them. Rooms do not have a ther...

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights and the staff were wonderful. So close to many restaurants and Grant Park. You could walk around very safely in the area.
Parking was very expensive at $59 per night for a motorcycle, I found that quite shocking.
The room was very pleasant with a side view of the lake, we were in 11th floor.
A/C wasn't very good.

Room Tip: Ask at reception what they would want themselves Don't expect a very cool room at night, AC doe...

This hotel was in great location, short walk to the Museum Campus, Grant Park, Millenium Park and Buckingham Fountain. From our room (1109) you could see the Field Museum and the Lake. The Hilton is just crossing the street. The decor is old fashioned but the room was nice. The room housekeeping could be better. Sometimes the took our towels and didn't replaced them. The body wash that they give you is very little and with a family of four it would not last long enough and some days they didn't left more in the room. The staff was respectful. I didn't go to the pool but my husband told me it looked good. Free Wi-Fi. They have a very close bus stop in case, as we did, you want to take the bus. 10 - 15 mins walk to walgreens and Target in case you need something. In the same street, the Famous Pizzeria Lou Malnati. Also , just blocks away, Yolk restaurant is a good place to go to get a good breakfast at a good price.

Room Tip: Our room was very good 1109

Although in a good location, the hotel is a little tired. Our room was clean, but very dated. The air conditioning unit was also on its last legs and although it sounded like a fleet of Lancaster bombers it was barely working.
Additionally we were told that we would have free parking via Virgin but when we checked in the Valet guys wanted paying, when we queried this with the receptionist she allayed our fears and told us it was part of the package.
Imagine our disappointment at check put when we we represented with a £150 bill for parking.. The Manager claimed that the free parking was part of an old arrangement with virgin...whilst we will be picking this up directly the attitude of the hotel on this matter was unacceptable... Rude in fact. Not really recommended....

Stayed here for 3 nights with young children. We had a great stay and would come back here any time we wanted to visit the area. The pool was nice and large albeit a bit cold. The rooms were comfortable and large. The staff was very helpful. The in and out car service was first rate. Not sure why the hotel still has one smoking floor but it's not really an issue if you don't smoke. Just unusual these days.

I gave this hotel an "average" rating because it is average in comparison of it's competitors! It's not a newer hotel, it's not constantly updating it's decor, it's not going to make you feel like your in a castle of luxury when you walk in your room! But what it is, is a great friendly staff, CLEAN rooms, NICE NEWER COMFY PILLOW TOP beds, GREAT shower pressure, nice big TVs in the rooms, cold mini fridge for drinks, FREE WIFI that we streamed Netflix movies for our kiddies just fine on tablets and the IPad, a FREE hotel shuttle to Sheds Aquarium, Navy Pier, and the John Hancock building! We stayed for 3 days and we were able to check in early no problems, the room was cleaned everyday and stocked with towels & toiletries. The pool was great for our kiddies, it's heated and they even have some pool toys for them to play with along with a life guard. The fitness room had newer machines and was very clean. The location is right across the street from the beautiful Grant Park and to be honest a great walk to the Navy Pier if you are up for it! I would suggest this hotel to any family that wants a reasonable priced hotel with the basics, which is all you really need when you spend all day enjoying the city and just need a comfortable nights sleep to get you to the next day! If you want to have miscellaneous luxuries with a big charge per night this is not your hotel. If you want clean, comfort, nice staff, and some free perks for traveling with kids this is your hotel! We will visit again!
