“Charming inn”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

My husband surprised me for my birthday with a weekend away. Margarita European Inn was a nice change from our usual stays in chain hotels. Very nice staff, charming décor, updated bathrooms, and comfortable accommodations. It's within walking distance to restaurants, stores, and the lake front. We very much enjoyed the breakfast served in the morning also.

We arrived at the hotel not knowing what to expect. We found the parking in the back by happenstance, and honestly, the parking is the only drawback to the hotel. The rooms were on the small side, but we weren't planning a party - we were there to sleep and change clothes. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom updated, and the lobby, library, and parlor were great features.

The front desk staff were friendly and helpful in giving suggestions for wandering in the area. Highly recommend staying at this hotel.

I want to start by saying that all of the staff at the Inn were very friendly and the location is perfect. The Inn itself - well, it could really be nice, but even after the renovations, it still needs work.

Cons:

* There is junk and trash everywhere. If you park in the back of the Inn and walk around to the entrance, you will see all the junk on the back decks of the hotel - old sinks, ladders, etc. If you need to use the elevator from the bottom level, you will encounter all of the trash and old equipment from the former restaurant. On the top floor there is a door leading to the roof - look out that window and you will see more trash and junky old sinks and machine parts. It's weird.

* The rooms have been renovated and the bathrooms, carpeting and paint were all very nice. That said, things like cleaning the filthy windows seemed to be overlooked. And the furniture choices are a little odd - for example, the tv was sitting on a rickety little table facing the sofa. The sofa would be a nice place to watch tv, but there were no side tables or coffee tables to make it really usable space.

* Speaking of the windows - the ones that opened did not have screens, so be careful if you're traveling with little ones.

* Clean up the check-in area - the desk and everything in this room is in disarray. It doesn't make the right impression.

* Security seems lax. Anyone can walk in the front door and most of the time the front desk was not staffed. I think they lock the front door at a certain time, but the actual door handle is broken, so I'm sure it would be easy enough to get in.

* We received our quote for the reservation, but at check-out they tacked on a $5 per night hotel charge. There is no explanation for the charge and an inquiry email to the Inn went unanswered.

Bottom line, this place could be really charming, but it's really rough around the edges. It's strange to me that they would remodel some things, but not do other small things like get rid of the junk and clean the windows. The rates are not inexpensive and that makes it even harder to overlook the glaring issues. Stay at the Hilton Garden Inn and save yourself the disappointment.

On a recent visit to Evanston my wife and I stayed here for three nights; our daughter and granddaughter joined us in a separate room for two of these nights. We were pleased to find that the rooms had been extensively renovated since our previous visit to the hotel ten years ago. The bathroom had been completely updated, functioning perfectly, and the newer bed was extremely comfortable, with quality linens. The new room air conditioning unit and flat screen TV were also appreciated. The size of our room was fine, but some of the rooms are smaller so it is worth reserving one of the larger rooms, if they are available, on the floor with the dining area. Our family enjoyed meeting for breakfast in the sunlit and spacious front room, where we dined on freshly baked pastries as well as cut-up fruit, cereals, hard-boiled eggs, etc. We had a quick chat with the French chef who had just prepared the assortment of pastries for the guest. Our granddaughter had been reading "Fancy Nancy" and enjoyed all of the fancy decorative items in the dining area. The hotel is on a quiet side street where we easily found on-street parking each night, avoiding the parking fee. Apparently all of the problems noted by previous reviewers have now been addressed, including 24 hour staffing of the front desk. The hotel seemed very clean and the staff friendly and helpful. The tiny, antique elevator still remains, but that is part of the charm of the hotel. The only (minor) suggestions for improvement I would offer is to install a light in the closet and supply larger, more luxurious towels. All-in-all it was a very pleasant experience for our family.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the larger rooms on the same floor as the dining area.

We only stayed here one night. Check in was very fast and easy. They have a small parking lot in the back. The room was small but it was only for sleeping. The bathrooms were very nice and looked recently updated. The vintage elevator was pretty neat. It was expensive but worth it for the one night stay.

The service at check in was very friendly and polite, and we enjoyed the décor. It certainly is a cute place, with the library, lobby, antique elevator. But, our room was a let-down. It was small (which we expected), but to the point of being cramped. It was also poorly lit and the rug was unclean. The bed provided the most uncomfortable night sleep I've had in my life (and I'm a backpacker, not picky). The pillows (even the extras in the closet) were so flat that they were useless even piled together and the mattress had areas that were hard as a board and other areas that sagged and gave no support...I am actually shocked that a bed could be that bad!

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

As others have said, this hotel feels European. Only you can decide if you are okay with that. Personally, I don't mind the lack of flat screen TV, I don't mind using the stairs instead of the teeny antique elevator. I don't even mind walking down to the second floor to get ice. However, that also means there is no air conditioning. Not a problem the night I was there as the evening was cool and the ceiling fan helped a lot. However, when I woke up early to get started for a long drive, there was no hot water and no one at the front desk to talk to about it. The service when I checked in was fine, it was just unfortunate that there was no one there first thing in the morning to offer a partial refund on my room cost due to the lack of hot water.

I'm happy to stay in a unique hotel that is more old-world than the local chain. But in my mind, a hotel should provide, at minimum, a decent, clean room and a hot shower. The Margarita only got half of that right. And if it had been a hot night, it would have been very uncomfortable.

Dear Julie,
Thank-you for taking the time to give such helpful feedback. Since your stay with us, The Margarita European Inn has addressed all your concerns. Each room has been properly updated with air-conditioning, we have brand new hot water tanks, flat screen televisions with HD content and the desk is now staffed 24 hours a day. However, we still maintain our original Otis Elevator. We hope you will give us a another opportunity when you visit the area next.
