We stayed at this hotel reluctantly after finding out we messed up the reservation on our original choice. We did not want to pay $300 for a hotel near Grant Park for a half marathon, so we checked other reviews and rolled the dice. This place was not at all luxurious; though it appeared to be at one time. People just need to manage their expectations better. If you want prime location during peak weekends and holidays, this is the best you are going to get for under $200.

Here are the ups and downs:

Pros:
- The room was clean and the bed was comfortable, though maybe a little hard for my liking
- The location was unbeatable. We walked from Amtrak to this hotel and from the hotel to Grant Park, loop shopping, dining, McCormick Place, etc
- Price was good for location

Cons:
- It is old and need of some serious renovations to be back to it's former glory
- The low price attracts those who are looking for a good time. Expect beer cans all over the place in the morning and maybe some drunken load people in the halls at 3 AM.

I probably will not stay again because I generally like experience when visiting Chicago, but a price sensitive person will be fine if they do not expect too much.

Location may be great though but terrible experience. Concierge not friendly, very poor customer service! Worse was around 12 midnight while all of us were sleeping, a man with a very loud voice and walkie talkie opened our door - good thing there was a chain to the door and I'm not a light sleeper - really shabby door as well-he was very Loud and didn't even bother to apologize for his Mistake - probably one of the security guys - he was yelling like "oh I should have opened room blah blah blah and not this room" and left. No apologies from management too! Terrible stay! What if that wasn't security- these shabby doors can be opened by anyone???? PLEASE DO NOT STAY at this hotel!!!! Oh btw the shower took forever to get hot water! you get what you pay for!

The location is FANTASTIC! The rooms, beds, bathroom and AC unit leave a lot to be desired. Outdated wallpaper and curtains (and by outdated, I mean by 50+ years!). Bedding was old, mattress stained, paint peeling, and the furniture was awful (I've seen better at yard sales and Ollies). I was glad we were only there for 1 night (came in the evening by train and left the next afternoon by plane). Bellhops were very nice and stored luggage after check out while we roamed the riverfront for awhile. Front desk was friendly. Lobby area was gorgeous (too bad that's not where the guests sleep!). If you just need a reasonable price for an overnight and want to be right by the lake, then I recommend. Otherwise, the Wyndham Grand Riverfront (where we stayed on the front end of our trip) is MUCH nicer!!

Great location just next to Buckingham Fountain. The hotel needs major remodeling but its still a good hotel. With remodeling it could be the best hotel in Chicago and could probably charge twice what it charges. The staff is excellent. We walked everywhere from the hotel. We took the Blue line train from o'hare and walked only a few blocks to hotel. It was very easy.

We took a group bus to Chicago for the weekend of the Taste of Chicago, July 12-13. It was the perfect location since the Taste was right across the street in Grant Park. Even when the event was cancelled for Saturday just as we arrived (due to the rain, which promptly stopped), we still had a great time. We walked to the Aquarium and Field Museum, along the lake and to bookstores and restaurants. Another time we plan to take the ferry to and from Navy Pier. On Sunday the Taste was open so we enjoyed it for a couple of hours before heading home. The porters were very helpful in holding our luggage before check in and after checkout.

We had stayed at the Congress Plaza once before, and our room faced a wall. This time we were on the top floor facing the park and the lake beyond that, very nice. Each room is unique--this one had a step up to the bathroom! In spite of being an old, old hotel, the water pressure was fantastic, lots of electric outlets, and a very comfortable bed. We like that the whole place is non-smoking. We also like the breakfast at the hotel, tasty and well-priced. We were told the hotel was full, but it was very quiet.

I would improve the lighting. Just adding a wall lamp (and maybe a wall shelf too) to the side of the bed with no table would help a lot. I'm not sure what can be done about the condensation on the bathroom floor around the toilet. We put down extra towels so we wouldn't slip.

The Congress Plaza is a little shabby but if it wasn't, we couldn't afford to stay there. We had a King Lake view that we got off of Priceline for $150; the room was clean, and somewhat bigger than I thought it would be, with an amazing view from the 13th floor. My only complaint is that the shower head was placed too high for me to adjust while in the shower but this isn't the first hotel I've stayed at that has it that way.
