Wonderful little cabins located in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest! We stayed in the Bear’s Den cabin for 2 nights with some friends and had a wonderful experience. The cabins are well maintained and nicely decorated. The kitchen is well stocked with equipment for preparing food. Each site is relatively secluded with its own fire pit, grills, etc.

The Rim Rock recreational area is just across the street, and their onsite trail is very nice. We enjoyed seeing all the animals they have on site while walking around the property. Other beautiful hiking spots are just a short drive away. They allow dogs, so feel free to bring your pets!

Thank you so much for your review. Bear's Den is one of our original (with lots of updates) cabins and one of my favorites. So glad you enjoyed Rim Rock trail (also one of my favorites). It looks different each time I hike it. I am very, very pleased that you had a good time. Come back and see us.

My wife and I have stayed at Rim Rock's Dogwood Cabins a total of 4 times now. Each visit has been a great experience and it seems like we are always planning the next trip back. We have stayed in 4 of the 5 cabins on the property, and each one is a unique experience with something different to offer groups of different sizes.

Being from St. Louis, we initially selected these cabins as a mid point to break up the drive during a trip to Nashville. After we had such an enjoyable experience, we simply decided to skip Nashville and just stay at the cabins on our next trip.

The access to hiking trails and southern Illinois' unique landscape provide us with plenty of things to do in the area. Rim Rock recreation area is literally across the street and Garden of the Gods is just a short drive away. Believe me, it is a real treat to come in off the trail and be able to have a hot shower and a comfortable bed waiting for you.

For a quiet romantic getaway, these cabins cannot be beat. We love sitting on the screened in porches and just enjoying the peace and quiet. There is also an immense amount of natural beauty in the area and this is a perfect place to use as a home base during your explorations.

In addition to the peaceful environment and generous accomodations, Bob and Dixie Dart are great hosts who honestly love what they do. It's extremely evident from the individual cabin decorations right down to their cheery and helpful attitude. There are no grumpy innkeepers here.

I heartily recommend these cabins to friends and family every time the subject comes up. Definitely worth your time and money!

Room Tip: Deer Run is our favorite cabin so far with Coyote Hollow a close second. They are all very nice tho...

We work hard to keep up in regard to a good home base where guests can relax after their outdoor adventures. Hope to see you soon.

My wife and I stayed at Rim Rock's Dogwood cabins over Christmas and had a wonderful time. We stayed in the Bear's Den which is the first cabin in the row of three on that side of the property. Since it's the first cabin it is open to larger space than the other two (Cougar's Howl and Deer Run). There's an open field to the right of the property which leads to the gravel road that cuts back to the owner's home and animals. This worked out very well for us since we brought our two dogs. The open area provided an easy place to walk the dogs at night before bedtime without the fear of disturbing any of the other cabins. The cabins are the perfect distance away from each other. We could see both of the other cabins on our side of the property easily enough, yet there was enough space between them to provide privacy.

The Bear's Den was the perfect size for the two of us and our two small dogs. The cabin has a queen size bed, a loft with a mattress, as well as a bunk-bed next to the loft. The sofa in the main living area is also a pull-out sleeper. The cabin was beautifully decorated for the season and smelled wonderful upon arrival. The cabin is very clean. Most everything you would expect to need while on your stay was in the cabin, aside from groceries which you have to bring for yourself.

While on our visit we hiked the 1.6 mile perimeter trail which we started by the Deer Run cabin. It winds back around behind the cabins and back up to the main property where you can see the owner's horses, goats, guineas, donkey's, etc. My dogs enjoyed visiting the local farm life. The trail is well marked and eventually winds back to the main entrance of the property. We also hiked the Rim Rock trail which is a short walk across the main street into the National Forest. This trail was well paved until you get to the stairs to go down into the old Ox Lot and Pounds Hollow. There are rock steps to take you down and then a wood path to the Pounds Hollow recreational area. Eventually you have to turn around and walk back up the same way. This was a pretty long, but beautiful hike, especially for the season. Lastly, we drove to the Garden of the Gods and hiked their short Observation trail. This shows you the infamous Camel Rock along with all of the big rock settings. There are also other trails you can walk but we did not venture out too far. It was a beautiful area for sure.

The last thing I wanted to mention was how nice the owners of the property are. Before our trip I had emailed Dixie because there had been a lot of rain in the area the night before and was worried about possible flooding or road closures that would hamper our ability to follow the directions on the website. Dixie was nice enough to check the roads out for herself and email me back saying everything would be fine. My wife and I will definitely stay at Rim Rock's Dogwood cabins again if we decide to go back into that area. The fact that there is no extra charge for bringing your dogs and how pet friendly they are was a big turn-on for why we chose to stay here. Thanks Bob and Dixie!

My husband and I and our lab stayed two nights at Eagles Retreat. Great cabin, very clean and had all of the amenities we needed. Right at the edge of Shawnee Forest made it a great location for walking our dog on the trails. Thanks to Bob and Dixie for allowing dogs in their cabins. It was a perfect getaway for all of us. Would definitely stay again.

Just a note to let you know how much your review is appreciated and how pleased we are that you (and your lab) enjoyed our cabin and the area. The trails in the Shawnee are so perfect for dog lovers. If you dog loves it as much as ours...it makes me smile just to hike with them. Thank you again for taking the time to give us a review on Trip Advisor. My family of four plus chocolate lab stayed in Coyote Hollow and it was just perfect! The cabins are about 10 years old but look brand new. Bob and Dixie are lovely hosts and have clearly thought of everything to make the cabins comfortable and cozy. As our girls get a little older, we'll probably want one of the bigger cabins, but at this stage it fit us just fine. Bob and Dixie share on their website great recommendations for seeing the best of Shawnee and the cabins are centrally located to reach these spots within 20 to 30 minutes: Garden of Gods, Cave in Rock, horse riding. If you're on Foursquare you'll find that Dixie has also left many great tips around Shawnee there, too. If you're traveling to Shawnee and lucky enough to book a cabin at Rim Rock Dogwood, go for it! You won't regret it!

I have a family who is very involved in sports and other extra curriculum activities at school and this is the best thing we do at fall break. My kids request it over going Chicago, Louisville, or Indianoplis. It is amazing family time. There is only a few spots to get cell service, so we never have to say, "ok put the phones away." We have been going to Rim Rock Cabins for years and just love it. Over the past couple of years they have added wifi to the cabin we stay in, which is a perfect compromise with the kids because unless it is raining, you will not be in the cabin. Please put this mini family vacation on your bucket list. Beautiful trails and rock climbing for all ages. My entire family loves this time together and that is not easy to do considering we have 2 teenagers and 2 elementary aged kids. Deer Run is our favorite cabin.

We stayed for five days at a cabin here. It was so peaceful with privacy. The owners were so warm and welcoming and the cleaning staff were very responsive . There are great state forests to hike with well marked trails. The Garden of the Gods is am amazing place to hike and explore.

The cabins are pet friendly which is a huge plus. I definitely plan to return, hopefully in winter to enjoy the peace and solitude.

If you go in summer be sure to take plenty of bug spray!!
