“Great Hotel Near Millennium Park”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

I stayed at the Silversmith for 4 days and 3 nights (Feb 16-19) and could not have asked for a better place. The hotel is a short walk from Millennium Park (The Bean) and the Art Institute of Chicago. It's a street away from shopping on Michigan Avenue and close to several restaurants. The concierge helped with food recommendations and mailing some letters. The room (810) was large and looked newly renovated. Drawback was that the view from the window was of the back of the adjacent building. Also, you can hear the el train from Wabash Ave in your room. It was muffled, but I'm sure the noise level depends on where you are in the hotel.

Next time I'm in Chicago, I will definitely be staying at the Silversmith again.

Room Tip: Front facing rooms will hear the el train for sure.

We booked this hotel because the price was reasonable and it was right near all of our favorite Chicago attractions - the Bean, Inteligentsia coffee and Macy's - and super close to L trains. We arrived early, 10am, to ask if we could store our bags. They actually had an early checkin and let us checkin that early. The desk clerk, Ariel, was so helpful, friendly and sweet. The room was clean, spacious, beautiful an cozy. But the bathroom was a great surprise - a huge shower, plush towels and robes in the closet. The bed was heavenly and the floor very quiet. We worked out in the fitness center which had high-tech treadmills and other machines, free weights, towels, filtered water, mats and tv's on every machine. LOVED working out there. The breakfast was light but perfect and the entire staff was incredibly sweet and helpful. We were able to store our bags after check out until we were ready to head out of town and the valets and concierge were so friendly. We will be staying here every time we visit Chicago for sure!

Beautifully renovated with simple, yet elegant decor, excellent location. Easy walk to the CSO, Art Institute, Millennium Park, the Mile and all L Lines. Priced right, with a complementary light breakfast, and enthusiastic staff. This hotel is the best kept secret, for lodging, in the Loop.

Room Tip: Our room had a shower that was perfect for our Valentine's weekend get-a-way.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Silversmith. It was located convenient to everything we were in Chicago for. The room was very spacious, with a sitting area and couch and a separate area for the bed. The room and the bathroom was very clean. The staff was very pleasant. The only items that keep this hotel from getting a 5 is the noise from the "L", (which the hotel cannot do anything about) and the breakfast, which was a little skimpy. However, that being said, we would stay here again.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the more quiet.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Silversmith. Unassuming from the outside, it is a historic building full of character. From the moment I arrived, the staff was incredibly accommodating and kind - I was in town for a conference, and needed to check in a bit early to make it to my presentation on time - they helped me out with this, and also with my printing needs even though the business center was down. While the exceptional staff was the best part of my stay, all else was pleasant as well - rooms were well decorated and very comfortable with a spacious bathroom. Nice breakfast every morning, and while the fitness center was in repair and the replacement small, the hotel is right near the lake path so I enjoyed beautiful bundled up runs outside. Great location overall, easy to walk where I needed to get, easy train access. I'd happily stay here again.

Don't let the proximity to the L scare you away, this is a top notch hotel. I stayed for 3 nights and the quality of the fit and finish is very impressive, akin to some of the finest hotels I've stayed. Large, marble baths, frameless shower doors, comfortable beds with fine linen... the list goes on. The only gripes would be related to the remodeling going on the ground floor and the lack of effective seating for breakfast, but this will be soon remedied at the end of the month. I happened to extend my stay one day and they entered a higher rate for that night. Once I made the front desk aware of the issue they happily corrected it with no questions asked and no regurgitation of 'policy' that you often get when asking for corrections to be made to your bill. Well done Sliversmith! You have a loyal guest and I look forward to my next stay after your remodeling is complete.

Room Tip: Higher floors are more desirable.

Pretty old building newly remodeled rooms. I loved the silver rooms and hallways and the blown glass decorations in the halls, but was really fantastic was the help. From the doorman to the lobby staff (especially Ariel who had a warm smile and a great recommendation for dining on my first night).

The room was small and there wasn't any view but it was quiet and the bathroom was large, clean and bright. Also, the Madison/Wabash L-train stop is right out front so there was no walk from the train in the cold.

The entire staff seems to love working there and that is immeasurable. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: My room was in the back on the 7th floor -- no view but it was quiet and away from the train and the...
