“A family treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 February 2014 via mobile

Brought my wife and son to Komune finally for the first time after numerous trips there previously in 2013. Thought the conveniency of having a day club by the break was awesome! whilst they're there relaxing, I'm out for a wave. Reviewed the plans for the next developments ongoing, (despite the construction) the beach club is looking like a vast upgrade and further again more to do for the family. Overall great time, great service, you pay for what you get. Well worth going again.

Went to Komune this weekend with a group of friends, absolutely magic spot, great pool and loungers to soak up the Bali rays and watch the surfers in the world class waves directly in front. Food and drinks were all of excellent quality and the service was the best we have experienced to date in Bali. Thanks Wayne for making the day one to remember!

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2014

Stayed for a close to a week. Found the resort at 1st glance and day amazing but after travelling staying at different resorts in bali and Nusa lembongan prior to this I started noticing things that Komune could do better for the four star rating they give themselves and the price they charge for the small rooms they provide. Whilst the rooms are clean there is no mini bar or outside seats to relax on. Everything is geared for spending money in the beach bar and boy don't they charge for that, we had dinner last night and paid $46 australian dollars for 2 chicken snitzels and a side dish of chips, i was thinking that living and eating the same meal in Australia is much cheaper. So much for a cheap bali holiday.

Komune appears to have provide the Eco we are doing the right thing buy the surfer front and if this is the case they should charge better prices than $4 dollars for a bintang or $10 a cocktail. Everything you buy is subject to 11%vat and 10%service charge , where does this come from and what determines this. More than any other 4star resort I have stayed in at bali.

The other thing I found strange is we paid good money to stay at Komune and had to share the pool area with day trippers which made for a very congested pool area and watching them claim towels to take home at the end of the day very funny. It would be nice if komune provide pool areas separate to non paying guests to relax without all the hustle. It would be good to see the paying and staying customers to receive more realistic rewards and discounts for everyday eating and drinking and charge more for the large amount of day trippers that frequent komune.

I found the charge for internet in your room a joke, another ploy to make you get free internet by drinking and spending money at the beach bar. Even the day trippers get the free internet. To bad if you are staying here no loyalty for the paying and staying customer.

1 area I found nuts was allowing surfers to night surf under lights and charging them $20 to do so, keramus can be a very dangerous wave and I watched 5 surfers who where very inexperienced go out at 10pm at night, this will come back to haunt komune 1 day as someone will get seriously injured or worse god forbid. If someone got into trouble there is no one there to provide assistance from the resort, irresponsible madness.

I would think considering everything is aimed at the surfer market it would be nice to have a repair area allocated for fixing minor dings and repairs required.

By all accounts this place is very nice but the little things Komune are missing to make it a better place to stay by the $95 a night paying customer need to be fixed or the 4 star rating is a joke.

Hi Kevin

Thankyou for the time and effort you have taken to provide us this valuable feedback on our business. We also thank you for staying with us and the team at Komune appreciate the 4 star review you have us.

Some of the items you have mentioned have been advised to us by other customers and and we are working toward resolving these issues - for example we are one month away from completing design modifications to most of our rooms to include, among other items, a mini bar and hopefully the first of these rooms will be on line in March.

These room upgrades will also see the introduction of free wi-fi for our in house guests as well.

In relation to your comments about the pool area being very busy our builders have been working on providing an exclusive area for in house guests to retreat to. You would have seen the construction work going on just behind the beach club. This will be the new Komune "Health Hub" - a private guest only area including a 25 m private pool and day bed area, yoga, health and fitness facilities and a kids club.

We have realised due to the popularity of the beach club that this facility is needed for our guests and we are constructing this as fast as possible and hope to have it open by June 2014. We apologise we did not have this ready for your stay as this may have alleviated some of your concerns.

In the short term our team are building new day bed areas and will activate a policy to reserve a rage proportion of the day beds for in house guests to help them to secure a place around the pool in the morning.

In relation to your comments on our menu pricing and the VAT and service charge taxes we apply to all our menu items we have the following comments;

The application of VAT and service charge is the Indonesian law and you will find every major western hotel represent their pricing with the same rate of tax and service charge we do. If they are not doing so then they are breaking the law.

All legally operated restaurants must charge the 10% VAT tax. The service charge can vary between 6-11% and again this is a legal requirement for us to collect and pay in accordance with Indonesian workplace laws. All major western hotels charge 11% so if we want to have any good staff work for us that is what we have to charge. 100% of the service charge goes to our staff by law.

In relation to your specific pricing issues we would like to clarify your comments

Our chicken snitzel price ex tax is $14.50 and our side of fries $1.85.

Our cocktail is $8.30 and our Bintang $3.07 ex tax at todays Australian dollar exchange rates.

