Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago Downtown
Ranked #85 of 192 Hotels in Chicago
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 2 January 2014

This was our first stay with the Hilton Embassy Suites on N. State Street in downtown Chicago, and there are two sides to this hotel...

First of all - Hilton did everything right. The hotel is in a great location...the hotel is clean and the employees are friendly. We requested a quiet room on an upper floor, and that's exactly what the hotel delivered - it was all great. (The room, by the way, was HUGE. We loved that...)

The problem with the hotel? Laughing! The GUESTS. This atrium-style hotel is designed so that guests tend to "hang out" on the atrium-level floor, whether it be to enjoy the unusual, viewable pool (viewable from the public areas), the free breakfast, or the free drinks and snacks at the manager's reception, etc. etc.. The problem is that guests all arrive for breakfast at the same time, making for a half hour wait for the buffet line. And I suppose its the casual environment of the place, but a LOT of the guests show up for breakfast in their pajamas. Really??!! That was just so ODD to witness. And the long breakfast lines were frustrating. Also - the free drinks at the manager's reception made for a lot of drunken guests. LOUD...drunken guests - the kind who spill drinks, eat a pile of free food and then leave all their leftovers on the tables (and on the floor). And the parents, while drinking, tend to let their kids run wild. The pool was mayhem, at night, and the public TV's and computers were overrun with loud, cheering adults and kids, which made for EXTREMELY loud public areas. Seriously - the guests scared us away, forcing us to return to the quiet of our upper-floor room. If you stayed in a lower level room, during these peak party hours? Good luck on having a quiet thought, even in the security of your room. And I felt so sorry for the employees - many of the adult guests were drinking too much, and behaving like pigs...and every time they spilled something they would seek out an employee to clean up their mess. The employees handled it professionally, however - they must be accustomed to it.

So...I suppose if you enjoy the "party scene" or the "pajama scene" in the public areas - combined with the quality service of the hotel employees - then this hotel is for you. (Did I mention the great hotel location? It is, indeed, great.) But if you prefer a more refined, professional environment, and "adult" behavior from the adult guests, it might be best too look elsewhere. We're torn - we loved what we paid for - the location, the room and the staff - but we were totally bummed by the environment created by the type of guests who were occupying the same space.

Room Tip: I hate to give away our room location - it was like a private save-my-sanity zone - but it was Room...

We stay in this hotel every year and it has just been updated and looks very nice. We prefer this hotel because we are a family of 5 and the 2 bedroom suites are reasonable and allows for the entire family to stay together. In addition, it is right on the corner of Ohio and State Street in the heart of beautiful Chicago just a few blocks from the Magnificent Mile. We walk everywhere from the our hotel. Parking is a bit expensive ($59/day) but the rooms are reasonable. Make sure to book your room and then check on prices every week as your dates approach, you sometimes find specials or price deals the closer you get to your check in date. One pet peeve is no free Wi-Fi, but I did just fine on my smart phone. There are plenty of places with free Wi-Fi. As a large family we save money by eating breakfast free in the morning and the breakfast is very good with eggs cooked to order, juice, pancakes and potatoes. Also there are free drinks in the evening for a few hours. Great family hotel! We enjoyed walking to Kringle Town (Daily Plaza), Marshall Fields, Water Tower place to shop and then Gino's East and of Course Garrett Popcorn! Don't forget to stop at Ghirardelli Chocolate for dessert!

Room Tip: Try to get a special which includes parking if you have a car. Try to walk to as many places as pos...

We arrived Christmas night. The hotel was the regular embassy suites with a giant atrium.
Only of 2 of the 4 elevators where working. This was fine the first night but the second night the hotel was packed and the wait was horrible. This might have been fine if it was business traffic but it was families with all the stuff we travel with. Usually embassy suites is fun for my daughter, she can have the living room to herself, but it was so loud she ended up sleeping with us. We were giving complementary ear plugs for the city noise (which I do not mind) but the echo from guests late into the night was just constant until about midnight.
When I asked for the pass word for the WiFi I was told I was not the right level of Hilton Honors member to receive it complementary. I fussed and got it anyway, but it was about worthless just soooo slow. We left something in our car and went down to the garage to retrieve it. We spent about 10 minutes looking around our car for the missing ear buds and no one was ever around.
The breakfast was fantastic but on the second day the line was just too long. We grabbed a muffin and ate at great local place for brunch. The location rocked but there are other hotels very close and I would look at those. The concierge was really helpful and I must say Mr Stone was the best part of the hotel.

Room Tip: High floors are quieter just be sure the elevators are all working.

This hotel is in a prime location close to a multitude of restaurants and shopping, with even a grocery store near by, as is the RedLine Grand stop. Hotel staff was excellent. Being this was Christmas I noticed during the evening reception they had ginger bread house activities for the kids. Only negative thing during the stay was 2 of the elevators were down for maintenance, so being on the 5th floor we used the stairs a lot, which proved to be quite a bit quicker. The breakfast was excellent both days.

The Embassy Suites on State Street has been our best hotel experience in Chicago. We have stayed a half dozen times and have not decided we will use this hotel for future Chicago Trips. The location is great, being close to many dining choices. It is walking distance to most of downtown Chicago ... even in the frigid cold weather.

Location is not bad, easy access to Nordstrom and short cab rides (in bad weather) to Mich. Ave. However, the 3-days I was there, only 2 of 4 elevaztors working which has a huge pain in the ... Did not see anyone working on them during this time. Breakfast and reception lines are huge and for me there are just too many other options than dealing with this every day. Safe location, staff good and okay lobby. Very best thing is the restaurant attached!!

I stay here for work quite a bit. Although I am working it is a great location and near all shopping and dining you could want. Very clean hotel and rooms. Great hot breakfast and managers reception. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: High floor on any side except west unless you like parking garages!
