“A lovely B&B, comfortable and homely”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

We stayed for two nights at Holly Cottage in the twin room. We were warned it's a small room, which it is, but perfectly acceptable. Well appointed and very comfortable. Slept with windows open and so quiet- despite hurricane type winds sweeping across the southern counties. Breakfast didn't disappoint and it deserves all the excellent reviews already given on trip advisor. Ate at the pub across the road - very good food. Lovely walk to Chatsworth. Wouldn't hesitate recommending Holly Cottage.

We stayed in the green room, which as stated is small, but perfectly adequate. The room was nicely decorated, the bed was comfortable and the shower room had everything provided. There was an ample supply of coffees and teas in the room. The hosts were very welcoming and the choice for breakfast was excellent.

The Devonshire Arms is just across the road and we enjoyed an excellent dinner there

All in all hard to fault, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend Holly Cottage if you're thinking of staying in this area

We stayed in the green room which was beautifully decorated, nice bathroom, comfortable bed. We were welcomed with cake. Had dinner at the neighboring pub which was delightful as well. It is a beautiful quiet area in a beautiful area in England. Sarah manages to make you feel as if you are at home and attends to your needs while also manning the post office and market. She amazed us. Delightful breakfast. Hope to return again soon.

Holly cottage was a perfect B&B. We stayed in the Blue Room which was charming with delightful added extras and a very generous bathroom. We were offered sponge cake when we arrived which was especially good as was the breakfast. For our evening meal the local pub which was only across the road was reasonable but nothing special. If you want a village cottage B&B look no further

Spent two lovely nights at this wonderful b&b. Stayed in the green room, a small double, just perfect, lovely and warm, spotlessly clean, quiet and relaxing. Breakfast was really fantastic, couldn't have wanted anymore. The owners were lovely and very welcoming. The cookies in the room were a lovely touch, and my husband enjoyed them very much. Lovely pub just across the road, great food there too!
We would recommend this high class b&b to anyone, and will stay again soon, many thanks, Julie & Adrian

After a wonderful day of touring in Bakewell, including visits to Chatsworth and Haddon Hall (separately reviewed), we knew we would be too tired to drive on further, and planned to stay the night in the area. The reviews for Holly Cottage in Pilsley were outstanding, so we booked there.

The day before, Sarah emailed us to inquire as to our anticipated arrival time. Fortunately, we travel with our notebook, thus we were able to respond. We discovered the reason why she requested we arrive either before noon, or after 5:30 p.m....she runs the post office and store adjacent to the B&B!

It was a rainy afternoon, but we easily found the place...We turned off the B6039 at the sign for Pilsley, travelled a minute or so west, turned right into Pilsley, drove straight down the hill, and just after the post office, and prior to the Devonshire Arms, there was Holly Cottage on our right.

Sarah fortunately got back to her place by 5:15, so we were able to settle into our room. It was spacious, nicely decorated, with an adjoining bathroom of remarkable size for an older building. There were no luggage racks, so we worked with our luggage from the floor. The bed was extremely comfortable. The shower had nice temperature and decent power. The sink seemed typical for UK, with separate faucets for the hot and cold water, the reason for there not being a combined faucet for both eludes us. There was ample shelf space, nice toiletries. The Blue Room faced the back of the building, so we had a nice view of the cottage gardens belonging to the other Pilsley residents in that direction.

The informational book provided for guests offered apologies for slow internet service, but it had evidently been upgraded since that was written, since our WiFi signal was strong and the download rate very fast.

The Devonshire Arms, separately reviewed, provided a terrific and extraordinarily convenient dining option, was a fifteen second walk out the door and to the right.

After a sound night's sleep, quiet with the windows wide open, we enjoyed the Holly Cottage breakfast...porridge for us both, nice coffee and orange juice, my wife opted for the sausage, hash browns, and I enjoyed the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

The experience definitely warranted a five rating, consistent with the ratings offered by other tripadvisor reviewers who have preceded us here, and provided the information which allowed us to make a good decision. Just one warning, though. The room was up a steep flight of stairs, with a bend at the bottom, and the only hand support was provided by a thick rope deployed along one side. That would be the only single negative, otherwise it would be difficult to imagine anyone not enjoying a stay at Holly Cottage just as much as we did.
