“What a find!”
Reviewed 28 August 2013

We stayed at The Homestead just last week (Aug 20, 2013) for a couple of nights. It was love at first sight! Our family has been to Chicago many, many times and we have always stayed downtown. This time one of our children was living in Evanston temporarily so we chose to stay there and picked The Homestead after reading reviews. If you, like us, love old buildings and are not just looking for a new, shiny hotel, chose The Homestead. It is a gracious old hotel and we loved the antique feel. Our room was large and well equipped. We chose a small suite to accommodate 3 people, and it was much larger than I thought it would be. It was only slightly more expensive than a standard room too. We had a couch/living area, a dining area and a nice well equipped small kitchen. It even had a small dressing room off the bedroom with tons of hanging space. The staff could not have been nicer. Mary, at the front desk, even answered a phone call from the car when we were coming into town and gave us explicit directions to the hotel. My husband enjoyed having his free breakfast out on their lovely front veranda in the morning. A great hotel, in a charming neighborhood and a pleasant experience in all ways.

With family north of Chicago I've stayed at the Homestead at least ten times, each visit like the last, and all were great. This is among my favorite hotels in the US, but it's not for travelers who want Hiltons, Best Westerns, Marriotts. The Homestead is completely different, much older but not at all threadbare or dreary, basically like a large inn with a staff and ambiance that is at human scale. After struggling through O'Hare and driving north, the Homestead is relaxing immediately upon arrival, and I always look forward to staying there. The place is warm and efficient; the rooms are small---not even close to glamorous, but comfortable and very clean. The TV and A/C work, the bathroom has what one needs, and the breakfast and general feel of the place is a bit like home. The parking garage half a block away invariably honors the Homestead stamp on the ticket. Evanston shopping and amenities are a two block stroll down leafy streets, with Lake Michigan the same distance in the other direction. I can't comment on how this hotel would be with young children, but plenty of teenagers I've seen there don't look distressed or bored. Maybe it calms them down, too.

Room Tip: Suites with a small kitchen are available, if needed.

We just may keep this place a secret! We loved it. The Hotel was built around 1913 or so and has had 4 owners. It was originally built as a hotel and has been so since it was built. So if you don't like staying in historic places, please go somewhere else. This hotel is charming, quite, very comfortable, and a treasure. There are accommodations of various sizes in the hotel so depending on availability and what you want to spend, you can rent what you need. We had a single room with a queen bed which suited our needs perfectly. We had free wireless internet, a great breakfast was included, as was parking. The location is great. It is a block or so away from the lake. Evanston has a great park and beaches along Lake Michigan. We walked the "bike trail" and paths daily. There is also a dog beach there so a great place to exercise your dog. It is also about a block or so from a very vibrant and active "downtown". Bookstores, shops, bars, and more restaurants than you can shake a stick at. The staff at the hotel were great, very friendly, helpful, and informative. The neighborhood is gorgeous! Trains and buses are available about two or so blocks away so you can hop on a train and hit downtown Chicago. It was so nice to have breakfast without some TV blaring! This facility also has long term residents. You can rent by week, month, or more.

So what do you need to know before you stay here? Start by leaving attitudes at home. Being a building that is around 100 years old, the heating system is by radiator, cooling is by window air conditioners. For me it was fine, the room was cool and the noise actually helped me sleep, I need white noise. So if the air conditioner fans bothers you, you will need to come prepared to deal with it. The shower was great. They do have two elevators, one small at the front of the building that accommodates maybe 3 or 4 people with luggage. There is a larger elevator towards the back of the hotel. The parking ramp is about a block away and the hotel validates the ticket. We had no problem coming and going out of the ramp. The Evanston beaches are not free so if you want to spend time on the beach you will need a day pass. The beach opens at 10:30 or so but you can walk the beach before that prior to the attendants and life guards taking their posts. We were on the second floor and the hotel was in the process of painting up wallpapering. The facility was clean and very well kept.

We will be staying there again when in the Chicago area.

Recently i stayed at this hotel, which I may say is the great location in Evanston and that is the only positive thing that I can recall about my experience and stay at this establishment. My wife and I chose this location based on the positive reviews, however when we arrived at this hotel everything started to go downward. I really don't understand the positive reviews about this place in the first place! Our room was dirty in general... The bathroom had the hair in the bathtub and you could clearly tell that maids did not do their job... The management there is awful because they didn't resolve any of our issues. Yes they were nice to talk to but apparently that is all they did, just TALK! Everything in the hotel is very old and rundown as well. Again the location was great because my wife and I were just steps away from everything from restaurants to beach etc. but I would NOT recommend staying here.

Advice to the management: Please follow through on what you promise you will do for your guests and check up on your employees!

There is "traditional" and there is "dated". This property is the later and to the detriment of the customer. The location is great. The hotel lacks investment. Based on the room in which I stayed (I think it was 305), this hotel is not suitable for families with small children. First, the establishment lacks modern fire supression for a high rise hotel. Second, in the room that I stayed, the electric switch for the light was located within the verticle plane of the tub/shower. A child (or adult) could easily reach the switch while standing in the wet bath tub.
Also "dated" was the bed, linen & pillows. The parking was not free as the garage did not accept the hotel's validation and the hotel desk clerk declined to reimburse me. Otherwise, go Wildcats!

This hotel is tucked in a residential area close to the downtown. We enjoyed sitting outside on the veranda both the evening and morning of our one-night stay.
We stayed in a room with two single beds. The room was very clean and attractively furnished; a bit small, but we didn't find this a problem. The small bathroom required a tiny bit of maneuvering as the door could only open about halfway before hitting a radiator behind the door.
We enjoyed a tasty Breakfast -- the expanded continental included cheese, hard-boiled eggs, fruits, cereals, yogurts, and variety of breads/muffins/bagels (and, of course, the usual coffee, etc). Parking was validated for a public lot about 1 1/3 blocks from hotel.
The staff was friendly and efficient, overall. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to going again!