This may seem high for Bali but we pay more than Australian prices for our supplies in many instances in particular for western style dishes and drinks - for example the two 30ml shots making up a cocktail cost us at least 20% more than at our resort in Australia now because we use the real alcohol directly imported from the major spirits suppliers - not remixed products you can find in many places.

The cost of Bintang per bottle is more than the equivalent basic beer in Australia for us to buy when bought correctly from the Heineken supplier so you know and trust the source.

We have taken a policy at our resort to only source supplies for food and alcohol from the suppliers servicing the best western hotels to ensure we have the highest level of confidence in our food safety.

This and the fact we pay the correct taxes mean we will be slightly dearer than other lower profile restaurants and bars in Bali who have chosen to be non compliant.

We do however have many very heathy and delicious Indonesian main course items on our menu that are very well priced and many well below $10 if budget is a problem. We believe we have provided a fairly priced menu and have tried to ensure we cater for surfers on lower budgets with many of our menu items. The menus and our tax policy are all fully disclosed on our website at

Night surfing - We agree with you also that night surfing may be risky at a break like Keramas. We also believe its also risky during the day as well as is surfing in general at any world class reef breaks.

The night surfing is entirely optional and we have 3 trained lifeguards on duty while it is operation. Our lifeguard carry all equipment used at Australian beach lifeguard stations and monitor the beach during the day as well. All surfers undertaking night surfing are advised of the risks of doing so and of our safety rules and sign a disclosure confirming they have been made fully aware of the risks.

We have done the night surfing to provide our guests an option to have a surf at a world class break like Keramas with only 5 other surfers out. Many people have enjoyed this experience and we believe it is a nice option to have available for our guests to enhance their stay and a great spectacle for guests to watch from the beach club. We offset all power used on the lights with our solar panels installed on roofs.

In relation to your comment about not having a ding repair area - we do have on site a same day, very low cost ding repair service for our guests, run by Ida in the warung.

We will make sure in future our guests are made aware of the ding repair service in our warung area and also make guests aware that we have lifeguards on duty overseeing the night surfing.

Kevin thanks for your 4 star rating and your feedback and the time you have spent to give us some thoughtful feedback is appreciated.

We will work hard on the points you made that we do have control of to improve our guest experience and hope if you visit again you will notice some great improvements.

Please do not hesitate to contact Wayne our General Manager if you have any further issues you would like to discuss.

Kind Regards

Tony (Owner)

Been to Bali 4 times now and every time without fail I've managed to swing by Komune for a meal, Binnie and wave. Hands down no complaints, best place to go. Would go there again 1000 times over... Wayne is a great bloke, never met a GM who actually had the time to meet and have a bit of a chat with the guests. Perfect family retreat, couldn't ask for anything more.

Amazing service from the staff (all members!!)
The staff have a kind and caring approach (even trying to learn every guests first name:)
The staff have excellent English skills ( level equivalent to the Four Seasons At Jimb. Bay - which I would rate as the best on Bali:))!!!!! )

The owner surfs (rather well!!) and knows what surfers appreciate, and has built it into the culture of the place e.g. like warm outdoor showers and fresh towels after surfing.... Followed by a barman offering your a juice or breakfast!!!)

The manager is on deck looking after everyone (like an Italian nono at the wedding if his grand daughter!!)
, the restaurant manager is a 'living champion'!!! Runs a tight ship with the coolest relaxed and accommodating manner!!!
Rooms are super new modern and cleaned daily.
Transport is sooooo smoothly organised in house, pre priced , fairly priced, and pre paid (which is a great thing in Indonesia - as these situations can often feel awkward ).
So much thought had gone into the planning and training and set up of this joints culture, so impressed!!

If you want a place to Surf early, then join your friends/ family for breakfast overlooking the ocean!! This was my experience!! Then relax in the pool overlooking the ocean!!!
This place is A+
And keramas surf break is high quality too!!

Will go back here for sure!

It's the ultimate surfing hotel for core surfers. Keramas is world class surfing spot, and the hotel Komune is the place that will match the reputation of Keramas.
Cleanness, excellent service, quality food, and perfect location are the exact characteristics of the hotel.

Sometimes you're lucky enough to have a wife who makes holiday decisions around where the surf is good. Then you find out they have amazing masseurs, great food and cocktails, and very comfortable rooms. All literally staring at one of the best wet season waves in Indo. From the very approachable GM Wayne down this place is executed as smooth as any resort chain without the cliches. Just a really good place to travel if you have young kids and surf. Pool is the perfect depth for our 4 year old to practise swimming and our 18 month old to play in the shallows while I surf and the wife tries lychee martinis. Just really good. And well priced. Get here before it's over developed.
