“Better than a Bach”

On business or a family retreat in Northland; this is the place to stay. Conveniently located, it is a perfect base to explore the delights of the Far North. I've stayed here on numerous occasions and have enjoyed everyone of them. Whether it is the view of the evening sunset from the dining table or the morning calm as I stroll amongst the olive trees, this place connects me to nature. Bruce and Jacqui are great and their knowledge of the area, invaluable.
Best of all, everything is tidy, neat and clean.

Much better location as the starting point to trip around very north of Northland than central part of Kaitaia. Bruce and Jackie were perfect, warm heart and friendly hosts. Especially their cooked meal was so nice. I enjoyed their fresh vegetables, eggs, homemade honey macadamia nuts paste and chilli saurce. Large living room, dining, garden, kitchen and bedroom. They prepare their original trip traveling guide sheet and advised me many good places to visit, it was very simple one piece of paper, but it was much more helprul for me with it and thanks to them, I really enloyed my driving. I would like to recommend this B&B to all people who are going to traveling very north. Though I was a solo traveler, I felt safe there.

Bruce & Jacqui Malcolm were the perfect hosts, treating us practically like family. Great accommodations, outstanding meals, and advice that you cannot obtain except from local people. We had only two days and many things to see on our list, so Jacqui's "travel agent" recommendations were right on. I know we saved a lot of unnecessary driving and were able to time our visits to the highlights to avoid the tour buses that prowl the Cape.
Bruce provided a 4X4 trip out to 90 Mile Beach for us. Of great interest was the wild-horse herds that inhabit the forest adjacent to the beach. Bruce drove around the logging roads until we found one small herd, but the horses were small ran off promptly. A bit more searching until we found another larger herd and a magnificent stallion, who was gloss black, with a white diamond-shaped blaze. My wife dubbed him Fury, and seeing this outstanding creature was the highlight of her day.
This place is not inexpensive, but if you are value-oriented and appreciate all the extras that they provide, this is THE place to stay in the North.

Bruce and Jacqui (and Max) are the BEST hosts! Every detail was covered for our stay. The room was airy and spacious, and the meals were fabulous. Our stay could not have been better. A special highlight was the day trip arranged by Bruce and Jacqui for us with a local Maori couple, Reuben and Beulah, and their beautiful family to their local private beach for a day of 4-wheel drive exploring, surf fishing, and an excursion to the 90 mile beach. They provided wonderful food, information, laughter, more food, and more laughter. We had a wonderful time and learned so much about the Maori lifestyle and culture. This is a MUST DO for anyone who wants a very memorable day! All in all....our stay at Houhora and our day with Reuben and his family were the BEST and we can't wait to go back again!!! - Cheryl and John Everett

Recently stayed at Houhora on a magical trip to Cape Reinga in the Far North of NZ. It is perfectly placed for a base to explore all the wonders of the area, but more importantly the owners are just the sort of people you want running a place like this - helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, well travelled....and, most importantly, good cooks! I merely mentioned that I had enjoyed whitebait fritters on a previous trip to NZ when, hey presto, they were on my breakfast menu...along with a hearty cooked Kiwi breakfast. I understand the owners are retiring soon, so hurry up and visit...!

Room Tip: Only 3 rooms, so you can't go wrong....

We stayed for 3 nights with Bruce & Jacqui, who made us very welcome. A wonderful place to stay when visiting Cape Reinga - Bruce & Jacqui can give you lots of tips of things to do on the drive to & from the Cape. Jacqui took us out for a drive on 90 mile beach - unfortunately we didn't see the wild horses but had a lovely walk on the beach with Max the dog. Bruce also arranged for a friend of his to take us out on a half day fishing trip at short notice. We had a great afternoon with Tank and caught 15 snapper and a blue cod, which were filleted for us. Jacqui cooked some snapper for dinner - delicious!

Breakfasts were very enjoyable and dinners excellent value with produce from the garden. Bruce and Jacqui sent us on our way with fresh eggs from their hens and mandarins and lemons from the garden as well as some of the fish we'd caught. Thanks again for a wonderful stay.
