“Good Visit”
Reviewed 17 August 2012

We stayed one night to visit the Instiute of Art in Chicago. It was a nice stay. The rooms seemed pretty clean. I was dissappointed with the view. They asked if we wanted to upgrade, and I wish we had. We had a view of the train. I wish they would have said that it was a view of the train. Although it was busy, the place was not full since it was February.

We ate breakfast downstairs, and the food was great. I ate the Eggs Benidict but the next day I was sick. Most likely due to the holidaise sauce which I think I am allergic. Oh well. It was wonderful with the savory bread pudding.

Room Tip: Have them explain the view you are missing. You may not want to listen to the train.

Many of the rooms in the historic Chicago Hilton have been renovated and feel stylishly modern. Some guests enjoy the modern decor while others are attached to the luxurious furnishings found in the more traditional suites. Among the amenities on the lobby-level floor, there's a well-stocked and convenient shop with both ready-to-eat and packaged items. The Executive Lounge is a comfortable retreat for guests with rooms on the Executive Floor or Hilton Honors Diamond members; it has a lovely view of the lake and park. Both the late afternoon hot snack buffet and morning continental breakfast have tempting offerings. This hotel is just a few blocks south of the Art Institute. It is also convenient to The Loop for those who enjoy walking in a city or short taxi rides. On a recent visit, we enjoyed walking to the Goodman Theatre then opted for a brisk taxi ride through deserted streets when our play concluded near midnight.

We were at the Hilton Chicago for Leaky Con (my daughter had me take her). The hotel was full up with young adults and their families. I suspect this was not their typical conference and you could tell the crowd was a bit larger than expected from the staff.

The property is beautiful, close to the parks, walking distance to a variety of off property dining and very close to the architectural tour office for the community. Great building!

I must say to the T everyone of the Hilton's staff was professional, polite, helpful and cheerful. The property was kept clean and the executive club staff was great in keeping the club comfortable with the crowds. I have been at properties where much less in crowds created much more visible stress on the staff.

I look forward to my next stay at this property.

Room Tip: Views towards the lake/parks are preferred

checked in on a Friday, and checked out on Saturday, but made the most of it. I actually got lucky, making the res barely 24 hours before checkin. Stayed in a double on the exec floor with my children. Had the package that included parking as well. Pulled staright into self parking off Balbo which borders the hotel to the North. Walked to checkin, and waited about two minutes, and we were checked in. Glad I remembered to bring the parking ticket in for validation, for in and out ease.
The room: 2 twin beds, plenty of closet and drawer space. A nice sized tv, and a large bathroom with the nice thicker grade towels. We looked across to another part of the hotel from our window, but turn your head a little and there was part of the Chicago skyline. Took a few pictures of the Willis( always Sears tower to me) tower and surrounding buildings, just lovely.
The facilities: As we checked in in the middle of Leaky Con, a Harry Potter expo type event, I expected mayhem. In truth, hundreds of folks dressed as witches and wizards, but zero problems. Everyone was in a good mood. We hit the exec lounge after checkin, and had some popcorn and sodas, before heading to the indoor pool. It was just off the workout facility on the eighth floor. Clean, well kept, with an outdoor patio that was just lovely with the nice weather. I saw them restocking those nice fluffy towels at least twice in the hour plus that we were there.
Dining: The kids wanted shephards pie at Kitty O'sheas for dinner right in the hotel. After a failed attempt to get into Lou Malnati's ( my favorite Chicago pizza) we came back to the hotel, and did in fact sit right down at Kittys. It's pub grub, but that shephards pie, and some fish and chips hit the spot.
Took a nice stroll all over the hotel to check out the Harry potter happenings, then back to the exec lounge for some nice tea and fresh baked cookies. From the lounge you can get a nice view of the Shedd aquarium, and the Adler Planetarium, both excellent places to visit when visiting Chicago.
Had a nice sleep, no noises or issues with A/C. Wakeup call was right on time.
Back to the exec lounge for a great continental breakfast, with hardboiled eggs, fresh cut melons, muffins, fresh breads and bagels for toasting. pastries, cereals and milk, lots of fresh juices, coffee tea etc.
Did the express checkout, left the keys in the room, and went right to the car, and we were off for more Chicago adventures.
There are a ton of hotels in Chicago, but if your business or plans take you south of the Chicago river you could do alot worse than the Hilton. Easy access to LSD, expressways, museum campus, Grant Park, Buckingham Fountain, Navy Pier etc.

This hotel was way too crowded and understaffed. It was a major hassle to check in. The lobby was packed with people waiting for rooms to be available, the line to check in was always at least 20 people, and they never called us (as promised) to say our room was ready. We kept having to get back in line and try to talk to the front desk staff (they were unhappy and overworked). The most infuriating thing about this whole process is that we had booked a room on the executive floor and it seems we could have checked in upstairs (Floor 24, no key needed to access the elevator) but no one mentioned this - they just kept saying no rooms were ready. It was honestly the craziest hotel scene I have ever witnessed.

Room was very small, not updated, faced the back of the hotel, train noises all night, no extra blankets (call to housekeeping went unanswered; customer service said hotel was out of blankets), very dark, etc.

Executive floor amenities consisted of one computer and printer, bare bones continental breakfast, and a two hot appetizers each night. No other snacks or desserts. Honor bar required you find the attendant, order your wine or beer, and then they go in the back room and get it for you. The breakfast was completely full each morning with lines to get food. Seems like there is no limit to the number of "executive floor" rooms they sell. There is a Starbuck next door and a Caribou Coffee right out back. Trader Joe's down the street. Skip the Executive Floor and you'll have no problem getting quick meals and snacks in this area.

Really disappointing experience.

Room Tip: Don't book an executive level room - not worth the extra money.

The grand dame of Michigan Avenue is still an impressive place, with atmospherically high ceilings and copious amounts of marble. The view from our room was no less than stunning.Out of the three large windows we saw the great sweep of green parkland and Lake Michigan as well as a few majestic museums.

What a 85 year legacy this hotel has and tries to maximize. Understand that with over 1,500 rooms problems might occur but the Hilton could be so much better.
#1. Maybe the Front Desk clerks could smile.
#2. When you know 3,000 people are checking into 1,500 rooms and another 2,000 will be on the property, maybe managers could staff the hotel properly. A severe shortage of uniformed personnel was apparent.
#3. A book needs to be placed into rooms for these weekends when family groups are in describing behavior expected of ladies and gentlemen. Kinda funny all the crazy Harry Potter kids were the nicest you could imagine. But the parents and little kids were merely rude or not trained. Simple things like allowing elevators to empty, not running in halls and not yelling across a public hallway are pretty simple but maybe an instruction guide is needed.

That being said our experience was very good. Check in to check out was good and gracious.

Over $200 a night for a weekend but it is Chicago on the lakefront.

There are LOTS of nicks, dents and scratches that should not be present in a world-class hotel
