“Downtown Chic Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2013

Great little boutique hotel set in a great location, close to Michigan Avenue, restaurants, convenience store, but lacks a little in those little details that could make it get an Excellent rating from me. The room had not been detailed very well...left over stains in the sink, toilet!!! And the carpet was less than I would expect...overall, a nice 4-star experience, but pricey for what you get!

Room Tip: I was on the southwest corner with a bit of a city view, no noticeable noise, etc.

Stayed at the Hotel Indigo Gold Coast with my husband over a 3-night city-break weekend in May. We actually also had a reservation at the ACME Hotel company, but decided the high prices weren't worth it, so opted for the Indigo. We had some friends also in Chicago over the same weekend and they stayed at the Dana Hotel. We got a peek into their room and while it was lovely, we felt we'd made the better choice for value and comfort.

Having previously stayed at the Hotel Indigo in San Diego, we knew our stay would be comfortable. And overall it was. The staff were nice and unintrusive. The hotel's decor is vibrant and fairly modern. The free wi-fi was great. I felt that the bed and pillows were super comfortable, (my husband didn't agree, so just putting out an alternate view). We had coffee in the restaurant one morning and service was pleasant. Overall, we had an enjoyable stay, but there were two niggles I think others should be aware of:

1) The building is old, so there are renovations going on at any one time. These aren't intrusive or noisy, but our room did have paint splotches on walls and around door trims that hadn't been cleaned up. There was a hole in the wall in the hallway where there was going to be an electrical outlet at some point in the future. Again, not enough to ruin a stay, but if you're detail oriented and paying over $200/night for a room there, it might annoy you a bit.
2) We stayed in room 1407, which was an adjoining room to 1405. I don't know if it is the laminate floors, the old building, or the door between the rooms being too thin -- but we could LITERALLY hear every single thing that went on in the room next door (and I'm sure our neighbours could hear us as well). Thankfully, during our stay we only heard a loud television and early morning phone calls to some woman's father. However, this did disturb our sleep, and I'm not kidding when I say it was like our fellow hotel guests were in the same room with us. Perhaps the hotel might consider installing carpet in those rooms to improve the soundproofing?

The best feature of this hotel is its location. It's in a quiet neighbourhood, about 15-minutes walk to the Magnificent Mile, and it's right around the corner to the Red Metra line. There is a 24-hour CVS/Walgreens around the corner and lots of great restaurants and bars down the street. We opted for a larger room with a fireplace, but to be honest I'm not sure this was worth the extra money as we couldn't figure out how to turn on the fireplace anyway and we were out of the room more than we were in it.

We'd stay again if the price was right.

Room Tip: Not sure that fireplace rooms are worth the price and also note sure that any rooms have a great vie...

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback! We have been doing some updating and appreciate your understanding! While our building was built in the 1920's and can prove to have some minor challenges every now and then, we embrace the history and the difference between our hotel and many others in the area. Did you know when the hotel opened it had 312 rooms compared to our 165? Crazy, right? We hope you'll come back and see us again soon!!

We stayed here for four nights, and overall we received great services. We had four people in the room and didn't find any problem with the size of the room. We thought it was a good size. Not small, it was perfect.

We purchased the penny parking package through their main website which offered indoor parking for our car (the parking lot was situated right beside the hotel which was convenient), however, there was no in/out privileges which was perfectly fine since we didn't plan on driving around in downtown Chicago. The rooms were clean and services were very friendly. The location was perfect too, we were close to many eatery and dining places. We were also very close to some of the most famous Pizza places which was a plus. Wallgreens was 2 mins away from the hotel, so if you needed anything emergency, it is open 24 hrs. Great hotel, I would stay again in the future.

It will be available again in the fall, but in the meantime, we do have a ton of other great packages. May we suggest on of our packages including breakfast? This hotel is in the perfect location in Chicago. Not in the middle of the city, it is located in the middle of a neighborhood, which happens to be in walking distance to everything. From Michigan Ave, to Rush street and all the great restaurants! When I come back this summer it will be the only place for me!! The room was clean, and the staff is wonderful!!

The 5 stars says it all, but here's the details so you can see if these are features you'd want in a hotel.

Great location - just around the corner from a Red Line stop. There is construction going on at that train station, but we heard nothing anywhere in the hotel. About a mile north of the Navy Pier, which made a great walk along Lake Michigan. About 5 stops south of Wrigley Field. Neighborhood was safe. There's a 24 hour Walgreens down the block if you need some seltzer or chocolate.

We checked in a little early, and they were able to accomodate us. In any encounter with the front desk staff we were pleased. We were on floor 11, from which we could see Lake Michigan. Had we had a room with an Alley view that would have been OK as we were in Chicago to see it from the streets, not from a hotel room.

There were two big beds. This was a large reason why we picked this hotel as me & my adult son would be in one bed and a buddy (who snored by the way, if I haven't told you pal!!) would be in the other. Other than my son hogging all the blankets (which were of ample size), it was good!!

There were enough towels for all of us.

The place was clean and neat.

Breakfast in the lobby was great. Good, healthy food. With our deal from a website with breakfast being included, that made it even better. I see some commenters had issues about only one person taking care of all the tables, but our waitress was great and took care of everybody just fine. I forget her name but she was wonderful with a nice smile to start the day.

Yes, the TV is an old TV, not a flat screen, as I've seen some commenters comment on. Ya know what? I have an old TV in my house, too. Is that even worth commenting on? Aren't you in Chicago to see Chicago, not watch TV???

The Cubbies even won on the night we stayed!! Can we give Indigo credit for that?

The Cubbies did lose on the next day, though. Maybe I'll blame that one on the airlines....

I'd have no problem staying here again the next time I'm in Chicago.

Room Tip: Since some folks had comments about Subway construction noise and/or the view, maybe ask for a room...

Your review could not have been any better!! We appreciate your comments regarding our TV's, we are in the middle of our TV replacement project at this time and hope when you return you'll be able to watch sports highlights on a new flat screen TV. While we cannot take credit for the Cubs win, we're delighted you chose to stay with us and that you were kind enough to share your comments with the internet world! Please do come and stay again, the summer in our neighborhood could not get much better for a true Chicago experience. Thanks for trying out our Hotel Indigo!!
