“Don't blink or you'll miss it!”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

My friends and I make a list through the fall and winter months of things to do and places to go in the spring and summer months when we tend to have more free time. Today we went to Collinsville, IL to see the "World's Largest Catsup Bottle" (which is another review!). After seeing the bottle, we , of course wanted to eat lunch. We asked at the the pharmacy in town (full of souvenirs!) where they would suggest eating while in Collinsville. We chose "The Sandwich Shop" and were very pleased indeed. Very small town-ish, which made it the perfect spot. We were truly NOT looking for a nationwide chain restaurant.
The service:great! The food : comfort food! The prices: amazing! One of my friends got a Reuben sandwich which was HUGE and tasted great. My other friend and I got the Monday special: Meatloaf Plate with two sides and a dinner role. The sandwich was about $5.50 and the daily special was $6.50 ( and quite a bit of food!). Can't say enough for this venue. Whether you live close by or are traveling through (to see the Catsup bottle!), stop and eat at the Sandwich Shop. You'll be glad you did!

“Could be a great place...needs help!”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

This gem is tucked between some downtown businesses, in a non-descript storefront.

As soon as you enter, you feel like you've stepped back in time - 70s décor, complete with hard orange booths, vinyl swivel stools at the counter, and dark wood paneling.

What character!! It's exciting to find this kind of place: untouched, without 'modern' updates to the décor, especially since we are very fond of Mom and Pop restaurants!

Once you've enjoyed taking in the atmosphere, you realize that you've been waiting for over 15 minutes just to receive a menu. Sadly, the menu is not extensive.

It offers affordable selections like a BLT, grilled cheese, soups, and other sandwiches (fish specials on Fridays).

Wait another 10 minutes for someone to ask if you'd like a drink...and as you attempt to go ahead and order food, the server disappears.

Maybe they're understaffed? But after a few visits, we've discovered that they have hired waitresses who are just oblivious to the needs of their customers.

We've watched guys in the kitchen (through the service window) goofing around, punching each other on the arms, and obsessing over cell phones. Who knows what they're supposed to be doing??? Cooking perhaps?

We've suffered with their choice to serve only Pepsi products. But when you order a Dr. Pepper and it tastes rotten, and it takes flagging down help to let someone know - only to be told that the line is "running on empty," and they will replace it - and THEN find out 10 minutes later that they are COMPLETELY out of this drink...it is more than annoying.

Maybe offering a water in the meantime would be appropriate?

Last time, it took us over an hour and a half to order, receive our food, eat (the shortest amount of time in this equation), and get our check...THEN, it took almost 10 MORE minutes to pay.

It's disappointing and shocking that a hometown restaurant, which struggles to compete with the chain franchises, allows this kind of perpetually disappointing service.

While the food is decent and the prices extremely fair, this place definitely needs help!

“Downtown dining with the locals”
Reviewed 9 April 2013 via mobile

This place feels like what a small town diner should be. We love the sandwich selections, daily specials, and great coffee. Fresh desserts (if you have any room left) and delicious fries. Warning: the Reuben sandwich is big enough for two! Family friendly.

Definitely try the collinsville burger. The homemade horseradish sauce is to die for.
