“Great Food”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

Went on Sunday before Memorial Day, early, but without a reservation and they were able to seat 5 of us right away. Reservations recommended, tho. Such a unique place, in a small very old church. Croissants and scones instead of dinner rolls, nice touch. Interior was a little cold (literally!) It was a cold rainy day and it didn't feel like they had their heat on. Could use some candles on the tables to cozy it up too. We had the walleye with asparagus, which was excellent. Beef tenderloin shrimp skewers looked good. Most of us were low-carb eaters, so we passed on the garlic mashed potatoes and I only tasted their mac & cheese which is amazing. Not a huge menu, enough choices to please everyone. A little pricey, but I would eat there again. A nice out-of-the-way place if Galena is too crowded.

“A lovely alternative to Galena restaurants”
Reviewed 28 December 2012

We rent homes in the Galena Territory at least a couple of times a year and are always looking for good restaurants in the area. Galena is quite crowded at times so we were happy to disover this little gem of a restaurant in Elizabeth. It is located in an old church and has a lot of charm. A reservation is advisable as the restaurant is quite small but we have been there on a few occasions off-season when there were very few guests. Regardless of the size of the crowd, the service has always been excellent and the server made us feel at home. The menu is limited but the steaks and pork chops are excellent and we have also enjoyed the seafood. While it isn't perfect, the Holy Mackerel compares favorably with most of the restaurants in the Galena area and is worth a try.

“Not excellent, but pretty tasty”
Reviewed 31 March 2012

Adorable little space. There were probably only about 6 other tables with people at them and the background music was generally too quiet so overall it felt too quiet; I felt as though I had to practically whisper to my husband or everyone else in the restaurant would hear me. Decent Pinot Noir by the glass. Hubby ordered the pork tenderloin w/ garlic mashed and I ordered the Provincial w/ scallops and a side of mac 'n cheese. It was a bit confusing because the Provincial was listed under the menu subtitle "Skewers" but isn't actually skewered at all. We each had soup to start, potato leek and the chicken tortilla, which were both excellent. Hubby enjoyed his meal. Mine was OK; the veggies in the Provincial were very tasty but the scallops were a bit tasteless. And for almost twenty five dollars, I expected more than 3 scallops. Got cherry pie ala mode for ice cream that was wonderful. Nicely attentive service.

“Great atmosphere, ok food”
Reviewed 11 November 2011

The restaurant is in an old church and has been very nicely done. It is small, so I would recommend getting a reservation, especially on the weekends. Their website bills them as a steak and seafood restaurant. There were six of us dining with them , and we all had seafood. The service was good, the breads were wonderful (homemade), but the seafood was just average. The walleye had many bones in it, and the scallops were a little overdone. However, the steaks that went past to other tables looked and smelled amazing. The wine list is average, and they have a pretty hefty $20 per bottle corking fee.

It is worth trying, but is not the best place to eat in the Galena area
