“DO NOT plan to use the sofa bed!!!”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

There's a lot to recommend about DeWitt Place: good location, well-designed small apartments, quiet street. But I was traveling with my daughter and we needed the sofa bed, advertised as a second bed. It was AWFUL! It's a folding vinyl thing that didn't even open flat. It was impossible to sleep in the middle of it--a deep ditch with a metal bar--and the two sides were each about 22" wide, sloped to the side, and graced with another metal cross-bar cutting into your ribs. THIS IS NOT A SOFA BED; IT IS AN INSTRUMENT OF TORTURE. Sleeping on the floor would have been far more comfortable, but there was not even one extra blanket to spread on the floor.
Also: This was Memorial Day weekend, over 85 degrees, crowded beaches--and NO AIR CONDITIONER OR WINDOW FANS! There were other smaller flaws--no ventilation of any kind in the bathroom (is this legal?); no plug for the bathtub; no one at the front desk before 8 AM. But I could have forgiven it all if not for The Rack, a.k.a. sofa bed. (We DID indicate in a note in our reservation that we needed this bed! Also, it was not made up for us--we just found some sheets stuffed on a closet shelf. Luckily it was too hot to need blankets, as there were none.)

Room Tip: Sofa bed is NOT fit for human use!!!!!

Overall the apartments in this hotel are very good. The hotel is within 5 minutes walk from the beach and 10 minutes from the main shopping area and the very imposing Hancock Tower
Entry to the hotel is controlled by swipe card, which you need to keep safe as you will be charged if you lock yourself out.
Reception is small which can be frustrating if there's a queue, but the concierge is normally on hand to assist during peak times
Rooms have double beds, sofa and a fully working kitchen. Don't expect complimentary tea or coffee as you'll be disappointed.
The hotel does provide free wifi but in our room on floor 6 it wasn't great. Public wifi in the lounge was however good. Also the hotel provides free access to a desktop computer and printer for guests who might want to print out boarding passes etc very useful!
Check in and check out was hassle free and when we wanted help to book an early taxi the concierge sorted this out immediately
The only criticism we had was with the bed. It wasn't very comfortable and as the heating cannot be controlled in the rooms it was either too cold or too hot. Air conditioning consisted of a fan above the bed that was less than ideal
On the whole we enjoyed the four nights we stayed here and we would happily return to Dewitt in the future.

Room Tip: The lower floors have better wifi reception

Charmingly old-style, yet modernized to be comfortable. Great location, very helpful staff, all the comforts of home. My only complaint was with the sofa bed. The mattress was thin and I could feel all the springs (and I don't weight much). If we hadn't needed to use the sofa bed, our visit would have been 100% perfect! The elevator is old, but super charming, and I found myself looking for excuses to ride!

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view!

This place is setup like an apartment and not a hotel.
So, if you're looking to live like a true Chicago resident this place is for you. But if you're used to 24-hour round the clock assistance at the front desk, maintenance or housekeeping...you will be very disappointed.
I was surprised that they charged for replacement keys if you lost your room key, due to the fact that they don't have staff available at the front desk in case you are locked out. Could you imagine having to wait for maintenance to come in at 8 am to be let back into your room & being charged $25. The plus about this place is definitely the in-room appliances, which include refrigerator, microwave, and stove. Most Chicago hotels don't provide any of these, unless you're willing to pay an additional fee.
The location is great 2 blocks down from the John Hancock Observatory and depending on which location your room faces the chance for great lakeside views. I would go back for the inexpensive price, but I would definitely lower my expections on luxury amenities.
Oh, and unless you're exhausted from all the walking you've done on the magnificient mile, getting a good night sleep is unlikely, since the walls are so thin and the bed creaks with every movenent.

Room Tip: As for a lake view. Very slow elevator so a lower level floor is best.

This hotel was ok for 2 nights in Chicago. It's handy to restaurants, shops and bus route. Good value for money. It is close other lake end of town and some rooms have glimpses. Rooms were quiet and warm.
Lifts are old small and slow but they get you there.

This was a one of the unexpected highlights of my travels through the USA. Terrific location, extremely helpful staff and great apartment. As I was travelling by train I sometimes arrived early in towns hoping to get access to my room as soon as possible, unfortunately rooms were rarely available before 3-4. Arriving here at 9am hoping to just leave my luggage I was delighted to be cheerfully informed that my apartment was immediately available. My next trip Chicago will definitely include a stay at the DeWitt.

The pros - the location - one block from the lake - 2/3 from north Michigan avenue and the Hancock Tower, the friendly helpful staff, the price, the room was clean, bright and a decent size with a super comfortable bed, and there's a little kitchen area if required.

The cons - a little run down - old bath tub, draughty windows, a bit noisy - especially the fridge and the plumbing, but ear plugs sorted that out.

The pros far far outweigh the cons.
