Last year, my husband booked the Hyatt on Wacker Drive for our five day stay in Chicago during his ASCO conference. This year, I insisted that we upgrade to the Park Hyatt during our prerequisite ASCO trip in June. I had stayed at the Park Hyatt years ago (right after it opened), and it was just as I remembered - and so much more!
The building has 18 floors of hotel rooms with private residences built on top. (There is a separate entrance for the hotel.) The lobby is serene and quiet (the complete opposite of our experience at the Hyatt, which was beyond chaotic and noisy). There was no line to check in when we arrived, and we were ushered up to our room (1808, a corner unit on the top floor) immediately. The room was well layed out with a foyer area leading to a long hallway past the closet, minibar, bathroom, then into the bedroom. There was the most fantastic view of Michigan Avenue & the lake from our windows. This surely ranks high on the list for reasons to stay at the Park Hyatt! There are sheer and black out shades for all windows, which can be operated by controls by the nightstand. The room was well-insulated from hallway noise; I couldn't hear much in the hallway, though it helped to be in a corner unit. I never got the sense that the hotel was fully booked even though I am sure it was packed with 45,000 attendees in Chicago for ASCO.
The king-size bed was excellent and super comfortable, the LDC TV was fine (the DVD player an employee brought up and hooked up to the TV was much appreciated), the Herman Miller Eames lounger and ottoman were amazing and stylish. My husband is such a fan of the lounger that he wanted to buy one for our condo as well - until he realized the price! We loved the small but thoughtful touches in the room - complimentary bottled water every day, Frette bathrobes, complimentary guest services office off the lobby on the first floor (for computer and printer use), extra toiletries in the closet.
Housekeeping was thorough and neat in general. My only complaint about housekeeping is that they aren't particular or prompt about clearing room service trays that are ready to be taken. We had an instance or two in which housekeeping left the trays & tables and cleared the entire room otherwise. Just made it seem less clean.
The spa on the 7th floor didn't have availability for the day I requested, so I instead visited the Peninsula's spa, which is wonderful and just a block away. I would recommend the Peninsula in general for their spa services, but I personally didn't have the most relaxing experience. My aesthetician was efficient and quite forceful; the manicure I received was fine but I didn't feel relaxed until I lounged on their outdoor terrace post-manicure. Anyway, the Park Hyatt's spa, fitness center, restaurant (nomi) and their outdoor lounge area (nomi garden) are all located on the 7th floor. Drinks at nomi garden were pretty good; not going to lie though - paying $20 for a drink was a surprise, even after living in NYC for five years.
We ordered from room service three times, and all three times, their estimated delivery times were spot on. Everything we ordered - 800 burger, buffalo chicken wings, chicken caesar salad, sushi from nomi, etc - was pretty tasty. Note: there is an automatic 17% service charge for all room service orders.
On our last day in Chicago, my husband and I reserved two biked through concierge at the Park Hyatt and went biking along the lake for a few hours. It was so lovely to be outside on bikes for a change! We recommend guests at the Park Hyatt make use of this offering. The bikes were in okay condition (mine had handlebars that were unbalanced and the bike creaked quite a bit), but overall, it was fine. They provide helmets, locks, bottled water, etc for the four hours you're allowed to take the bikes. Of course, there is a waiver form to be signed by everyone using the bikes.
We loved our stay at the Park Hyatt. It was luxurious, comfortable, quiet, elegant - we felt very well taken care of during our five days there. We would recommend the hotel to everyone - friends, acquaintances, colleagues, family. Make sure to ask for a room with a view of Michigan Avenue & the lake - it was spectacular!
